De paschate ad Tricentium

OF THE SAME, FROM THE 15TH SERMON ON PASCHA

Concerning the fast of Wednesday and Friday.

No one will accuse us for observing Wednesday and Friday, on which it has been reasonably commanded us to fast according to tradition; Wednesday, because of the council held by the Jews for the betrayal of the Lord; and Friday, because he suffered for our sakes. For the Lord's day we celebrate as a day of joy because of the one who rose on it, on which we have received the tradition not even to bend the knees.

De paschate ad Tricentium

ΤΟΥ ΑΥΤΟΥ ΕΚ ΤΟΥ ΛΟΓΟΥ ΕΙΣ ΤΟ ΠΑΣΧΑ ΙΕ

Περὶ νηστείας τετράδος καὶ παρασκευῆς.

Οὐκ ἐγκαλέσει τις ἡμῖν παρατηρουμένοις τετράδα καὶ παρασκευήν, ἐν αἷς καὶ νηστεύειν ἡμῖν κατὰ παράδοσιν εὐλόγως προστέτακτο· τὴν μὲν τετράδα, διὰ τὸ γενόμενον συμβούλιον ὑπὸ Ἰουδαίων ἐπὶ τῇ προ58 δοσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου· τὴν δὲ παρασκευήν, διὰ τὸ πεπονθέναι αὐτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν. Τὴν γὰρ κυριακὴν χαρμοσύνης ἡμέραν ἄγομεν διὰ τὸν ἀναστάντα ἐν αὐτῇ, ἐν ᾗ οὐδὲ γόνατα κλίνειν παρειλήφαμεν.
