Fragmentum ex homiliis in Acta apostolorum
FROM ORIGEN'S [HOMILIES] ON THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES. From the fourth homily on the Acts. 14.829 It was necessary for the Scripture to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth of David concerning Judas; 14.832 in which psalm the things concerning Judas are written. Someone might say that it is not the Holy Spirit who speaks; for clearly they are the words of the Savior saying: O God, do not be silent about my praise; because the mouth of the sinner, and the mouth of the deceitful, has been opened against me; and the following until: And let another take his office. How then, if it is the Savior who says these things, does Peter say: It was necessary for the Scripture to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth of David? Perhaps, then, what we are taught here is something like this. The Holy Spirit personifies in the prophets; and if it personifies God, it is not God who is speaking, but the Holy Spirit speaks in the person of God; and if it personifies Christ, it is not Christ who is speaking, but the Holy Spirit speaks in the person of Christ. Thus, whether it personifies the prophet, or that people, or this people, or whatever it personifies, it is the Holy Spirit that personifies all things.
