I make these lovers of truth. Moreover, not having received these things by hearing from the ancients, nor paying attention to rumors and myths which have nothing sound in them, from which it has happened that many writers have been led astray from the truth, but being myself present at all things and, if anyone, knowing the truth about all things as much as is possible, so indeed I will make the narrative about them, placing truth foremost and preferring it to every other cause. If indeed you are a lover of truth, and there is nothing that will persuade me to depart from it throughout the entire narrative, you have what you desired. But it is worthwhile to take up the line of the family of the emperors from a little further back, so that we may know who was born from whom, and whom he himself, having begotten, appointed to reign, establishing the others to be subject to him. 1.11 The emperor then Alexios, surnamed Angelos, having betrothed his daughter to Theodore Laskaris, passed the imperial rule on to him. But he, in turn, lacking a male child, joined his daughter Irene in marriage to John Batatzes, who was of the archontic class, and also appointed his son-in-law emperor. And to him a son, Theodore, was born, who also reigned over the Romans. And from him was born John, during whose time the imperial line of the family was cut off, and the empire passed to Michael Palaiologos; who indeed begot three male children, Andronikos, who also took up the imperial sceptres, and Constantine, who was born in the purple, and a third, Theodore; but also as many female children, Irene and Eudokia and Anna. This emperor Andronikos, the son of the emperor Michael, having been joined in two marriages, from Anna, the daughter of the king of Hungary, begot two male children, Michael, who reigned with him, and his brother Constantine, who was named despotes, as having been born after the emperor and holding the second place in all things. And from Irene, who was joined to him in a second marriage, the daughter of the marquis of Montferrat, ruler of Lombardy, he begot three sons, John, Theodore, and Demetrios, and one daughter, Simonis. And the emperor Michael, the son of the aforementioned emperor Andronikos, having joined to himself in marriage the daughter of the king of Armenia, had from her children the emperor 1.12 Andronikos and Manuel the despotes, and daughters, Anna and Theodora. Now the things which happened during the reigns of the afore-recorded emperors, from the time of Laskaris until the emperor Michael, the second of the Palaiologoi, have been the subject of no small endeavor for many to write; from which you yourself and anyone else who might wish could learn accurately about the deeds; unless they too, being held by the aforementioned causes, bid farewell to speaking the truth, and instead rendered their narrative of events according to how they happened to feel about those they were discussing, believing it sufficient for the reward of their labors either to praise one who is loved, or to insult one who is hated, while caring nothing for the truth. But from the time when the emperor Michael, that is, the second of the Palaiologoi, departed this present life, either no one has written down the deeds wrought by the two emperors both in times of peace and in those when they warred against each other for the rule; or if indeed someone has written, I do not think he could have grasped the truth purely, since he did not have accurate knowledge of the events, many and various things having happened in a short time. Therefore you have done well in wishing to learn from one who knows clearly, and I, delaying not at all, will set forth the narrative of events, preferring nothing to the truth. 1.13 1. This emperor Michael, therefore, co-reigning with Andronikos the emperor and his father, and having had children, as we have already said, two males and as many daughters, gave one of his daughters, Anna, in marriage to Thomas the despotes, the son of Nikephoros the despotes, ruler of Akarnania; and Theodora to the king of the Mysians
