Rusticus the prefect said to Hierax: Are you a Christian? Hierax said: Yes, I am a Christian, worshipping the same God. Rusticus the prefect said: Did Justin make you Christians? Hierax said: I have been a Christian for a long time. Paeon, standing by, said: I too am a Christian. Rusticus said: Who taught you? Paeon said: We received it from our parents. Euelpistus said: I indeed gladly heard the word of Justin, but I received being a Christian from my parents. Rusticus said: Where are your parents? Euelpistus said: In Cappadocia. Rusticus the prefect says to Hierax: Where are your parents? Hierax said: They are dead. And I was brought away from Phrygia a long time ago. Rusticus the prefect said to Liberian: Are you also a Christian? Liberian said: I too am a pious Christian. The prefect says to Justin: If you are scourged and beheaded, are you convinced that you will ascend into heaven? Justin said: I hope from endurance, if I endure; and I know that for those who have lived rightly the divine gift remains until the conflagration. Rusticus the prefect said: So you suppose this, that you will ascend? Justin said: I do not suppose, but I am precisely persuaded. Rusticus the prefect said: If you do not obey, you will be punished. Justin said: It is our prayer that, having been punished, we may be saved. Rusticus the prefect pronounced sentence: Let those who have been unwilling to sacrifice to the gods be scourged and led away according to the sequence of the laws. But the holy martyrs, glorifying God, going out to the accustomed place, completed their martyrdom in the confession of our Savior, to whom be glory and power with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and for ages of ages. Amen.
