BOOK ONE

The first book of the Ecclesiastical History contains the following: 1.Pin.1 1 What the subject of the undertaking is. 2 A summary outline concerning the pre-existence and theology of our saviour and lord, the Christ of God. 3 How both the name of Jesus and that of Christ were known from of old and honored by the divine prophets. 4 How the manner of piety proclaimed by him to all the nations was not new or strange. 5 Concerning the times of his appearance among men. How in his time, in accordance with the prophecies, the rulers who had previously led the nation of the Jews by ancestral succession came to an end, and Herod, a foreigner, was the first to rule over them. 7 Concerning the supposed disagreement in the Gospels regarding the genealogy of Christ. 8 Concerning Herod's plot against the children, and the kind of destruction of life that overtook him. 9 Concerning the times of Pilate. 10 Concerning the high priests among the Jews under whom Christ taught. 11 The testimonies concerning John the Baptist and Christ. 12 Concerning the disciples of our saviour. 13 The story concerning the ruler of the Edessenes. 1.1.1 The successions of the holy apostles, together with the times that have elapsed from our Saviour to us; how many and how great are the things said to have been accomplished in ecclesiastical history, and how many illustriously led and presided over it in the most distinguished dioceses, and how many in each generation proclaimed the divine word, either orally or through writings; and who and how many and when, through a desire for innovation, went to the extremity of error, and proclaimed themselves introducers of falsely-named knowledge, mercilessly, like grievous wolves, preying upon the flock of Christ; 1.1.2 in addition to these things, also what immediately befell the whole Jewish nation as a result of their plot against our Saviour; and how many and what kinds of wars, and in what times, the divine word has been warred against by the nations; and how great were those who at various times passed through the contest of blood and tortures for its sake; and in addition to these, the martyrdoms in our own times, and the merciful and benevolent help of our Saviour for all; having chosen to commit these things to writing, I shall begin from no other point than from the first dispensation concerning our saviour and lord Jesus, the Christ of God. 1.1.3 But at this point my account asks for the indulgence of the fair-minded, confessing that it is beyond our own power to promise the undertaking complete and without omission, since we are now the first to enter upon the subject, attempting to travel a sort of desert and untrodden road. We pray to have God as our guide and the power of the Lord as our helper, but we are at any rate unable to find any bare tracks of men who have travelled the same path before us, except only for small indications, through which in different ways they have left us partial accounts of the times through which they have passed, holding up their voices from afar as if they were beacons, and from on high, as from a distant viewpoint and a watch-tower, crying out and directing us where one must walk and how to guide the course of our account without error and without danger. 1.1.4 Therefore, whatever of the things mentioned sporadically by them we consider profitable for the present subject, having gathered them up and as it were from intellectual meadows the
