trophies and the victories against the demons. And neither struck with terror by the fear of what was happening, nor instructed by the greatness of the apostolic achievements, so suddenly, with but a single day in between, you leap and shout, overlooking your own soul being dragged away captive by the passions? But if you wanted to see a race of irrational creatures, why did you not yoke the irrational passions within you, anger and desire, and place upon them the yoke of philosophy, that is good and light, and set over them right reason, and drive toward the prize of the upward call, running not from filth to filth, but from earth to heaven? For this form of horse racing, along with the pleasure, has much benefit. But leaving your own affairs to be carried along simply and at random, you sat for the sake of another’s victory, spending such a great day idly and in vain and for evil.
2. Do you not know that just as we, when entrusting money to our servants, demand an accounting from them down to a single obol; so also God will demand an account from us for the days of our life, how we have spent each day? What then shall we say? And what defense shall we make, when we are required to give an account for that day? The sun rose for you, and the moon lit up the night, and a varied chorus of stars shone forth; winds blew for you, rivers ran; seeds sprouted for you, and plants grew up, and the course of nature kept its proper order, and day appeared and 56.266 night passed away; and all these things happened for you; but you, while the creations serve you, fulfill the desire of the devil? And having rented so great a house from God, I mean this world, you did not pay the rent. And the first day was not enough, but on the second as well, when you should have rested a little from the wickedness that arises, you went up again to the theaters, running from smoke into fire, letting yourself down into another, more grievous pit. Old men shamed their gray hairs, and young men cast down their youth headlong, and fathers led their children, from the very beginning plunging their age, inexperienced in evil, into the pits of wickedness, so that one would not err in calling such men child-killers instead of fathers, destroying by wickedness the souls of those they begot. "And what wickedness?" he says. For this I grieve, that even while being sick, you do not know that you are sick, so that you might seek the physician. You became filled with adultery, and you ask, "what wickedness?" Have you not heard Christ saying, "He who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her"? "What then if I do not look," he says, "in order to lust?" And how will you be able to persuade me? For he who does not restrain himself from looking, but puts so much effort into such a thing, how after looking will you be able to remain unstained? For is your body a stone? Is it iron? You are clothed in flesh, human flesh, which is set on fire by desire more grievously than grass. And what am I saying about the theater? In the marketplace we are often disturbed if we meet a woman; but you, sitting up there, where there is so much invitation to indecency, seeing a harlot with uncovered head entering with much shamelessness, clothed in golden garments, acting effeminately, being wanton, singing harlot's songs, with languid limbs, uttering shameful words, behaving in such an indecent manner, that if you who have seen it should take it into your thought, you bow your head down; do you dare to say that you suffer nothing human? For is your body a stone? Is it iron? For I will not shrink from saying the same things again. Are you more of a philosopher than those great and noble men, who were brought down by a mere glance? Have you not heard what Solomon says: "Will a man walk on hot coals, and not burn his feet? Will a man bind up fire in his bosom, and not burn his clothes? So is he that goes in to another man's wife." For even if you were not entangled with the harlot, yet with desire 56.267 you had intercourse, and in your mind you committed the sin. And not only at that time, but also of the theater
