are possible with the God who has promised; for the passions of sin later came upon the soul and the body because of the transgression of the first-formed Adam; and to be counted worthy of the spirit of adoption perfectly and completely for the sanctification of soul and body in all full assurance, according to the one who said that Our gospel came not unto us in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance, as you know; and again May your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; 236 of which we who have believed received the pledge of the ineffable benefit at the holy baptism of the blessed Trinity, for the increase and advancement of the perfect inheritance and for the multiplication of the talent, having been entrusted with this great and undefiled mystery. For the divine and paraclete spirit that was given to the apostles and through them ministered to the one and true church of God from the hour of baptism according to the proportion of faith is in different and various ways with each one who has approached baptism out of sincere faith; however, for multiplication and cultivation and increase each receives the mina, as it is said in the gospel. For just as the infant born in this age does not always remain at the age of infancy, but day by day receives increase by a certain sequence of necessity according to the ineffable laws of nature, until it reaches a perfect man and the completion of rational thoughts, in the same way also he who is born from above of water and spirit ought not to remain in the infantile state of spiritual age, but day by day, using struggle and toil and much patience because of the fight against the antagonist, he must advance and increase to the completion of spiritual age according to what was said by the apostle: Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to 237 the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into him who is Christ; and again elsewhere the same one says: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect, saying that those who have come to the measure of the stature and rational completion of the spirit reach the perfect will of God. But in the case of physical birth, by a certain sequence of necessity and by a law of nature the born child arrives at the age of manhood, providence having thus ordained by a limit of necessity and not by choice of will that the physical age be completed. But in the case of the birth from above from the Spirit He did not appoint this sequence, but placed toil and struggle and a race with much patience upon the free choice of man, according to what was said by the Lord: Strive to enter through the narrow door; and again: Be violent, for the violent take the kingdom of heaven by force, and He who endures to the end will be saved; and By your patience possess your souls; and the apostle, Let us run with patience the race that is set before us; and So, he says, run that you may obtain; and again As ministers of God in much patience and the rest. 238 Thus has the divine grace ordained, that by one's own mind and one's own will and toil and struggle each might attain the intelligible increase, according as he believes and according as he strives; and according as he loves and according as with bodily and spiritual struggle into
