CHRONICLE OF THE LORD MICHAEL GLYCAS

I am writing this short letter to you, my dearest child. For even if those who collected the chronological narratives have given themselves over to countless labors so as to ambitiously set forth their own compositions, yet I, having included such things in a few words 4 (for I know that it very much weighs down the ears, if the account were to be extended at length), behold, I am composing for you this brief book. Therefore, before all things it is worthy for you to know that in six days God made this world, and on the seventh He rested from all His works which He had made. He was able, therefore, to produce all things in one day, that is, heaven, earth and sea, fish, birds and quadrupeds, and in addition to these, man. But so that those who say all things were produced by chance might not seize an opportunity, our Creator and God needed six days for the production of this world, as the golden-tongued John says. For if even with the works being completed in this way some imagined these things to be spontaneous, how much more if they had been brought into being all at once and at the same time. And in six days only, and 5 no more or less, He was pleased for this world to be produced, so that we too might be taught from this to work for six days of the week, and to use the seventh for the sole praise of God. For on account of this the Creator also rested on the seventh day from all the works which He began to make. But if the Lord is found in the Gospels saying, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working,' do not be amazed. For then God, as he of the golden tongue says, rested from all the works, that is, He stopped creating; for after the sixth day He brought nothing from non-being into being. But since He did not cease holding together and preserving the created things ever since (for if He were not doing so, such things would not have endured for so many ages), He is also said, very reasonably, to be working even today. And on the first day He made the heaven and the earth, that first heaven, both very beautiful and without stars, about which also the evangelist John, in his Revelation, discoursing about the state of things after these events, says thus: 'I saw a new heaven and a new earth, and the sea is no more.' In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth. Pay attention, beloved, that this too has been questioned here, how He made the heaven first, then the earth. 6 For since the foundations are laid first, and then the roof, it was entirely necessary for the earth to be produced and then the heaven. But do not be amazed on account of this. For since all things of God are above nature and the sequence of art, it is in no way strange if indeed in the production of this world He made the heaven first, then the earth. And so says the most divine John; but others say that God the master craftsman, by producing the heaven first, then the earth, showed His ineffable wisdom and art. For since, as Gregory of Nyssa, wise in divine things, says that through the swift motion of the celestial body the earth is settled in its place and is held tightly together, it was entirely fitting for that which holds together to be produced first, then that which is held together. But if someone should raise a further question here, saying, how did the earth not move from its own foundation when the heaven became motionless, as Maximus the Great [mentions] in his [work] to Thalassius, when Joshua son of Nun said, 'Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon,' then we will say to him that where 1
