PENANCES FOR THE CANONESSES.

1. She who has sworn any oath whatsoever, let her be separated for two weeks. 2. She who has spoken ill of one of the elder women entrusted with regulating the affairs in the monastery, let her be separated for one week. 3. She who secretly says something against an absent sister with the purpose of slandering her, let her be separated for one week. 4. She who has insulted someone with any insult whatsoever, let her be separated for one week. 5. Whoever is found whispering, other than the elder women entrusted to serve, let her be separated for one week 31.1316 6. Whoever, without necessary cause, initiates untimely conversation and engages in idle talk, let her be separated for one week. 7. Whoever utters jests, or unseemly laughter, let her be separated for one week. 8. Whoever, while engaged in the work of service, and having a necessary need, shall speak to her neighbor either with shouting or insolent speech, let her be separated for one week. 9. Whoever defends one who is being condemned for a fault by those who have been entrusted after examination to manage and regulate, let her be separated along with the one whom she defends for two weeks. 10. Whoever shall speak to any of those entering from the outside, before it is permitted by her who is entrusted with the care and with full authority for good order, let her be separated for one week. 11. Whoever should be found grumbling in the want of things for her need, or in the toil of her works, let her be separated for one week. 12. She who opposes the command of those entrusted with the care, let her be separated for one week. 13. She who contemptuously, with feigned quietness, does not fulfill the command, let her be separated for one week. 14. She who wishes to adorn herself, after a first and second admonition, is to be reproved in the presence of the superior. 15. She who has gone away to her mother or to her sister without the permission of those entrusted with the care, let her be separated for one week. 16. She who has made a sign with her eyes in a wicked manner, grieving her neighbor, let her be separated for one week. 17. She who speaks to any of the women from outside after the dismissal of the assemblies, let her be separated for two weeks. 18. She who moves from one work to another work without the command of those who have the care, let her be separated for one week. 19. Whoever should cast off the penance (sic), or contradicts, or grumbles, not recognizing her own benefit in the correction, let her be separated for two weeks.

ΕΠΙΤΙΜΙΑ ΕΙΣ ΤΑΣ ΚΑΝΟΝΙΚΑΣ.

αʹ Ἡ ὀμόσασα τὸν τυχόντα ὅρκον ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδο μάδας δύο. βʹ Ἡ βλασφημήσασά τινα τῶν πρεσβυτίδων τῶν πεπιστευμένων διατυποῦν τὰ ἐν τῷ ἀσκητηρίῳ ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. γʹ Ἡ κατὰ ἀπούσης ἀδελφῆς κρυφῆ λέγουσά τι σκο πῷ τοῦ διαβάλλειν αὐτὴν, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. δʹ Ἡ ὑβρίσασά τινα ὕβριν τὴν τυχοῦσαν ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. εʹ Ἥτις εὑρίσκεται ψιθυρίζουσα ἄλλη ἐκτὸς τῶν πρεσβυτίδων τῶν πεπιστευμένων διακονεῖν, ἀφορι ζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν 31.1316 ϛʹ Ἥτις χωρὶς ἀναγκαίας χρείας ἄκαιρον ὁμιλίαν προβαλλομένη ἀργολογεῖ, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ζʹ Ἥτις εὐτράπελα φθέγγεται, ἢ γέλωτα ἀπρεπῆ, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ηʹ Ἥτις ἐν τῷ ἔργῳ τῆς διακονίας οὖσα, καὶ ἀναγ καίαν χρείαν ἔχουσα, ὁμιλήσει τῇ πλησίον ἢ μετὰ κραυγῆς ἢ θρασυλογίας, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. θʹ Ἥτις ἀντέχεται τῆς ἐπικαταγινωσκομένης ἐπὶ πταίσματι παρὰ τῶν μετὰ δοκιμασίας οἰκο νομεῖν καὶ διατυποῦν πεπιστευμένων, συναφορι ζέσθω ἐκείνῃ ᾗ ἀντέχεται ἑβδομάδας δύο. ιʹ Ἥτις τινὶ τῶν ἔξωθεν ἐπεισερχομένων ὁμιλήσει, πρὶν ἐπιτραπῇ παρὰ τῆς τὴν φροντίδα ἐμπεπι στευμένης ἐν πάσῃ ἐξουσίᾳ εὐταξίας, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ιαʹ Ἥτις εὑρίσκοιτο γογγύζουσα ἐν τῇ στενοχωρίᾳ τῶν πρὸς τὴν χρείαν, ἢ ἐν τῷ καμάτῳ τῶν ἔργων, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ιβʹ Ἡ ἀντιπίπτουσα τῷ προστάγματι τῶν πεπι στευμένων τὴν φροντίδα ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ιγʹ Ἡ καταφρονητικῶς, μετὰ δῆθεν ἡσυχίας μὴ πλη ροῦσα τὸ ἐπίταγμα ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ιδʹ Ἡ θέλουσα καλλωπίζεσθαι, μετὰ μίαν καὶ δευτέ ραν νουθεσίαν, ἐπὶ τοῦ προεστῶτος ἐλεγχέσθαι. ιεʹ Ἡ ἄνευ γνώμης τῶν πεπιστευμένων τὴν φροντίδα εἰς μητέρα ἢ εἰς ἀδελφὴν ἀπελθοῦσα, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ι ϛʹ Ἡ ἐννεύσασα ὀφθαλμοὺς σχήματι πονηρῷ λυποῦσα τῇ πλησίον, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ιζʹ Ἡ μετὰ τὴν ἀπόλυσιν τῶν συνάξεων ὁμιλοῦσά τινι τῶν ἔξω γυναικῶν ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδας δύο. ιηʹ Ἡ ἀπ' ἔργου εἰς ἕτερον ἔργον μεταβαίνουσα χωρὶς ἐπιταγῆς τῶν ἐχόντων τὴν φροντίδα ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδα μίαν. ιθʹ Ἥτις τὸ ἐπιτίμιον ἀποβάλλοιεν (sic), ἢ ἀντιλέγει, ἢ γογγύζει, μὴ γνωρίζουσα τὸ ἑαυτῆς ὄφελος ἐν τῇ διορθώσει, ἀφοριζέσθω ἑβδομάδας δύο.
