He exhorts, he transforms from painful things into a relief, lightening the weight of sins; he heals despondency with delight and sorrow with gladness. O his solicitude, O heavenly calling! Let us hasten, therefore, beloved, to show our zeal ever increasing, and to fulfill it with fitting good order and a proper purpose. For I wish today to stir up for you a word concerning this, which seems to be burdensome, but in truth is unoppressive and beneficial. For loving fathers also do this; they enjoin upon their children not only things that bring joy for a short time, but also things that bring pain; and they advise them not on things that immediately show their benefit, but also those that seem burdensome, but are salvific when fulfilled, and these things they teach with great diligence and securely require their observance. Perhaps we too. For this reason we propose this discourse, so that we may not spend our labor here in vain, so that while enduring the necessity of the vigil, we may not box without profit, so that our voices, dissolving into the air, may not echo to our loss rather than to our gain. For not even a merchant, setting out on long trading voyages, enduring the great assault of the winds and the uprising of the waves, would agree to endure such toils rashly and in vain; but for this reason he both cuts through seas and dares dangers and changes from place to place and passes all his nights sleeplessly, so that his merchandise may increase. Since if this were not so, but along with the profit he also incurred a loss of his capital, it would not be possible for him even to set sail, nor to endure those manifold dangers. 1.2 Knowing this, therefore, let us come here with fitting reverence, so that we do not go home having added to our sins instead of receiving remission for them. What then is sought and what is required of us? That those who send up the divine hymns should offer them, constrained by great fear and adorned with reverence. For there are some here, of whom I think your love is not ignorant, who, despising God, and considering the oracles of the Spirit as common things, let out disorderly shouts and are in no better state than madmen, shaking and turning about with their whole body and displaying habits foreign to a spiritual state. O wretched and miserable man, when you ought to send forth the angelic doxology fearing and trembling, and to make your confession to the creator with fear, and through it to ask for forgiveness of your offenses; you instead bring here the acts of mimes and dancers, disorderly stretching out your hands and leaping with your feet and twisting with your whole body. And how is it you do not fear, nor shudder, daring such sacred words? Do you not consider that the Master himself is invisibly present here and measures the movement of each one and calls the conscience to account? do you not consider that angels stand by this awesome table and attend it with fear? But you do not perceive these things, because your mind has been darkened by the sounds and sights in the theaters, and for this reason you confuse the things done there with the rites of the church, for this reason you make public the disorder of your soul with meaningless shouts. How then will you ask for forgiveness for your own sins? how will you move the Master to pity, offering your prayer so contemptuously? "Have mercy on me, O God," you say, and you display a character alien to mercy. "Save me," you cry, and you form a posture foreign to salvation. Ὢ τῆς αὐτοῦ κηδεμονίας, ὢ κλήσεως ἐπουρανίου; Σπεύσωμεν τοίνυν, ἀγαπητοί, αὐτὴν μὲν ἐπιτεινομένην ἐνδείκνυσθαι τὴν σπουδήν, μετὰ δὲ τῆς προσηκούσης εὐταξίας καὶ τοῦ πρέποντος σκοποῦ ταύτην ἀποπληροῦν. Καὶ γὰρ τὸν περὶ τούτου λόγον ὑμῖν σήμερον κινῆσαι βούλομαι, φορτικὸν μὲν εἶναι δοκοῦντα, ἀνεπαχθῆ δὲ καὶ ὠφέλιμον ὄντα τῇ ἀληθείᾳ. Οὕτω γὰρ καὶ φιλόστοργοι πατέρες ποιοῦσιν· οὐ μόνον τὰ πρὸς ὀλίγον χαροποιοῦντα, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ λυποῦντα παρεγγυῶνται τοῖς τέκνοις· καὶ οὐ τὰ αὐτόθεν ἐνδεικνύμενα τὴν ὠφέλειαν παραινοῦσιν αὐτοῖς, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὅσα δοκοῦσιν μὲν εἶναι φορτικά, σωτήρια δέ ἐστιν ἀποπληρούμενα, καὶ ταῦτα μετὰ πολλῆς τῆς ἐπιμελείας διδάσκουσιν καὶ ἀσφαλῶς τὴν αὐτῶν ἀπαιτοῦσιν συντήρησιν. Τάχα καὶ ἡμεῖς. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο τοῦτον προτείνομεν τὸν λόγον, ἵνα μὴ μάτην τὸν ἐνταῦθα καταβαλλώμεθα πόνον, ἵνα μὴ τὴν τῆς ἀγρυπνίας ὑπομένοντες ἀνάγκην, ἀνονήτως πυκτεύωμεν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς ἀέρα διαλυόμεναι αἱ φωναὶ ἐπὶ ζημίᾳ μᾶλλον ἐνηχοῖντο καὶ οὐκ ἐπὶ κέρδει. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἔμπορος μακρὰς μὲν ἐμπορίας στελλόμενος, πολλὴν δὲ τὴν τῶν πνευμάτων ἐμβολὴν καὶ τὴν τῶν κυμάτων ἐπανάστασιν ὑπομένων, καταδέξοιτο ἂν εἰκῇ καὶ μάτην τοὺς τοιούτους ὑπομένειν κόπους· ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο καὶ πελάγη τέμνει καὶ κινδύνων κατατολμᾷ καὶ τόπους ἐκ τόπων μεταμείβει καὶ ἀΰπνους πάσας διατελεῖ νύκτας, ἵνα τὰ τῆς ἐμπορίας αὐτῷ πλεονάζῃ. Ὡς εἴ γε τοῦτο μὴ προσῇ, ἀλλὰ σὺν τῷ κέρδει καὶ ἡ τῶν κεφαλαίων αὐτῷ ἐπιγένηται ζημία, οὐδὲ ἀπαίρειν ἔξεστιν αὐτῷ, οὐδὲ τοὺς πολυπλόκους ἐκείνους ὑπομένειν κινδύνους. 1.2 Τοῦτο τοίνυν εἰδότες, μετὰ τῆς προσηκούσης εὐλαβείας ἐνταῦθα παραγινώμεθα, ὅπως μὴ ἀντὶ ἁμαρτημάτων ἀφέσεως προσθήκην τούτων ποιησάμενοι, οἴκαδε πορευσώμεθα. Τί δέ ἐστι τὸ ζητούμενον καὶ ὃ παρ' ἡμῶν ἀπαιτεῖται; Τὸ τοὺς θείους ἀναπέμποντας ὕμνους, φόβῳ πολλῷ συνεσταλμένους καὶ εὐλαβείᾳ κεκοσμημένους, οὕτω προσφέρειν τούτους. Καὶ γάρ εἰσί τινες τῶν ἐνταῦθα, οὓς οὐδὲ τὴν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην ἀγνοεῖν οἶμαι, οἵτινες καταφρονοῦντες μὲν τοῦ Θεοῦ, τὰ δὲ τοῦ Πνεύματος λόγια ὡς κοινὰ ἡγούμενοι, φωνὰς ἀτάκτους ἀφιᾶσι καὶ τῶν μαινομένων οὐδὲν ἄμεινον διάκεινται, ὅλῳ τῷ σώματι δονούμενοι καὶ περιφερόμενοι καὶ ἀλλότρια τῆς πνευματικῆς καταστάσεως ἐπιδεικνύμενοι τὰ ἤθη. Ἄθλιε καὶ ταλαίπωρε, δέον δεδοικότα καὶ τρέμοντα τὴν ἀγγελικὴν δοξολογίαν ἐκπέμπειν, φόβῳ τε τὴν ἐξομολόγησιν τῷ κτίστῃ ποιεῖσθαι καὶ διὰ ταύτης συγγνώμην τῶν ἐπταισμένων αἰτεῖσθαι· σὺ δὲ τὰ μίμων καὶ ὀρχηστῶν ἐνταῦθα παράγεις, ἀτάκτως μὲν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπανατείνων καὶ τοῖς ποσὶν ἐφαλλόμενος καὶ ὅλῳ περικλώμενος τῷ σώματι. Καὶ πῶς οὐ δέδοικας, οὐδὲ φρίττεις τοιούτων κατατολμῶν λογίων; Οὐκ ἐννοεῖς, ὅτι αὐτὸς ἀοράτως ἐνταῦθα πάρεστιν ὁ ∆εσπότης καὶ ἑκάστου τὴν κίνησιν ἀναμετρεῖ καὶ τὸ συνειδὸς λογοθετεῖ; οὐκ ἐννοεῖς, ὅτι ἄγγελοι ταύτῃ τῇ φρικτῇ παρίστανται τραπέζῃ καὶ φόβῳ ταύτην περιέπουσιν; Ἀλλὰ σὺ ταῦτα οὐ κατανοεῖς, ἐπειδὴ ὑπὸ τῶν ἐν τοῖς θεάτροις ἀκουσμάτων τε καὶ θεαμάτων τὸν νοῦν συνεσκοτίσθης καὶ διὰ τοῦτο τὰ ἐκεῖσε πραττόμενα τοῖς τῆς ἐκκλησίας ἀναφύρεις τύποις, διὰ τοῦτο ταῖς ἀσήμοις κραυγαῖς τὸ τῆς ψυχῆς ἄτακτον δημοσιεύεις. Πῶς οὖν συγγνώμην ἐξαιτήσῃ τῶν οἰκείων ἁμαρτημάτων; πῶς εἰς οἶκτον ἐπισπάσῃ τὸν ∆εσπότην, οὕτω καταπεφρονημένως τὴν δέησιν προτεινόμενος; "Ἐλέησόν με, ὁ Θεός", λέγεις, καὶ τοῦ ἐλέους ἀλλότριον τὸ ἦθος ἐπιδείκνυσαι. "Σῶσόν με", βοᾷς, καὶ ξένον τῆς σωτηρίας τὸ σχῆμα διατυποῖς. Τί συντείνουσι πρὸς ἱκεσίαν χεῖρες ἐπὶ μετεωρισμῷ συνεχῶς ἐπαιρόμεναι καὶ ἀτάκτως
