of the falling asleep in slumber, He said with boldness: Lazarus our friend is dead; and I rejoice for your sakes, that you may believe, because I was not there; but let us go to him. He who does not will the death of the sinner, now rejoices at the death of a friend: I rejoice, not for My own sake, nor for the one who has died, but for your sakes; for I have used his death for the foundation of your faith. O death, the exultation of Christ! 62.777 O death, full of life! O death, the deliverance from death, the author of salvation, the resurrection of the fallen, the repose of the weary, the strength of the weak, the refreshing of the righteous! O death, the destruction of the devil, the deposition of demons, the renewal of the first-formed Adam! O death, co-worker of gladness, herald of incorruptibility, dancer of joy! But to speak concisely, Jesus comes to Bethany, the sisters of Lazarus met Him, they fall at the Lord's knees weeping and saying: Lord, if you had been here, our brother would not have died. For was He not there? But in the body He was not there, yet in His divinity He was not only there, but also in the heavens. For how did He know when Lazarus died, if He was not present according to the invisible power of His divinity? And they said: Lord, if you had been here, our brother would not have died.

But the Lord said to them: Believe, and you will see the glory of God; teaching that faith is the author of good works. And seeing them weeping, and the Jews who were present, He was deeply moved in spirit, and troubled Himself, and said: Where have you laid him? What is this, 'He was deeply moved in spirit'? Wait, beloved, and after a little while you will find the solution to what you seek. He troubled Himself, not as we are troubled by cowardice or grief, but He Himself troubled Himself, and says: Where have you laid him? For did He not know where he was buried, He who knew when he had died? But He mixes human words with divine miracles, in order to show that He was also man, as the prophet also says: He is also a man, and who will know him? But He stated this first to signify that He is also something else, which is God. Where have you laid him? And Mary says, 'Come and see, Lord.' And Jesus wept. But what need was there to weep for him whom He was about to raise after a short time? But Jesus wept, to show us His compassion and love for humankind; Jesus wept, to teach weeping with those who weep by deed rather than by word; Jesus wept; He wept, He did not mourn, avoiding being completely tearless as something harsh and inhuman, but rejecting excessive mourning as ignoble and unmanly; and imposing order upon compassion, He wept.

He comes to the cave, and sees a stone lying upon the tomb. He commands the Jews standing by to roll away the stone from the mouth of the cave. He who says: 'If you have faith 62.778 like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and it will be done for you;' how is it that You Yourself are now unable to roll away the stone? But 'I do not do this as one who is unable,' He says, 'but so that what is happening may not seem to be an illusion, I command these very Jews to roll away the stone with their own hands, leaving the greatest sign for Myself; so that they themselves might become witnesses of the signs worked by Me.' Then after they rolled away the stone, Jesus, looking up to heaven, said: 'I thank you, Father, that you have heard Me.' But when did He pray? Now receive, beloved, the solution you sought a little while ago for the saying: for when He was deeply moved in spirit, then He prayed. And having said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Lazarus, come forth.' And immediately the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with burial cloths. O the power of a voice that rent Hades, that shattered bronze gates, that crushed iron bars, that laid the devil low, that abolished death, that raised the dead! O the power of a voice, that gathered and raised up the scattered limbs into one, and that brought into being that which was from non-being!

κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου, εἶπε μετὰ παῤῥησίας· Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν ἀπέθανε· καὶ χαίρω δι' ὑμᾶς, ἵνα πιστεύσητε, ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ· ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν. Ὁ μὴ θέλων τὸν θάνατον τοῦ ἁμαρτωλοῦ, χαίρει νῦν ἐπὶ θανάτῳ φίλου· Χαίρω, οὐ δι' ἐμαυτὸν, οὐδὲ διὰ τὸν τεθνεῶτα, ἀλλὰ δι' ὑμᾶς· κέχρημαι γὰρ τῷ θανάτῳ πρὸς τὸν τῆς ὑμετέρας πίστεως θεμέλιον. Ὢ θάνατος Χριστοῦ ἀγαλλίασις! 62.777 ὢ θάνατος, ζωῆς ἀνάπλεως! ὢ θάνατος θανάτου λυτήριον, σωτηρίας ἀρχηγὸς, πεπτωκότων ἀνάστασις, καμνόντων ἀνάπαυσις, ἀσθενούντων ῥῶσις, δικαίων ἀνάψυξις! ὢ θάνατος, διαβόλου κατάλυσις, δαιμόνων καθαίρεσις, τοῦ πρωτοπλάστου Ἀδὰμ ἀνανέωσις! ὦ θάνατε, εὐφροσύνης συνεργὲ, ἀφθαρσίας μηνυτὰ, χαρᾶς χορευτά! Ἵνα δὲ ἐπιτεμὼν τῷ λόγῳ εἴπω, ἔρχεται Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν Βηθανίαν, ἀπήντησαν αὐτῷ αἱ ἀδελφαὶ Λαζάρου, προσπίπτουσι τοῖς γόνασι τοῦ Κυρίου κλαίουσαι καὶ λέγουσαι· Κύριε, εἰ ἦς ὧδε, οὐκ ἂν ἀπέθανεν ἡμῶν ὁ ἀδελφός. Ἆρα γὰρ οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖ; Ἀλλὰ τῷ μὲν σώματι οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖ, τῇ δὲ θεότητι οὐ μόνον ἐκεῖ, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν οὐρανοῖς. Πῶς γὰρ ἐγίνωσκε τὸ πότε ἀπέθανεν ὁ Λάζαρος, εἰ μὴ παρὼν ἦν κατὰ τὴν ἀόρατον δύναμιν τῆς θεότητος; Καὶ ἔλεγον· Κύριε, εἰ ἦς ὧδε, οὐκ ἂν ἀπέθανεν ἡμῶν ὁ ἀδελφός.

Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ Κύριος· Πιστεύσατε, καὶ ὄψεσθε τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ· διδάσκων ὅτι τῶν ἔργων τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἡ πίστις ἐστὶν ἀρχηγός. Καὶ θεωρήσας αὐτὰς κλαιούσας, καὶ τοὺς παρόντας Ἰουδαίους, Ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι, καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτὸν, καὶ εἶπε· Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν; Τί ἐστι τὸ, Ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι; Ἔκδεξαι, ἀγαπητὲ, καὶ μετ' ὀλίγον εὑρήσεις τοῦ ζητουμένου τὴν λύσιν. Ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτὸν, οὐχ ὡς ἡμεῖς ὑπὸ δειλίας ἢ λύπης ταρασσόμεθα, ἀλλ' αὐτὸς ἑαυτὸν ἐτάραξε, καὶ λέγει· Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν; Ἆρα γὰρ ἠγνόει ποῦ τέθαπται, ὁ ἐγνωκὼς πότε τετελεύτηκεν; Ἀλλὰ μιγνύει τὰ ἀνθρώπινα ῥήματα τοῖς θείοις θαυματουργήμασιν, ἵνα δείξῃ. ὅτι καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἦν, καθὰ καὶ ὁ προφήτης λέγει· Καὶ ἄνθρωπός ἐστι, καὶ τίς γνώσεται αὐτόν; Τοῦτο δὲ προέταξεν ἵνα σημαίνῃ, ὅτι καὶ ἄλλο τί ἐστιν, ὅπερ ἐστὶ Θεός. Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν; Ἡ δὲ Μαρία, Ἔρχου, φησὶ, καὶ ἴδε, Κύριε. Καὶ ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς. Τίς δὲ χρεία δακρύειν, ὃν ἔμελλεν ἀνιστᾷν μετ' ὀλίγον; Ἀλλ' ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ἵνα τὸ συμπαθὲς καὶ τὸ φιλάνθρωπον περὶ τοὺς ὁμοφύλους ἡμῖν ὑποδείξῃ· ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ἵνα τὸ κλαίειν μετὰ κλαιόντων ἔργῳ μᾶλλον ἢ λόγῳ διδάξῃ· ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἐδάκρυσεν, οὐκ ἐπένθησε, τὸ μὲν ἀδάκρυτον παντελῶς ὡς ἀπηνὲς καὶ ἀπάνθρωπον παραιτούμενος, τὸ δὲ φιλοπενθὲς ὡς ἀγεννὲς καὶ ἄνανδρον διωθούμενος· τάξιν δὲ ἐπιτιθεὶς τῇ συμπαθείᾳ, ἐδάκρυσεν.

Ἔρχεται ἐπὶ τὸ σπήλαιον, καὶ θεωρεῖ λίθον ἐπικείμενον τῷ μνήματι. Κελεύει τοῖς παρεστῶσιν Ἰουδαίοις ἀποκυλῖσαι τὸν λίθον ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ σπηλαίου. Ὁ λέγων· Ἐὰν πίστιν ἔχητε 62.778 ὡς κόκκον σινάπεως, ἐρεῖτε τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ, Ἄρθητι καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ γενήσεται ὑμῖν· πῶς νῦν αὐτὸς ἀδυνατεῖς ἀποκυλῖσαι τὸν λίθον; Ἀλλ' οὐχ ὡς ἀδυνάτων τοῦτο ποιῶ, φησὶν, ἀλλ' ἵνα μὴ δόξωσι φαντασίαν εἶναι τὸ γινόμενον, ἐπιτάσσω αὐτοῖς τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἰδίαις χερσὶν ἀποκυλῖσαι τὸν λίθον, τὸ μέγιστον σημεῖον ἐμαυτῷ καταλιμπάνων· ἵνα αὐτοὶ μάρτυρες γένωνται τῶν ὑπ' ἐμοῦ γενομένων σημείων. Εἶτα μετὰ τὸ ἀποκυλῖσαι τὸν λίθον, ἀναβλέψας ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, εἶπεν· Εὐχαριστῶ σοι, Πάτερ, ὅτι ἤκουσάς μου. Πότε δὲ προσηύξατο; Νῦν λάμβανε, ἀγαπητὲ, τὴν πρὸ βραχέος ζητουμένην παρὰ σοῦ λύσιν τοῦ ῥητοῦ· ὅτε γὰρ ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι, τότε προσηύξατο. Καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν, ἔκραξε φωνῇ μεγάλῃ, λέγων, Λάζαρε, δεῦρο ἔξω. Καὶ εὐθέως ἐξῆλθεν ὁ τεθνηκὼς δεδεμένος τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τοὺς πόδας κειρίαις. Ὢ φωνῆς δύναμις ᾅδην διαῤῥήξασα, πύλας χαλκᾶς συντρίψασα, μοχλοὺς σιδηροῦς συνθλάσασα, διάβολον καταστρώσασα, θάνατον καταργήσασα, νεκρὸν ἀνεγείρασα! ὢ φωνῆς δύναμις, τὰ διεστῶτα μέλη εἰς ἓν συναγαγοῦσα καὶ ἀνορθοῦσα, καὶ τὸ ἐξ οὐκ ὄντων εἰς τὸ εἶναι παραγαγοῦσα!
