humbles, but saves and gives life to the soul. Therefore, remain unceasingly in the heart, crying out the name of the Lord Jesus, so that the heart may swallow the Lord and the Lord the heart, and the two become one. But this work is not of one day or two, but requires much time and season and struggle and labor, until the enemy is cast out and Christ dwells within; for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the spiritual forces of wickedness, as the apostle says.
Of the same. Thus should one who prays, pray, as one who has gathered and focused his whole mind to call upon God with a soul in anguish and neither extending long speeches, nor stretching out the supplication at length, but to say few and simple words; for being heard lies not in the multitude of words, but in the watchfulness of the mind. And this can be seen from Anna, the mother in Samuel. Therefore, one who prays must not extend long speeches but pray the prayers continuously. Christ through Paul commanded with few interruptions. For if you stretch your speech to length, often becoming neglectful, you have given the devil much license to approach and trip you up and lead your mind away from what is being said. But if you make your prayers continuous and frequent, you will be able to fill up all the time with frequency, making the prayers with much watchfulness. Of the same. Do you wish to learn the vigilance of prayer and watchfulness and perseverance? Go to Anna, learn what she did. They all rose, it says, from the table and immediately she did not turn to sleep, nor to rest. Whence it seems to me that even while sitting at the table she was light and not weighed down by any foods; for she would not have shed so many tears. And not because she uttered a loud and great voice for this reason, but because she cried out great things inwardly in her heart. For her voice was not heard, it says, and God heard her; for there is not so much need of voice as of mind, nor of the stretching out of hands as of a focused soul, nor indeed of posture, but of intent. For even if you are outside the church, cry out and say: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, even if not moving the lips, but crying out with the mind; for God hears even those who are silent. A place is not sought, but a manner. And wherever you may be, pray. You are a temple, do not seek a place. The sea was in front, the Egyptians behind, and in the middle Moses, speaking nothing. And God says to him: why do you cry out to me? And you, therefore, when temptation comes upon you, take refuge in God, call upon the Lord Jesus. For is he a man, that you should go to a place? God is always near. While you are still speaking he will say: behold, I am here. You have not yet finished the prayer and he himself gives the request. For if you have a mind purified of unfitting passions, even if you are in the marketplace, or on the road, or on the sea, or in an inn, or wherever you may be, by calling upon God you will be able to obtain your request.
Of Basil the Great. "Often," one says, "I have asked and have not received." It is certainly because you asked wrongly, or without faith, or distractedly, or for things not profitable for you. But even if you have often asked for profitable things, yet you did not persevere; for it is written: in your patience possess your souls, and he who endures to the end will be saved. For if you do not ask with labor and much perseverance, you do not receive. For it is necessary first to desire, and having desired to seek truly in faith and patience the things that are profitable for each one, being judged in nothing by one's own conscience as asking neglectfully or slothfully; and then you receive, when God wills. For he knows what is profitable for you better than you do, and perhaps for this reason he delays, wisely contriving your perseverance toward him, so that you may know what a gift of God is and guard what is given with fear. For everything that one acquires with much labor, one is zealous to guard, so that by losing it, he does not also lose his great labor and the grace of the Lord

Ἀλλὰ τὸ ἔργον τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστι μιᾶς ἡμέρας ἢ δύο, ἀλλὰ χρόνου πολλοῦ καὶ καιροῦ καὶ ἀγῶνος καὶ πόνου χρεία, ἕως οὗ ἐκβληθῇ ὁ ἐχθρὸς καὶ ἐνοικήσῃ ὁ Χριστός· οὐκ ἔστι γὰρ ἡμῖν ἡ πάλη πρὸς αἷμα καὶ σάρκα, ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὰς ἀρχάς, πρὸς τὰς ἐξουσίας, πρὸς τὰ πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας, ὥς φησιν ὁ ἀπόστολος.
Τοῦ αὐτοῦ Οὕτω δεῖ τὸν εὐχόμενον εὔχεσθαι, ὡς ὅλην αὐτοῦ συναγαγόντα καὶ συντείνοντα τὴν διάνοιαν καλεῖν τὸν Θεὸν μετὰ ὀδυνωμένης ψυχῆς καὶ μηδὲ μακροὺς ἀποτείνοντα λόγους, μηδὲ εἰς μῆκος τὴν ἱκετηρίαν ἐκτείνειν, ἀλλ' ὀλίγα καὶ ψιλὰ λέγειν ῥήματα· οὐ γὰρ ἐν τῷ πλήθει τῶν ῥημάτων, ἀλλ' ἐν τῇ νήψει τῆς διανοίας κεῖται τὸ ἀκουσθῆναι. Καὶ τοῦτο ἀπὸ τῶν τὴν κατὰ Σαμουὴλ μητέρα τὴν Ἄνναν ἔστιν ἰδεῖν. ∆εῖ τοίνυν τὸν εὐχόμενον μὴ μακροὺς ἀποτείνειν λόγους καὶ συνεχῶς εὔχεσθαι τὰς εὐχάς. Ὁ Χριστὸς διὰ Παύλου ἐκέλευσεν ἐξ ὀλίγων διαλειμμάτων. Ἂν γὰρ εἰς μῆκος ἐκτείνῃς τὸν λόγον, ὀλιγωρήσας πολλάκις πολλὴν ἔδωκας τῷ διαβόλῳ τὴν ἄδειαν προσελθεῖν καὶ ὑποσκελίσαι σε καὶ τὴν διάνοιαν ἀπαγαγεῖν τῶν λεγομένων. Ἂν δὲ συνεχεῖς καὶ πυκνὰς ποιῇς τὰς εὐχάς, τόν τε καιρὸν ἅπαντα τῇ πυκνότητι διαλαμβάνειν δυνήσῃ τὰς εὐχὰς μετὰ πολλῆς ποιεῖν τῆς νήψεως. Τοῦ αὐτοῦ Βούλει μαθεῖν ἀγρυπνίαν προσευχῆς καὶ νῆψιν καὶ προσεδρείαν; Ἄπιθι πρὸς τὴν Ἄνναν, μάθε τί ἐποίησεν ἐκείνη. Ἀνέστησαν, φησί, πάντες ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης καὶ εὐθέως ἐκείνη οὐ πρὸς ὕπνον ἐτρέπετο, οὐ πρὸς ἀνάπαυσιν. Ὅθεν μοι δοκεῖ καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης καθημένη κούφη τις οὖσα καὶ μὴ βαρεῖσθαι σιτίοις τισίν· οὐ γὰρ ἂν τοσαῦτα ἠφίει δάκρυα. Καὶ οὐκ ἐπειδὴ λαμπρὰν καὶ μεγάλην ἀφῆκε φωνὴν διὰ τοῦτο, ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ μεγάλα ἔνδον κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν ἐβόα. Ἡ φωνὴ γὰρ αὐτῆς οὐκ ἠκούετο, φησίν, καὶ εἰσήκουσεν αὐτῆς ὁ Θεός· οὐδὲν γὰρ οὕτω φωνῆς χρεία ὡς διανοίας, οὐδὲ ἐκτάσεως χειρῶν ὡς συντεταμένης ψυχῆς, οὐδὲ γὰρ σχήματος, ἀλλὰ φρονήματος. Κἂν γὰρ ἔξω ἐκκλησίας ᾖς, κράζε καὶ λέγε· Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, ἐλέησόν με, εἰ καὶ μὴ κινῶν τὰ χείλη, ἀλλὰ τῇ διανοίᾳ βοῶν· καὶ σιωπώντων γὰρ ἀκούει ὁ Θεός. Οὐ ζητεῖται τόπος, ἀλλὰ τρόπος. Κἂν ὅπουπερ ἂν ᾖς, εὔχου. Ναὸς εἶ, μὴ ζήτει τόπον. Θάλασσα ἦν ἔμπροσθεν, ὄπισθεν Αἰγύπτιοι καὶ μέσον ὁ Μωϋσῆς μηδὲν λαλῶν. Καὶ λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Θεός· τί βοᾷς πρός με; Καὶ σὺ τοίνυν, ὅταν πειρασμὸς ἐπέλθῃ σοι, ἐπὶ τὸν Θεὸν κατάφυγε, τὸν δεσπότην Ἰησοῦν κάλεσον. Μὴ γὰρ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν, ἵνα ἀπέλθῃς εἰς τόπον; Ὁ Θεὸς ἀεὶ ἐγγύς ἐστιν. Ἔτι σοῦ λαλοῦντος ἐρεῖ· ἰδοὺ πάρειμι. Οὐδέπω τελεῖς τὴν εὐχὴν καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν αἴτησιν δίδωσιν. Ἐὰν γὰρ τὴν διάνοιαν ἔχῃς καθαρεύουσαν τῶν ἀτόπων παθῶν, κἂν ἐν ἀγορᾷ ᾖς, κἂν ἐν ὁδῷ, κἂν ἐν θαλάσσῃ, κἂν ἐν πανδοχείῳ, κἂν ὅπουπερ ἂν ᾖς, δυνήσει τὸν Θεὸν καλέσας ἐπιτυχεῖν τῆς αἰτήσεως.
Τοῦ μεγάλου Βασιλείου Πολλάκις, φησίν, ᾔτησα καὶ οὐκ ἔλαβον. Πάντως ὅτι κακῶς ᾔτησας ἢ ἀπίστως ἢ μετεώρως ἢ τὰ μὴ συμφέροντά σοι. Εἰ δὲ καὶ τὰ συμφέροντα πολλάκις ᾔτησας, ἀλλ' οὐ παρέμεινας· γέγραπται γάρ· ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσασθε τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν καὶ ὁ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται. Ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ αἰτήσῃς μετὰ καμάτου καὶ παραμονῆς πολλῆς, οὐ λαμβάνεις. ∆εῖ γὰρ πρότερον ποθῆσαι, ποθήσαντα δὲ ζητῆσαι ἐξ ἀληθείας ἐν πίστει καὶ ὑπομονῇ τὰ ἑκάστῳ συμφέροντα ἐν μηδενὶ κρινόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ οἰκείου συνειδότος ὡς ἀμελῶς ἢ ῥᾳθύμως αἰτῶν· καὶ τότε λαμβάνεις, ὅτε θέλει ὁ Θεός. Κρεῖττον γάρ σου οἶδε τὰ συμφέροντά σου καὶ ἴσως διὰ τοῦτο ἀναβάλλεται τὴν πρὸς αὐτὸν προσεδρείαν σου σοφιζόμενος, ἵνα γνῷς τί ἐστι δῶρον Θεοῦ καὶ φυλάξῃς τὸ δοθὲν μετὰ φόβου. Πᾶν γάρ, ὃ μετὰ καμάτου πολλοῦ κτᾶταί τις, σπουδάζει τοῦτο φυλάσσειν, ἵνα μὴ ἀπολέσας αὐτὸ ἀπολέσῃ καὶ τὸν πολὺν αὑτοῦ κάματον καὶ τὴν χάριν τοῦ Κυρίου
