I swallowed Jonah, but I shudder at this one; I tossed Noah about on the waves, but I do not dare to look upon the one who with his hands formed man. With his feet he hallowed the sea, with his throne he glorified heaven, with the manger he made the earth shine, through the tomb he enlightened Hades. I am not ungrateful and soulless; as an element I recognize the one who made me; I do not say with the Jews, This man is not from God; but I cry out piously, This is my God, and I will glorify him.

I will show the things of my nature, I will refute the opinions of the blood-guilty, I will make public the power of the one who walked upon me. These are fellow servants, he is the Lord, by fear of whom I trouble these. The Lord indeed walked on the sea without getting his feet wet, but those sailing were troubled; and fear caused those in danger to cry out, but the lover of mankind encouraged them to be of good courage, saying: Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. Take heart, you who have the anchor of faith; for the reef of idolatry did not sink you; take heart, a Jewish storm did not submerge you; take heart, a heretical tempest does not toss you about.

It is I, the co-eternal Word of the Father, the branch of the uncreated beginning, the lamb for the sin of the world, the pilot for the shipwreck of the cities, the treasure of the orthodox faith, the prize-giver of the martyrs' contests. It is I; do not be afraid. For where God is present, danger has been driven away by the grace of God; to him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
