In Petrum et Paulum
On the chief of the apostles Peter and Paul, and their most glorious martyrdom.
59.491
1. I see a contest of heaven and earth because of the present festival of the memory of the apostles, the heavenly powers on the one hand praising with honored voices the teaching of their labor, as through them was made known to them the mystery of the economy, as Paul cries out, "That now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God;" and people on earth on the other hand striving to show worthy praise through honor towards the chief apostles, as having returned to salvation through them. For what is greater than Peter? What is equal to Paul? who by word and deed have conquered all creation in heaven and on earth; they who were entwined with the clay of the body, and were found to be better than angels. What then shall we say to the teachers of the creation above and the creation below? For I find no word worthy to praise those who praised our race, those who traversed the whole earth and sea, and pulled up the roots of sins, and cast the seeds of piety into the hearts of disobedient people.
Peter the leader of the apo 59.492 stles, Paul the familiar of the world, and partaker with the powers above; Peter the bridle of the ungrateful Jews, Paul the comfort of the Gentiles. And behold for me the surpassing wisdom of the Lord. For He chose Peter from among fishermen, and Paul from among tent-makers; and He did this for a benefit; for the glory of the Jews was sinking. For this reason the Lord entrusted this fisherman, saying to him: Go to the sea, and cast a hook; and take the first fish that comes up, open its mouth, and you will find a stater. By "sea" he means the unstable mind of the lawless Jews; by "hook", the skillful word of teaching; "fish" signifies the law. And to open its mouth means to interpret it; and to find a stater in it signifies to examine it spiritually. And to Paul as a tent-maker He handed over the Gentiles, that he might clothe the naked through law and grace, with the crimson garment, dyed from the Master's water and blood. Thus the Master cries to him, saying, Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles. O blessed pair, entrusted with the souls of the whole world! Peter, the beginning of orthodoxy, the 59.493 great hierophant of the Church, the necessary counselor of Christians, the treasure of the powers above, the apostle honored by the Master. Paul, the great herald of truth, the boast of the world, the man in heaven, and the angel on earth, the glory of the Church, the eagle flying on high, the lyre of the Spirit, the swallow and the cicada, the Master's instrument, the vigilant servant of Christ. Paul and Peter, the yoked oxen of the Church, who traded a good business for the world, who took up the cross instead of a yoke, and instead of a rider, the Savior, and instead of reins, the testaments of the Scriptures, and instead of a goad, the grace of the Holy Spirit. Paul and Peter, who brighten the Church daily, the Master's storehouses, the inns of the world, the vessels of the Spirit, the interpreters of the Holy Trinity, the expounders of the economy of the divine word. Peter, my spiritual love; Paul, the chosen vessel, my staff. Peter, the temple
