his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his beast of burden, nor anything that is your neighbor's,” because all desire for these things is from the evil one. For he who has desired his neighbor's wife, or male servant, or female servant, is already in his mind an adulterer and a thief, unless he repents, and he has been judged by our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom be glory to God for ever and ever; amen. For He says in the Gospel, summing up and establishing and fulfilling the decalogue of the Law: “That it is written in the Law, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ but I say to you,” that is, in the Law given through Moses I spoke, but now I Myself say to you: “Everyone who looks at his neighbor’s wife to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Thus he who has desired is judged an adulterer in thought. But he who desires an ox or a donkey, does he not intend to steal and appropriate or even lead them away? Or again, he who has desired a field and persists in such a disposition acts wickedly, so that by moving the boundary-stones he might compel the owner to sell it to him for nothing; for somewhere the prophet says: “Woe to those who join house to house and bring field near to field, that they may take something from their neighbor.” Wherefore he says: “Will you dwell alone upon the earth? For these things have been heard in the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.” And elsewhere: “Cursed is he who removes the boundaries of his fathers, and all the people shall say: So be it, so be it.” Therefore Moses says: “You shall not move the boundaries of your neighbor, which your fathers have set.” For these reasons, therefore, fears, deaths, courts, and condemnations from God follow such people. But for men obedient to God, this one simple, true, living law of God exists within: “What you hate to be done to you by another, you shall not do to another.” You do not wish anyone to look upon your wife evilly for her corruption; neither should you gaze maliciously upon your neighbor's wife. You do not wish your cloak to be taken; neither should you take another's. You do not want to be struck, reviled, or insulted; neither should you do these things to another. But does someone curse you? You bless him, because it is written in the book of Numbers: “He who blesses you is blessed, and he who curses you is cursed.” Likewise it is also written in the Gospel: “Bless those

αὐτοῦ οὐδὲ τὸν παῖδα αὐτοῦ οὔτε τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτοῦ οὔτε τοῦ βοὸς αὐτοῦ οὔτε τοῦ ὑποζυγίου αὐτοῦ οὔτε ὅσα τοῦ πλησίον σου ἐστίν», ὅτι ἡ πᾶσα τούτων ἐπιθυμία ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ὑπάρχει. Ὁ γὰρ ἐπιθυμήσας τὴν γυναῖκα ἢ τὸν παῖδα ἢ τὴν παιδίσκην τοῦ πλησίον ἤδη κατὰ διάνοιαν μοιχὸς καὶ κλέπτης ἐστίν, ἐὰν μὴ μεταγνῷ, καὶ κέκριται ὑπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, δι' οὗ ἡ δόξα τῷ Θεῷ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας· ἀμήν. Λέγει γὰρ ἐν τῷ Eὐαγγελίῳ, ἀνακεφα λαιούμενος καὶ στηρίζων καὶ πληρῶν τὴν δεκάλογον τοῦ Νόμου· «Ὅτι ἐν τῷ Νόμῳ γέγραπται· Oὐ μοιχεύσεις· ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν», τοῦτ' ἔστιν ἐν τῷ Νόμῳ τῷ διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐγὼ ἐλάλησα, νῦν δὲ ὁ αὐτὸς ὑμῖν λέγω· «Πᾶς, ὅστις ἐμβλέψει εἰς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ πλησίον πρὸς τὸ ἐπι θυμῆσαι αὐτήν, ἤδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ.» Oὕτως ἐκρίθη μοιχὸς κατ' ἔννοιαν ὁ ἐπιθυμήσας. Ὁ δὲ τὸν βοῦν ἢ τὸν ὄνον ἐπιθυμήσας οὐκ ἐπὶ τῷ κλέψαι καὶ ἰδιοποιήσασθαι ἢ καὶ ἀπαγαγεῖν αὐτὰ δια νοεῖται; Ἢ ὁ τὸν ἀγρὸν πάλιν ἐπιθυμήσας καὶ ἐπιμείνας τῇ τοιᾷδε διαθέσει· πονηρεύεται, ὅπως ὁρογλυφήσας ἀναγκάσῃ τὸν ἔχοντα τοῦ μηδενὸς ἀποδόσθαι αὐτῷ· φησὶν γάρ που ὁ προφήτης· «Oὐαὶ οἱ συνάπτοντες οἰκίαν πρὸς οἰκίαν καὶ ἀγρὸν πρὸς ἀγρὸν ἐγγίζοντες, ἵνα τοῦ πλησίον ἀφέλωνταί τι.» ∆ιὸ λέγει· «Μὴ οἰκήσετε μόνοι ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς; Ἠκούσθη γὰρ εἰς τὰ ὦτα Κυρίου Σαβαὼθ ταῦτα.» Καὶ ἀλλαχοῦ· «Ἐπικατάρατος ὁ μετατιθεὶς ὅρια πατέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐρεῖ πᾶς ὁ λαός· Γένοιτο, γένοιτο.» ∆ιό φησιν ὁ Μωϋσῆς· «Oὐ μετακινήσεις ὅρια τοῦ πλησίον σου, ἃ ἔθεντο οἱ πατέρες σου.» ∆ιὰ ταῦτα οὖν φόβοι, θάνατοι, δικαστήρια, καταδίκαι παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῖς τοιούτοις ἐπακολουθοῦσι. Τοῖς δὲ ὑπηκόοις Θεῷ ἀνθρώποις εἷς νόμος Θεοῦ ἁπλοῦς, ἀληθής, ζῶν οὗτος ἐνυπάρχει· «Ὃ σὺ μισεῖς ὑφ' ἑτέρου σοὶ γενέσθαι, σὺ ἄλλῳ οὐ ποιήσεις.» Oὐ βούλει τῇ γυναικί σού τινα ἐμβλέψαι κακῶς εἰς διαφθορὰν αὐτῆς· μηδὲ σὺ τῇ τοῦ πλησίον σου γυναικὶ κακοήθως ἀτενίσῃς. Oὐ βούλει σου τὸ ἱμάτιον ἀρθῆναι· μηδὲ σὺ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου ἄρῃς. Oὐ θέλεις πληγῆναι, λοιδορηθῆναι, ὑβρισθῆναι· μηδὲ σὺ ἄλλῳ ταῦτα διαθῇς. Ἀλλὰ καταρᾶταί σέ τις; Σὺ εὐλόγησον αὐτόν, ὅτι γέγραπται ἐν τῇ βίβλῳ τῶν Ἀριθμῶν· «Ὁ εὐλογῶν σε εὐλόγηται, καὶ ὁ καταρώμενός σε κεκατήραται.» Ὁμοίως καὶ ἐν τῷ Eὐαγγελίῳ γέγραπται· «Eὐλογεῖτε τοὺς
