forcing the condemned to confess what they know against themselves, but the judge of impiety cuts out the tongue, forcing it to be silent about what he knows against himself. O what a terrible invention of evil artifice! "I did not," he says, "drive out the soul that thinks the things of Christ, even if I cut off the tongue that speaks for Christ." Cut out the tongue, O tyrant, that you may learn that nature can speak eloquently for Christ even without a tongue; carve out the tongue from the mouth, that you may learn that he who promised the gifts of tongues is true. For he cut out the instrument of the tongue, but speech rushed forth more vigorously, 50.614 as if freed from some impediment of the tongue; a new and paradoxical sight: a fleshly man speaking without flesh to fleshly men. Therefore, the song of the prophet is fitting for the martyr: "Our mouth was filled with joy, and our tongue with gladness;" the mouth was filled with joy, having offered the tongue as a new sacrifice to Christ; the tongue had great gladness, having appeared as a forerunner-martyr of the martyr. O tongue that preceded the soul to the assemblies of the martyrs! O mouth that gave birth to a hidden martyr! O tongue that acquired the mouth as an altar! O mouth that acquired the tongue as a sacrificial victim! You had a temple unawares, O noble one, your mouth, a temple in which you sacrificed your kindred tongue as a paradoxical lamb.
βʹ. What orator, then, could worthily crown your virtues? You received from nature
a tongue, but you nurtured it into a martyr; you received a mouth as a guard for the tongue, but you made the mouth an altar for the tongue; you received a plectrum for speaking, but you showed it forth as a reaped ear of grain; you received a tongue as a servant of words, but you sacrificed it to Christ as a spotless sheep. With what fitting address shall I honor your tongue? With what name shall I adorn your tongue? Executioners brought the iron to it, but it did not leap away like the bound Isaac, but, as if lying on the altar of the mouth, it awaited the blow with pleasure, teaching the tongues of men that they must not only speak for Christ, but also be slain. You seized the honor of the patriarch’s sacrifice, noble one, having offered a one-of-a-kind shoot of a tongue instead of a one-of-a-kind child. Well then did Christ plant a second tongue in you in its place; for He found you to be a good cultivator of the first. Well did He grant you the fleshless tongue; for a fleshly one was not fitting for an angelic mind. Well did He render to you the reward for the tongue. You lent your tongue to the Master for a sacrifice, and He lent back a voice to it for oratory; and there was an exchange between the tongue and Christ with one another, the tongue being cut for Christ, and Christ speaking for the tongue. Where now for us is Macedonius, who fights against the Paraclete who gave the gift of tongues?
And that I am not lying in attributing the gifts of grace to the divinity of the Paraclete, our witness is the blessed Paul who now cries out to your love of hearing: "All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one individually as he wills." "As He wills," he says, not "as He is commanded." But lest by adding some additions to these things we bury your memory with the multitude, let us thus depart from here remembering this powerful voice on behalf of the Paraclete, thinking great things against them, yet for the present forgiving 50.615 them in their error, and worshipping the divinity of the Paraclete. The prophetic trumpet, therefore, presignifying the universal harmony in Christ, said, "For they shall know me," it says, "from the least of them to the greatest of them," and, "Every tongue shall confess to the true God." And the prophet, as I said, encloses every tongue in the net of the knowledge of God; but we today

φύσεως γλῶσσαν, σὺ δὲ αὐτὴν ἐξέθρεψας μάρτυρα· ἔλαβες στόμα φυλακτήριον γλώσ σης, σὺ δὲ τῇ γλώσσῃ τὸ στόμα βωμὸν κατεσκεύα σας· ἔλαβες εἰς τὸ φθέγγεσθαι πλῆκτρον, σὺ δὲ αὐτὸ τεμνόμενον ἄσταχυν ἀνέδειξας· ἔλαβες γλῶσσαν ῥη μάτων διάκονον, σὺ δὲ αὐτὴν ἄμωμον τῷ Χριστῷ κατέθυσας πρόβατον. Ὅτι δὲ οὐ ψεύδομαι τῇ τοῦ Παρακλήτου θεότητι τὰς τῶν χαρισμάτων δωρεὰς περιάπτων, μάρτυς ἡμῖν ὁ μα κάριος Παῦλος ὁ νῦν πρὸς τὴν ὑμετέραν φιληκοΐαν βοῶν· Πάντα ταῦτα ἐνεργεῖ ἓν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦ μα, διαιροῦν ἰδίᾳ ἑκάστῳ, καθὼς βούλεται. Κα θὼς βούλεται, φησὶν, οὐ καθὼς ἐπιτάττεται. Ἀλλ' ἵνα μή τινας πρὸς τούτοις ἐπιθέντες προσθήκας τῷ πλή θει τὴν ὑμετέραν καταχώσωμεν μνήμην, ταύτην οὖσαν ἰσχυρὰν τὴν φωνὴν ὑπὲρ τοῦ Παρακλήτου μεμνημένοι οὕτως ἐντεῦθεν ἐξέλθωμεν, μεγάλα μὲν κατ' ἐκείνων φρονοῦντες, συγγινώσκοντες δὲ τέως 50.615 αὐτοῖς πλανωμένοις, καὶ τὴν τοῦ Παρακλήτου προσ κυνοῦντες θεότητα.
