A. 1.1 A lover's oath: is not punishable. For the gods are not angered by those who break their oaths in matters of love. 1.2 An eagle's old age, a lark's youth: inasmuch as an aging eagle is better than a youthful bird. 1.3 Do not despise a rustic orator: because one should not despise even humble things. 1.4 To be different at different times and to follow the country: because it is fitting for someone to adapt himself to the customs of the cities and places in which he might be; it is said of the octopuses. 1.5 Shake acorns from another oak: they are accustomed to use this of those who refuse to grant a request any longer. 1.6 To lift the armpit: instead of "to feast."
