to women (see the first passage) someone will say: I have fornicated and I have committed adultery, and I have defiled my body with all kinds of licentiousness, I have become useless ... to Rahab the harlot, and not a harlot in her disposition, and take courage you also for your own salvation. For if she who fornicated openly and publicly, before grace is saved through repentance, is she who once fornicated, after grace, not saved through repentance and fasting? For how was Rahab saved, listen: she believed ... of women likewise she who is brought forward through repentance. 10 And even if whole ... he did not deny them ... again as was customary ... he became our savior ... Then Moses, asking on behalf of the high priest, importunes God, and a son ... and has he forbidden you, having come out of the perverse way, to come to salvation? Repent, brother, you also ... to speak worthily of his love... of men together ... let us speak of this love of ours. 11 Come also to David; see the blessed one how he armed himself with fastings and psalm-singing, take ... he did not die with his sin; for this is the thing to be striven for, not to die with the sin. He came ... the physician of the wound ... that you have sinned ... but not David the king, who was clothed in purple; for he was considering the angelic host of the Lord, and the invisible one as if seeing him; to the prophet who came, or rather through him ... a true confession ... he had already been convicted by someone, lest many know the matter, for it was done quickly. The prophet was immediately present, and that was a reproof ... a healing of the threat. For Nathan who reproved him, immediately added: "And the Lord," he says, "has taken away your sin ... your enemies; for you had many enemies on account of your righteousness, but your self-control guarded you; but having betrayed the greatest weapon, you have the enemies standing ready, risen up against you; So the prophet thus comforted him [cf. I. loc.]. 12 But the blessed David, even though he especially heard that he had put it aside ... not only sat on ashes, but also had ashes as his food, just as ... the desirable eyes; for I will wash, he says, every night my bed, with my tears my couch [I will drench]. The rulers urging him. ... If therefore the king thus confessed ... all but calling upon the help of him who would ascend to the heavens from there [and] the redeemer, and cursing bitterly ... for he knew that he ... to him who forgives, it will be forgiven. 13 You see that it is good ... that for those who repent there is ... of piety, worthy of all punishment, liable for the sin, a desirer of others' works, having made himself liable for others' possessions, but when ... through Jezebel he killed ... his garments, he sprinkled his head with dust, he walled himself in with the purest fasting and what did the loving God say to Elijah? ... but in the present time of repentance granting forgiveness to one another. For it is just to respond suitably to ... 14 Jeroboam the servant and apostate ... sacrificing to idols upon an altar, and by the judgment of God withered ... the one reproving him ... but on it ... God healed him through the prophet ... having healed from sins to set free ... having sawn, and having been defiled in all kinds of idolatries, and having filled Jerusalem with innocent blood ... the Lord of his supplication and his prayer, and ... if he who ... and killed ... you who have done nothing of the sort, if you repent, are you not saved? see that you do not disbelieve in vain in the power of repentance. 15 Do you wish to know how powerful repentance is? do you want to learn that ... it turned away; for this is truly great; but still small compared to what is about to be said ... a divine sentence brought forth against king Hezekiah himself, it loosed ... to him who was about to die ... what hope of salvation? for when he heard the mystery of death [thus the codex, clearly alone here], the members of his body were dissolved, his nerves were cut, his strength failed on account of the word of the prophet to him; for he received the sentence as from God, but he did not desist ... and having stretched out ... from the bed towards the ... with tears of repentance he drenched the bed (for the thickness of walls does not hinder prayers sent up with reverence, sym editione 1).
