the Christ-slaying Pharisee becomes a Christ-bearing Galilean. Repentance, refining the broken soul, immediately changes the thorn-bearing heart. Some say that the eagle, when it grows old, being lifted to a soaring height, is renewed by casting itself into a most clear spring. Such is repentance; for having raised the heart that possesses it to a soaring height, with the spring of tears it wipes away the oldness of sins, and clothes it in the newness of the Spirit. Therefore the Spirit also says to the soul that is in repentance, Your youth will be renewed like an eagle’s.
Knowing this to be more effective than all the virtues, the great physician of our souls advises, saying: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Approach 60.767 repentance with boldness, Look at the ancient generations and see: who ever trusted in the Lord and was put to shame? or who has persevered in the fear of him and was forsaken? or who has called upon him, and he has overlooked him? Because the Lord is compassionate and merciful, and forgives sins, and saves in time of affliction. And do not be ashamed, child, to confess your sins; for there is a shame that brings on sin, and there is a shame that is glory and grace. The soul that repents here receives the remission of sins; For in Hades, what will it confess to the Lord? Groan over your sins, so that you may be saved; For when, he says, you have turned and groaned, then you will be saved. Declare, he says, your sins, that you may be justified in your words, and may overcome when you are judged. Declare your sins. The sins of my youth and my ignorance, do not remember. According to your mercy, remember me for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. Take heed, for this life is like a passing shadow. Where are the pleasures of times past? where is the empty care? where are the afflictions? where are the comforts? are they not driven like a mist by a tempest? All things have passed by. Let us not look only at the present life, but also at the future, Remember, he says, your end, and you will not sin forever. Behold the day and the hour of your departure, what you wish to be when you are cast on your bed and powerless, having no one to help you; see those standing around you: friends, neighbors, relatives, brothers, servants; all with one accord wailing, weeping, inconsolable, lamenting for you; likewise the children standing on either side, and seeking their father's voice as usual, whimpering and not hearing you; your wife again in great pain, longing for death before you for your sake; fearsome angels demanding the debt of your soul. If the soul has done things worthy of honor, it will be escorted by the angels; but if it has been brought up mercilessly 60.768 toward its fellow poor, it will be judged mercilessly; For judgment, he says, is without mercy to the one who has not shown mercy. Enter into the chamber of your soul; become a spectator of what you have done; weigh your good deeds against your evil ones, and if you see that the evil ones outweigh them, bury them with good works, as you are about to see your sins face to face. Behold for me the sleepless worm, and the lightless chaos, the unquenchable fire, which is not quenched by water, but is conquered by repentance. O repentance, that quenches the unquenchable and eternal fire, and grinds to powder the sleepless worm, and makes level and enlightens the lightless chaos;
O repentance, unbreakable wall of the soul, a fortified city, in which the Father and Son and Holy Spirit reign; O repentance, that has loosed the sting of death, and brings the devil underfoot, and slays the dragon. and that sings praises to Christ, and makes life blossom; O repentance, that makes joy to flourish in mourning, and rejoices in tears, and through tears takes away eternal tears; O repentance, that sows in tears, and reaps in joy; O repentance, that in the
