De unione
On union, by Damascene. Union is a common coming together of separate things. And it occurs in 12 ways: by mixture, by accumulation, by kneading, by intermingling, by fusion, by fitting together, by juxtaposition, by coalescence, by substance, by relation, by composition, and only by hypostasis. And it is by mixture, as in the case of liquids; of wine and water. By accumulation, as in the case of dry things; of wheat and barley. By kneading, as in the case of a dry and a wet thing; of earth and water. By intermingling, as in the case of different flours. By fusion, as in the case of molten things; of gold and silver, of wax and pitch. By fitting together, as in the case of stones. By juxtaposition, as in the case of planks. By coalescence, as in the case of a torch coming from a fire and being united again. By substance, as in the case of individuals, of Peter and Paul, or of certain horses, or oxen, or other animals. By relation, as in the case of friends and opinions coming together into one will. By composition, as in the case of soul and body. But by hypostasis is spoken of only in the case of the divinity and humanity in Christ. For the two natures possessed one person, and not two, according to the nonsense of Nestorius. And such a union is also called essential, and true, and not according to appearance. And otherwise, a hypostatic union is the coming together of different substances into one hypostasis, with the natural property of each being preserved after the union.

Περὶ ἑνώσεως, τοῦ ∆αμασκηνοῦ. Ἕνωσίς ἐστι διεστώτων πραγμάτων κοινωνικὴ συνδρομή. Ἓν γὰρ πρόσωπον ἔσχον αἱ δύο φύσεις, καὶ οὐ δύο, κατὰ τὸν λῆρον Νεστόριον. Λέγεται δὲ καὶ οὐσιώδης ἡ τοιαύτη ἕνωσις, καὶ ἀληθὴς, καὶ οὐ κατὰ φαντασίαν. Καὶ ἄλλως δὲ, καθ' ὑπόστασιν ἕνωσίς ἐστιν ἡ τῶν ἑτεροουσίων εἰς μίαν ὑπόστασιν σύνοδος, σωζομένης ἑκάστῳ μετὰ τὴν ἕνωσιν τῆς φυσικῆς ἰδιότητος.
