The throat indeed tastes food, but the mind discerns words, says the most wise one. Let us sing praises also to the Spirit who searches all things, even the unutterable depths of God, in the light of the Father, by the Spirit who enlightens all things, seeing as light the Son of God, the unapproachable. Now was seen what is invisible to human eyes, an earthly body radiating divine splendor, a mortal body, gushing forth the glory of divinity. For the Word became flesh, and the flesh became the Word, although He did not depart from the divine nature. O wonder surpassing all understanding! The glory was not added to the body from without, but from within, from the super-divine divinity of God the Word united to it hypostatically in an ineffable manner. How are the unmixable things mixed, and remain unconfused? How do incompatible things come together into one, and not depart from the proper principles of their nature? This is the work of the hypostatic union. The united things are one, and bring about one hypostasis, in an indivisible difference, and unconfused union, the unity of the hypostasis being preserved, and the duality of the natures being maintained, both through the immutable incarnation of the Word, and the unchangeable deification, beyond understanding, of the mortal flesh. And the human things 96.549 become God's, and the divine things become man's, by the mode of communication of properties, and of the unconfused perichoresis in one another, and of the perfect hypostatic union. For He is one, who is both that eternally, and became this later. 3. Today is heard by the ears of men the unheard-of. For the man who is seen, the Son of God, is testified as only-begotten, beloved, and consubstantial. The testimony is without falsehood; the proclamation is true; the Father who begot Him Himself cries out the proclamation. Let David be present, and strike the divinely-inspired lyre of the Spirit, and now let him sing more clearly and more distinctly the saying, which long ago he prophesied as something that would be, foreseeing from afar with prophetic and pure eyes the incarnate coming to us of God the Word: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. Hermon, for its part, rejoiced before, having heard the name of sonship clearly testified by the Father for Christ, when just then the forerunner went forth to the Jordan to baptize, as a mediator of the old and the new, sent to make public the treasure hidden in the desert shining as in darkness to the world, the unapproachable light, hidden from the shortsighted, when in the midst of the Jordan the water of remission stood, cleansing the world, not itself being cleansed; when indeed with the Father's voice thundering from heaven, the one being baptized is testified as beloved Son; and like a dove, by the Spirit, the one testified is pointed out. But now Tabor exults and rejoices, the divine and holy mountain, the lofty, not less in glory and splendor than in its airy height now worthily rejoices. For it rivals heaven in grace. For He on whom in that place the angels are not able to fix their gaze steadfastly, on this place the chief of the apostles see Him shining forth in the glory of His kingdom; on this place the resurrection of the dead is confirmed, and He is shown to be Lord of the dead and of the living, having summoned Moses from the dead, and bringing forward Elijah as a living witness, who long ago from the earth drove a fire-breathing chariot on an ethereal path. On this place also now the chief of prophets prophesy, announcing the exodus of the Master through the cross. Wherefore it leaps and rejoices, and imitates the leaps of lambs, having heard from the cloud, the Spirit, the same testimony of sonship, concerning the life-giving Christ being testified by the Father. For this is the name which is above every name, in which Tabor and Hermon rejoice. This is my beloved Son. This is the exultation of all creation; this is a prize for men, and an inalienable boast. Ψάλλωμεν καὶ τῷ Πνεύματι τῷ ἐρευνῶντι τὰ πάντα, καὶ αὐτὰ τὰ βάθη τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ ἀπόῤῥητα, ἐν τῷ φωτὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς, τῷ τὰ πάντα φωτίζοντι Πνεύματι, φῶς ὁρῶντες τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ, τὸ ἀπρόσιτον. Νῦν ὡράθη τὰ τοῖς ἀνθρωπίνοις ἀθέατα ὄμμασι, σῶμα γήϊνον θείαν ἀπαυγάζον λαμπρότητα, σῶμα θνητὸν, δόξαν πηγάζον θεότητος. Ὁ γὰρ Λόγος σὰρξ, ἡ σάρξ τε Λόγος ἐγένετο, εἰ καὶ μὴ θείας ἐξειστήκει φύσεως. Πῶς τὰ ἄμικτα μίγνυται, καὶ μένει ἀσύγχυτα; Πῶς συμβαίνει εἰς ἓν τὰ ἀσύμβατα, καὶ τῶν οἰκείων οὐκ ἐκβαίνει λόγων τῆς φύσεως; Ἑνώσεως τοῦτο τὸ δράμα τῆς καθ' ὑπόστασιν. Ἓν τὰ ἡνωμένα, καὶ μίαν ὑπόστασιν ἀπεργάζεται, ἐν ἀδιαιρέτῳ διαφορᾷ, καὶ ἀσυγχύτῳ ἑνώσει τῆς ἑνότητος φυλαττομένης τῆς ὑποστάσεως, καὶ τῆς δυάδος τηρουμένης τῶν φύσεων, διά τε τῆς τοῦ Λόγου ἀμεταβλήτου σαρκώσεως, καὶ τῆς ὑπὲρ νοῦν τῆς βροτείας σαρκὸς ἀτρέπτου θεώσεως. Νῦν δὲ Θαβὼρ ἀγαλλιᾶται καὶ γήθεται, τὸ θεῖον ὄρος καὶ ἅγιον, τὸ ὑψηλὸν, οὐχ ἧττον τῇ δόξῃ τε καὶ λαμπρότητι, ἢ τῷ ἀερίῳ μετεωρίσματι νῦν ἐπαξίως εὐφραίνεται. Οὐρανῷ γὰρ ἁμιλλᾶται τῇ χάριτι. Ὧ γὰρ ἐν ἐκείνῳ οἱ ἄγγελοι ἀκλινὲς ἐνερείδειν τὸ ὄμμα μὴ σθένουσιν, ἐν τούτῳ ἀποστόλων οἱ πρόκριτοι τῇ δόξῃ τῆς αὐτοῦ βασιλείας ὁρῶσιν ἐκλάμποντα· ἐν τούτῳ νεκρῶν πιστοῦται ἀνάστασις, καὶ νεκρῶν, καὶ ζώντων ἀναδείκνυται Κύριος, ἐκ νεκρῶν μὲν τὸν Μωϋσῆν προηκάμενος, ζῶντα δὲ τὸν Ἠλίαν προσαγόμενος μάρτυρα, τὸν πάλαι ἐκ γῆς ἁρματηλάτην πυρίπνοον πρὸς αἰθέριον τρίβον διφρηλατήσαντα. Ἐν τούτῳ καὶ νῦν προφητῶν οἱ ἔξαρχοι προφητεύουσι, διὰ σταυροῦ τὴν ἔξοδον τοῦ ∆εσπότου μηνύοντες. Ὅθεν σκιρτᾷ, καὶ ἀγάλλεται, καὶ ἀρνῶν μιμεῖται τὰ ἅλματα, μαρτυρίαν τὴν αὐτὴν τῆς υἱότητος ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης, τοῦ Πνεύματος, τὴν ζωοδότην Χριστὸν ἀκουτισθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρὸς μαρτυρούμενον. Τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα, ἐφ' ᾧ Θαβὼρ καὶ Ἑρμὼν ἀγάλλεται. Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός. Τοῦτο πάσης τῆς κτίσεως ἀγαλλίαμα· τοῦτο γέρας ἀνθρώποις, καὶ ἀναφαίρετον καύχημα.
