GENUINE EPISTLES

TO THE EPHESIANS IGNATIUS

Ignatius, who is also Theophorus, to the church which is blessed in the greatness of God the Father with fullness, which was predestined before the ages to be for abiding glory always, unchangeable, united and chosen in a true passion, by the will of the Father and of Jesus Christ, our God, to the church most worthy of blessing, which is in Ephesus of Asia, abundant greetings in Jesus Christ and in blameless joy. Having received in God your much-beloved name, which you possess by a just nature according to faith and love in Christ Jesus, our Savior; being “imitators of God,” having rekindled in the blood of God the kindred work, you have perfectly completed it; for when you heard that I was bound from Syria for the sake of the common Name and hope, and hoping through your prayer to succeed in fighting with beasts in Rome, so that by succeeding I might be able to be a disciple, you hastened to see me; since, therefore, I have received your whole multitude in the name of God in Onesimus, who is in inexpressible love, and your bishop in the flesh, whom I pray that you love according to Jesus Christ, and that you all be in his likeness. For blessed is He who granted to you, being worthy, to possess such a bishop. And concerning my fellow servant Burrhus, your deacon according to God, blessed in all things, I pray that he remain for the honor of you and of the bishop. And Crocus, too, worthy of God and of you, whom I received as an example of the love from you, has refreshed me in every way; may the Father of Jesus Christ also refresh him, together with Onesimus and Burrhus and Euplus and Fronto, through whom I have seen you all according to love.

May I have joy of you always, if I be worthy. It is therefore fitting to glorify in every way Jesus Christ who has glorified you, that, being perfected in one submission, submitting to the bishop and to the presbytery, you may be sanctified in all things. I do not command you as though I were someone. For even though I am bound in the Name, I am not yet perfected in Jesus Christ. For now I am beginning to be a disciple, and I speak to you as my fellow teachers. For it was needful for me to be anointed by you with faith, admonition, endurance, long-suffering. But since love does not permit me to be silent concerning you, for this reason I have taken it upon myself to exhort you, that you may run in harmony with the mind of God. For Jesus Christ, our inseparable life, is the mind of the Father, just as the bishops, appointed to the ends of the earth, are in the mind of Jesus Christ. Therefore it is fitting for you to run in harmony with the mind of the bishop, which also you do. For your worthily-named presbytery, worthy of God, is so attuned to the bishop, as strings to a lyre. Therefore in your concord and harmonious love Jesus Christ is sung. And you, man by man, become a choir, that being harmonious in concord, taking up the key of God in unity, you may sing with one voice through Jesus Christ to the Father, that he may both hear you and recognize through your good works that you are members of his Son. It is therefore profitable for you to be in blameless unity, that you may also always partake of God. For if I in a short time have had such fellowship with your bishop, which was not human but spiritual, how much more do I count you blessed who are mingled with him as the church is with Jesus Christ, and as Jesus Christ is with the Father, that all things may be harmonious in unity? Let no one be deceived; if anyone is not within the altar, he is deprived of “the bread of God.” For if the prayer of one or two has such power, how much more that of the bishop and of the whole church? He therefore who does not come to the

ΠΡOΣ EΦEΣIOΥΣ IΓNATIOΣ
