those who are disorderly, just as a physician will cry out to the disorderly: Having food and coverings, with these we shall be content. Food, not luxury; food, not the ruin that comes from drunkenness.
Luxury once stirred up Israel to an idolatrous dance; for drunkenness took the mind captive. For, it says, the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Let us therefore maintain sufficiency of need; let the body be healed by nourishment; seeking the consolation of relief, let us not be broken by the burden of gluttony; let us have control over measured eating; let us turn away from the indecency of drunkenness, and we will have no danger; let us obey the exhortation of Paul: Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Holy Spirit; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
