CAII, QUI CIRCITER INITIA SAECULI TERTII FLORUIT, FRAGMENTA. EX DIALOGO, VEL DISPUTATIONE, CUM PROCLO, SIVE PROCULO, MONTANISTA.
And in the dialogue of Caius, inquit Eusebius lib. iii. Hist. cap. 31. of whom we made mention a little before, cap. 28. ejusd. lib. Proclus, against whom he held the discussion, concerning the death of Philip and his daughters, agreeing with what has been set forth, speaks thus: And after him there were four prophetesses, the daughters of Philip, in Hierapolis in Asia; their tomb is there, and that of their father.
Ex eodem Opere. But I can show the trophies of the apostles. For if you will go to the Vatican or to the Ostian Way, you will find the trophies of those who founded this church.Attulit hoc Eusebius lib. ii. Hist. cap. 25.128Ex eodem Opere. But also Cerinthus, who through revelations allegedly written by a great apostle, falsely introduces to us monstrous tales as having been shown to him by angels, saying that after the resurrection the kingdom of Christ will be on earth; and that again in Jerusalem the flesh, living in society, will serve desires and pleasures. And being an enemy of the Scriptures of God, wishing to deceive, says that a period of a thousand years will be spent in a wedding feast.
Haec posuit Eusebius lib. iii. Hist. cap. 28.De eodem Opere. And there has come to us
inquit Eusebius lib. vi. Hist. cap. 20. also a dialogue of Caius, a most learned man, composed in Rome under Zephyrinus against Proclus, a champion of the Phrygian heresy; in which, silencing the rashness and audacity of his opponents in composing new scriptures, he mentions only thirteen epistles of the holy apostle, not counting the one to the Hebrews with the others. 129QUAE SEQUUNTUR, EX PARVO LABYRINTHO SUMPTA SUNT, QUI VEL CAII, VEL ANONYMI SCRIPTORIS EJUSDEM AEVI EST.For they say Haeretici that all the former ones and the apostles themselves both received and taught these things which they now say; and that the truth of the preaching was preserved until the times of Victor, who was the thirteenth bishop in Rome after Peter; but from his successor Zephyrinus, the truth was corrupted. And what they say might perhaps be plausible, if, first of all, the divine Scriptures did not contradict them; and there are writings of certain brethren older than the times of Victor, which they wrote to the nations for the sake of the truth, and against the heresies of that time; I mean those of Justin and Miltiades and Tatian and Clement and many others, in all of which Christ is spoken of as God. For who is ignorant of the books of Irenaeus and Melito and the rest, which proclaim Christ to be God and man? And how many psalms and odes of the brethren, written from the beginning 130 by the faithful, hymn Christ the Word of God, speaking of him as God. How then, when the mind of the Church has been proclaimed for so many years, is it possible that those up to Victor preached as these men say? And how are they not ashamed to tell these lies against Victor; knowing well that Victor excommunicated Theodotus the tanner, the leader and father of this God-denying apostasy, who was the first to say that Christ was a mere man. For if Victor, according to them, thought as their blasphemy teaches, how could he have cast out Theodotus, the founder of this heresy?
