upon children, and of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just. Say, O children, from whence comes to you this beautiful and graceful contest and song? who is the one who taught? who is the one who made you wise? who is the one who gathered you? where are the tablets? who are 59.705 the tutors? Share with us, he says, in the feasting and melody, and you will learn the things desired by Moses and the rest of the prophets. Since, therefore, we have been urged, and the children have given us the right hands of fellowship, come, beloved, let us too emulate the God-befitting dance, and with the apostles let us make a way for him who has mounted upon the heaven of heaven towards the east, and who rides upon a beast of burden, as he was pleased, upon the earth.
With the infants let us take up the branches, and with the branches let us clap, so that the Holy Spirit may breathe upon us also, and we may send up in an orderly manner the God-taught song, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. Today the patriarch Jacob celebrates in spirit, seeing his prophecy brought to fulfillment, and him who binds his colt to the vine, mounted upon a young colt; and with the faithful he worships in the spirit. Today a colt is prepared, the formerly irrational exemplar of the irrational nations, as a sign of the submission of the new people from the nations; and infants proclaim their infancy with respect to the knowledge of God. Today the king of glory is prophetically glorified on earth, and he shows the earth-born to be partakers of the heavenly feast; that he might show that he is Lord of both, as he is praised in harmony from both sides with the Father and the Spirit.
For this reason, those above, proclaiming salvation on earth, were singing, Holy, holy, holy, Lord of Sabaoth; the whole earth is full of his glory; while those below, celebrating together in heavenly joy, were crying out, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to the son of David. And some were giving glory, saying, Blessed be the glory of the Lord from his place; while others were speaking of God, saying, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
B. While these things were thus being accomplished, and the disciples were dancing because of all
the mighty works they had seen, and saying, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; glory in the highest, and on earth peace; the city was shaken, saying, Who is this? stirring up hardened envy against the glory of the Master. And hearing "city," recognize the ancient disorderly multitude of the synagogue. The ungrateful ask, Who is this? as if they had not yet seen the benefactor renowned for his God-befitting miracles. For the shadow did not comprehend the unsetting light that shone in it. Wherefore Isaiah aptly cried out beforehand to them, saying: You deaf, hear, and you blind, look up to see. And who is blind, but my children? and deaf, but they that rule over them? And the servants of God were blinded. You saw many times, and you did not observe; your ears were open, and you did not hear. Do you see, beloved, the precision of the words? how the foreseeing divine Spirit, through his holy ones, proclaimed future things as if they were present?
For the ungrateful saw, and through the miracles they touched the miracle-working God, and they remained in unbelief; they saw the one blind from birth proclaiming the Lord who gave him light; they saw a paralytic, coeval and conjoined with his infirmity, by a command separated from his affliction; they beheld Lazarus become a fugitive from death; they heard of the walking on the sea, the uncultivated wine-giving, the effortless feeding with bread, the driving out of demons, the health of the sick; their broad streets proclaimed the mighty works, their roads announced the healings to travelers; all of Judaea was filled with his benefactions, and now they ask, Who is this? O the folly of the falsely named teachers! O the disobedient fathers! O the foolish elders! O seed of Canaan of the

Πόλιν δὲ ἀκούων, τὴν παλαιὰν τῆς συναγωγῆς ἄτακτον πληθὺν ἐπιγίνωσκε. ∆ιερωτῶσιν οἱ ἀγνώμονες, Τίς ἐστιν οὗτος; ὡς μήπω ἑωρακότες τὸν εὐεργέτην καὶ περιβόητον τοῖς θεοπρε πέσι θαύμασιν. Οὐ γὰρ κατέλαβεν ἡ σκιὰ τὸ ἐν αὐτῇ ἐπιλάμψαν ἄδυτον φῶς. Ὅθεν εὐθυβόλως προανακέ κραγε πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἡσαΐας λέγων· Οἱ κωφοὶ, ἀκού σατε, καὶ οἱ τυφλοὶ, ἀναβλέψατε ἰδεῖν. Καὶ τίς τυ φλὸς, ἀλλ' ἢ οἱ παῖδές μου; καὶ κωφοὶ, ἀλλ' ἢ οἱ κυριεύοντες αὐτῶν; Καὶ ἐτυφλώθησαν οἱ δοῦλοι τοῦ Θεοῦ. Εἴδετε πολλάκις, καὶ οὐκ ἐφυλάξασθε· ἠνεῳγ μένα τὰ ὦτα, καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε. Ὁρᾶτε, ἀγαπητοὶ, ἀκρίβειαν λόγων; ὅπως τὸ προθεωρητικὸν θεῖον Πνεῦμα διὰ τῶν ἁγίων αὐτοῦ, ὡς παρόντα, τὰ μέλλοντα προεκήρυττεν;
