43 For God made twenty-two works, O lover of good, from the beginning until the seventh day, which are these: on the first day the highest heaven, the earth, the waters, from which are snow, ice, and hail, frost and dew, the spirits ministering before him, which are these: angels of the presence and angels of glory, and angels of clouds and darkness and snows and hail and frost, angels of voices, thunders and lightnings, angels of cold and heat, winter and autumn, and of all the spirits of his creations, those in the heavens and on earth and of the chaos, the darkness over the abyss of the waters that were once upon the earth, from which darkness came evening and night, the light of day and of dawn. 44 These seven greatest signs God made on the first day, but on the second day the firmament in the midst of the waters; on this same day the waters were divided; half of them went up above the firmament, and half of them below the firmament in the midst, upon the face of all the earth; this one work alone God made on the second day.

̓Επιφανίου, ἐπισκόπου Κύπρου, ἐκ τοῦ λόγου τοῦ Περὶ μέτρων καὶ σταθμῶν

43 Εἴκοσι γὰρ καὶ δύο ἔργα, ὦ φιλόκαλε, ὁ Θεὸς ἐποίησεν ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἄχρι τῆς

ἑβδόμης ἡμέρας, ἅτινά ἐστι τάδε· τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸν ἀνώτερον, τὴν γῆν, τὰ ὕδατα, ἐξ ὧν ἐστι χιών, κρύσταλλος καὶ χάλαζα, πάγος καὶ δρόσος, τὰ πνεύματα τὰ λειτουργοῦντα ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ, ἅτινά ἐστι τάδε· ἄγγελοι πρὸ προσώπου καὶ ἄγγελοι τῆς δόξης, καὶ ἄγγελοι νεφελῶν καὶ γνόφων καὶ χιόνων καὶ χαλάζης καὶ πάγου, ἄγγελοι φωνῶν, βροντῶν καὶ ἀστραπῶν, ἄγγελοι ψύχους καὶ καύματος, χειμῶνος καὶ φθινοπώρου, καὶ πάντων τῶν πνευμάτων τῶν κτισμάτων αὐτοῦ, τῶν ἐν οὐρανοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ τοῦ χάους, τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐπάνω τῆς ἀβύσσου τῶν ὑδάτων τῶν ποτὲ ἐπάνω τῆς γῆς, ἐξ οὗπερ σκότους ἑσπέρα καὶ νύξ, τὸ φῶς ἡμέρας τε καὶ ὄρθρου. 44 Ταῦτα τὰ ἑπτὰ μέγιστα σημεῖα ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ, τῇ δὲ δευτέρᾳ ἡμέρᾳ τὸ στερέωμα τὸ ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ὑδάτων· ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐμερίσθη τὰ ὕδατα· τὰ ἡμίση αὐτῶν ἀνέβη ἐπάνω τοῦ στερεώματος, καὶ τὰ ἡμίση αὐτῶν ὑποκάτω τοῦ στερεώματος ἐν μέσῳ, ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς· τοῦτο μόνον τὸ ἔργον ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς τῇ δευτέρᾳ ἡμέρᾳ.
