Of the Areopagite: That the saints of old, while they were still Greeks, had distinguishing marks, and after turning to Christ, they unashamedly inscribed them on themselves; for behold, he named himself Areopagite, as did the divine Justin in his address To the Greeks, of Justin the Philosopher.

To the fellow presbyter: That the name of presbyter also denotes the bishop, and the bishop also the presbyter; and this is shown in the Acts of the holy apostles, where Paul addresses the churches of Asia.

§ 1. Theological Outlines: Note that another treatise has been composed by the father, as a kind of

introduction and elementary pre-consideration of the things said sporadically in the Scriptures about God; or it was a recollection, following which the present treatise has been composed by him.

ὄντες οἱ πάλαι ἅγιοι, καί μετά τό ἐπιστρέψαι πρός Χριστόν ἀνερυθριάστως ἐπέγραφον ἑαυτοῖς· ἰδού γάρ Ἀρεοπαγίτην ἐπωνόμασεν ἑαυτόν, ὡς καί ὁ θεῖος Ἰουστῖνος ἐν τῷ Πρός Ἕλληνας λόγῳ, Ἰουστίνου Φιλοσόφου.

Συμπρεσβυτέρῳ: Ὅτι τό τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου ὄνομα καί τόν ἐπίσκοπον δηλοῖ, ἐπίσκοπος δέ καί ὁ πρεσβύτερος· καί τοῦτο δηλοῦται ἐν ταῖς Πράξεσι τῶν ἁγίων ἀποστόλων, ἔνθα ἐν Ἀσίᾳ συντάσσεται ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις αὐτῆς ὁ Παῦλος.

§ 1. Θεολογικάς: Σημείωσαι, ὅτι ἑτέρα πραγματεία πεπόνηται τῷ πατρί οἱονεί

προεισαγωγή τις καί προθεωρία στοιχειώδης τῶν περί Θεοῦ ἐν ταῖς Γραφαῖς σποράδην εἰρημένων· ἤτοι ἐπίμνησις ἦν ἥστινος κατά ἀκολουθίαν ἡ παροῦσα αὐτῷ πεπραγμάτευται.

Οὐκ ἐν πειθοῖς: Ἡ ἀνθρωπίνη σοφία ἐκ τῶν αἰσθητῶν τάς πιθανότητας τῶν ἀποδείξεων ἐρανίζεται· ἡ γάρ μεγάλη τῶν συλλογισμῶν ἀνάγκη τῆς γεωμετρίας τάς ἀφορμάς παραλαμβάνει, ἐπί δέ τῶν ἀσωμάτων, μᾶλλον δέ καί ὑπερασωμάτων καί 14S_016 ὑπέρ πᾶσαν οὐσίαν, πῶς ἄν τις λογικῶς ἐπιστήσειεν ἀνερμηνεύτως, εἰ
