10.1189 The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. If

but your eye is evil, your whole body will be dark. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! A sound eye is unfeigned love, by which when the body is illuminated, bringing forth through the outer members the same things that are thought within? but the evil eye is feigned love, which is also called hypocrisy; by which the whole body of man is darkened. conceiving within things worthy of darkness; but through the outer members, uttering words that seem to be of light; for they are truly wolves, clothed in sheep's skins; who wash only the outside of the cup and the platter, and not knowing that unless the inside of these is cleansed, neither can the outside become clean. Wherefore clearly rebuking them, the Savior says: If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! That is: if the love that seems to you to be light, is a work worthy of darkness because of the hypocrisy hidden in you, what of your manifest transgressions?

δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρὸς ᾖ, ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου σκοτεινὸν ἔσται. Εἰ δὲ τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ, σκότος ἐστὶ, τὸ σκότος πόσον; Ἀπλοῦς ὀφθαλμὸς, ἡ ἀνυπόκριτός ἐστιν ἀγάπη, δι' ἧς ὅταν τὸ σῶμα φωτίζηται, τὰ αὐτὰ τοῖς ἔσωθεν νοούμενοις, καὶ διὰ τῶν ἔξωθεν μερῶν προφέρουσα; ὁ δὲ πονηρὸς ὀφθαλμός ἐστιν ἡ προσποίητος ἀγάπη, ἥτις καὶ ὑπόκρισις καλεῖται· δι' ἧς ἅπαν τὸ σῶμα σκοτίζεται τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
