And there were different opinions in the circumcision among the sons of Israel, of those against the tribe of Judah and the Christ, these: Essenes; Galileans; Hemerobaptists; Masbothaeans; Samaritans; Sadducees; Pharisees.Haec Eusebius attulit lib. iv. From these heretics, that is, some accuse Symeon the son of Clopas, as being from David and a Christian. and so he suffered martyrdom, being one hundred and twenty years old, under Trajan Caesar and Atticus the consul. and the same writer, 208 Hegesippus, says that his accusers, when those of the royal tribe of the Jews were then being sought, happened to be caught, as being from it themselves.

James, the brother of the Lord, succeeds to the government of the Church in conjunction with the apostles, he who has been called Just by all from the Lord's time even to our own. For many were called James; but this one was holy from his mother's womb. He drank no wine or strong drink, nor did he eat any living thing; a razor never came upon his head; he did not anoint himself with oil, and he did not use the bath. To him alone was it permitted to enter into the holy place. For he did not wear wool, but linen. And he alone entered into the sanctuary; and he was found lying on his knees, and asking forgiveness for the people; so that his knees became hard like a camel's, 209 because he was always bending the knee in worship to God, and asking forgiveness for the people. On account of his exceeding righteousness, he was called the Just and Oblias; which is in Greek, bulwark of the people and righteousness, as the prophets declare concerning him. Some therefore of the seven sects among the people, which were described by me before in the memoirs, asked him, what is the door of Jesus; and he said that this one was the Savior. From which some believed that Jesus is the Christ. But the aforesaid heresies did not believe either in a resurrection, or in one coming to give to every man according to his works. But as many as did believe, did so on account of James. Since, therefore, many even of the rulers believed, there was a commotion among the Jews and Scribes and Pharisees, saying that the whole people was in danger of looking for Jesus as the Christ. They came together, therefore, and said to James: We beseech you; restrain the people, for they have gone astray after Jesus, as if he were the 210 Christ. We beseech you to persuade all who have come for the day of the Passover concerning Jesus. For we all obey you. For we and all the people bear witness to you that you are just, and that you do not accept any person. Persuade, therefore, the multitude not to be led astray concerning Jesus. For all the people and all of us obey you. Stand, therefore, upon the pinnacle of the temple, that from that high position you may be conspicuous, and your words may be easily heard by all the people. For on account of the Passover all the tribes have come together with the Gentiles also. The aforesaid Scribes and Pharisees therefore placed James upon the pinnacle of the temple, and cried out to him and said: O Just One, whom we all ought to obey, since the people are led astray after Jesus who was crucified, tell us what is the door of Jesus. And he answered with a loud voice: Why do you ask me concerning Jesus the

∆ιαδέχεται δὲ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν μετὰ τῶν ἀποστόλων, ὁ ἀδελφὸς τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰάκωβος, ὁ ὀνομασθεὶς ὑπὸ πάντων δίκαιος ἀπὸ τῶν τοῦ Κυρίου χρόνων μέχρι καὶ ἡμῶν. ἐπεὶ πολλοὶ Ἰάκωβοι ἐκαλοῦντο· οὗτος δὲ ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτοῦ ἅγιος ἦν.
