John Chrysostom, On the Harlot and the Pharisee

Since they also did not have the means to repay through the achievements of good deeds, he forgave both, having accepted their faith, and tearing up the bond. Tell me, which of them will love him more? Then the Pharisee said, I suppose that the one to whom he forgave more. And the guilty one became his own judge, and found the Master praising him, saying: You have judged 61.712 rightly. Listen, then. Do you see this woman who owed less than you, and has brought more gifts of hospitality and presents? do you see this woman who became the ruin of many? the living tomb; the death that walks about? I entered your house; water, which is cheap and available to all, you did not bring for my feet; but she has brought springs of tears from her eyes for my feet.

You gave me no kiss; but she has laid her lips upon my feet. With oil you did not anoint my head, as one who has received mercy from me; but she with ointment has anointed my body, and with faith has perfumed my divinity. Therefore, I say to you, her many sins are forgiven; that what was said in the Psalms might be fulfilled, You have forgiven the iniquities of your people, and what was preached by John, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Μὴ ἐχόντων καὶ αὐτῶν ἀποδοῦναι διὰ κατορθωμάτων καλῶν πράξεων, ἀμφοτέροις ἐχαρίσατο πίστιν λαβὼν, καὶ σχίσας τὸ χειρόγραφον. Εἰπὲ, τίς αὐτὸν πλεῖον ἀγαπήσει; Εἶτα ὁ Φαρισαῖος, Ὑπολαμβάνω, ὅτι ᾧ τὸ πλεῖον ἐχαρίσατο, Καὶ δικαστὴς ἑαυτοῦ ὁ ὑπεύθυνος ἐγίνετο, καὶ τὸν ∆εσπότην ἐπαινέτην εὕρισκε λέγοντα· Ὀρθῶς 61.712 ἔκρινας. Ἄκουε λοιπόν· Βλέπεις ταύτην τὴν γυναῖκα τὴν ὀλιγότερά σου χρεωστήσασαν, καὶ πλείονα ξένια καὶ δῶρα προσκομίσασαν; βλέπεις ταύτην τὴν γυναῖκα τὴν πολλῶν ἀπώλειαν γενομένην; τὸν ἔμψυχον τάφον· τὸν περιφερόμενον θάνατον; Εἰσῆλθόν σου εἰς τὸν οἶκον· ὕδωρ, τὸ εὔωνον καὶ πᾶσι προκείμενον, ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας μου οὐκ ἤνεγκας· αὕτη δὲ πηγὰς δακρύων ἐξ ὀμμάτων τοῖς ποσί μου προσήνεγκε.

Φίλημά μοι οὐκ ἔδωκας· αὕτη δὲ τὰ χείλη αὐτῆς τοῖς ἐμοῖς ποσὶν ὑπέστρωσεν. Ἐλαίῳ τὴν κεφαλήν μου, ὡς ἐλεηθεὶς παρ' ἐμοῦ, οὐκ ἤλειψας· αὕτη δὲ μύρῳ τὸ σῶμα, τῇ δὲ πίστει τὴν θεότητά μου ἐμύρισεν. Οὗ χάριν λέγω σοι, ἀφέωνται αὐτῆς αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αἱ πολλαί· ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ἐν ψαλμοῖς εἰρημένον, Ἀφῆκας τὰς ἀνομίας τοῦ λαοῦ σου, καὶ τὸ ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου κηρυχθὲν, Ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου. Αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. Ἀμήν.
