to discover the nature or origin of God. Do not be over-curious about the Trinity, but only believe, and worship; for he who is over-curious does not believe.
Acquire wisdom and not silver, make a shining garment of Christ our Lord, beyond any robe of fine linen, because possessions will not profit on the day of death. Just as fire consumes a forest, so every sinner will be consumed by the eternal fire, and cannot die; for he will be tormented immortally. It is no great thing, if we become righteous, for what we were created by God at first, very good, this we shall become. 79.1240 He who lives contrary to nature does not keep the commandments of God. All wisdom is to fear the Lord, and all instruction that does not teach the law of the Lord is foolishness and folly. Faith and baptism will not deliver from the eternal fire, without works of righteousness.
For if you have enlisted with Christ, keep his commandments, and if you believe in the things to come, lay claim to the eternal glory, and fear the flaming sword; but if you do not fulfill the commands of God, do not call yourself a believer. All creation obeys the command of God, but man alone disobeys, for whom all things were made. We will offer nothing to God if we keep ourselves pure, but we will procure life for ourselves, and the ineffable enjoyment of eternal good things. Do not say, "I cannot keep the commandment of God because of father, or because of mother, or because of wife, or because of children, or because of anyone else," for they will not deliver you from the impending wrath, and from the undying worm. But let everyone who opposes you in the attainment of God, and of virtues, be abominable and hateful to you, it is not good even to eat with such a person.
