"In her humiliation they will find her." Because of being attached to them. "I will act bravely." I am sufficient for my own help, I do not need God, or it says this, that against what she was admonished, she grew bold in disobedience. "Have I become a wilderness to Israel?" Did I not give them, he says, all things for life and benefit? "What good will you still practice in your ways to seek love?" A soul departing from the true God, not enduring to be godless, makes for itself gods that are not, thereby preparing consolation for itself. Not so, then, he says, that is, it is not possible for there to be consolation for the soul from the falsely named gods. "I did not find them in ditches, but upon every oak tree." Not even in secret, he says, but on a high place, that is, they sin openly. "And you said, I am innocent." It is necessary to confess sins, and you shamelessly deny them? "Behold, I enter into judgment with you because you say, I have not sinned." If through another prophet he commands to speak one's sins, that one may be justified, for one says [resolves] the fault through confession, it is again absurd for one to say: I am innocent, let his wrath turn away from me; for he adds, Behold, I enter into judgment with you, because you say, I have not sinned; everywhere one who has erred must heal the sin by confession. "Because you scorned to repeat your ways." Thus you held it in contempt, and fearlessly you do evil things, so as to add others to the ones that came before. "Your hands upon your head." This is a posture of mourning. CHAP. III. "And you have played the harlot with many shepherds." Either false teachers, or also the unclean demons, [he says]. "Did you not call me as a home, and a father, and a guide." Even if you, he says, did not call upon me, a shelter, and father, and guide of your virginity, yet I will not allow the evils to remain, either saving you by grace, or by chastisements. "And I said after she had committed all these fornications, Return to me; and she did not return." He calls treacherous the one who is irregular and discordant with herself, because while honoring God with her lips, she was false in her heart, or also the one who broke her covenants with God, or also the one who is unstable, and not abiding in the same things. I annulled my just claims against her, having handed her over to the Babylonians. "Go, and read these words toward the North." Because their hearts were grown cold, and did not have spiritual warmth; for the North is a cold wind. "And I will not set my face against us." I will not persistently use my wrath against us. "And I will take you one from a city, and two from a family." Man is composed of two things, of soul, and body; when therefore he preserves the property of the soul, and has not become entirely flesh, the one is understood as two; but when having turned aside completely to wicked things, he becomes entirely carnal, he is rightly called one. At any rate, he says that I call to salvation through grace both those who have sinned completely, and those who have not yet suffered this; or thus: One from a city was called, Paul from the tribe of Benjamin, and two from a family, the apostles who were called in pairs. "And I will bring you to Zion." To Zion, the Church. "I will give you shepherds." The leaders of the Churches. "They shall call Jerusalem, the throne of the Lord." Because the Holy Spirit rests in the Church; and in these sayings he alludes also to the Jerusalem above. "I will place you among the children." Either the adoption is promised [alt. is announced] to the prophet, or also to all the people who are being saved. "Return, O returning sons." You who are about to return. "Truly the hills were for a lie." The divinations on the mountains, or also the mass of sin. "Their sheep." Sheep, those things for which they were inwardly disposed. "We have slept in our shame." He calls sleep rest; Thinking, therefore, he says, to rest in the works of sin, we were filled with shame. CHAP. IV. "If Israel does not return." If he does not repent with his whole heart. "And you shall swear."

κακίας ὁδοί· ἐνεργειῶν ἐπληροῦντο πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων. Προαιρετικῶς αὐτὴν ἐπιδοῦσα. Τὸν γὰρ μὴ βουλόμενον θεραπευθῆναι, οὐδεὶς ἰάσεται. "Ἐν τῇ ταπεινώσει αὐτῆς εὑρήσουσιν αὐτήν." ∆ιὰ τὸ προσκεῖσθαι αὐτοῖς. "Ἀνδριοῦμαι." Ἐμαυτῇ ἀρκῶ εἰς βοήθειαν, οὐ δέομαι τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἢ τοῦτο λέγει, ὅτι πρὸς ὃ ἐνουθετεῖτο, ἠνδρίζετο εἰς τὴν παρακοήν. "Μὴ ἔρημος ἐγενήθην τῷ Ἰσραήλ;" Μὴ οὐκ ἐδωρησάμην αὐτοῖς, φησὶ, πάντα τὰ πρὸς ζωὴν καὶ ὠφέλειαν. "Τί ἔτι καλὸν ἐπιτηδεύσεις ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς σου τοῦ ζητῆσαι ἀγάπησιν;" Ψυχὴ ἀφισταμένη ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀληθινοῦ Θεοῦ, οὐκ ἀνεχομένη εἶναι ἄθεος, θεοὺς ἑαυτῇ τοὺς μὴ ὄντας περιποιεῖται, ἐντεῦθεν ἑαυτῇ παράκλησιν περιποιουμένη. Οὐχ οὕτως οὖν, φησὶ, τουτέστιν οὐ δυνατὸν εἶναι ἐκ τῶν ψευδωνύμων θεῶν τῇ ψυχῇ παράκλησιν. "Οὐκ ἐν διορύγμασιν εὗρον αὐτοὺς, ἀλλ' ἐπὶ πάσῃ δρυΐ." Οὐδὲ λάθρα, φησὶν, ἀλλ' ἐφ' ὑψηλοῦ, τουτέστιν, φανερῶς ἁμαρτάνουσιν. "Καὶ εἶπας, Ἀθῶός εἰμι." ∆έον ἐξομολογεῖσθαι τὰς ἁμαρτίας, καὶ ἀναισχυντεῖς ταύτας ἀρνούμενος; "Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ κρίνομαι πρὸς σὲ ἐν τῷ λέγειν σε, Οὐχ ἥμαρτον." Εἰ δι' ἄλλου προφήτου προστάττει λέγειν τὰς ἁμαρτίας, ἵνα δικαιωθῇ τις, λέγει [λύει] γάρ τις διὰ τῆς ἐξομολογήσεως τὸ πταῖσμα, ἄτοπος πά 93.633 λιν ὁ λέγων· Ἀθῶός εἰμι, ἀποστραφήτω αὐτοῦ ὁ θυμὸς ἀπ' ἐμοῦ· ἐπάγει γὰρ τὸ, Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ κρίνομαι πρὸς σὲ, ἐν τῷ λέγειν σε, Οὐχ ἥμαρτον· πανταχοῦ δεῖ τὸν πταίσαντα θεραπεύειν τῇ ἐξομολογήσει τὸ ἁμάρτημα. "Ὅτι κατεφρόνησας τοῦ δευτερῶσαι τὰς ὁδούς σου." Οὕτως ἐν καταφρονήσει ἔσχες, καὶ ἀφόβως πράττεις τὰ κακὰ, ὡς καὶ τοῖς φθάσασι ἕτερα προστιθέναι. "Αἱ χεῖρές σου ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς σου." Σχῆμα τοῦτο πενθικόν. ΚΕΦΑΛ. Γʹ. "Καὶ σὺ ἐξεπόρνευσας ἐν ποιμέσι πολλοῖς." Ἢ ψευδοδιδασκάλοις, ἢ καὶ τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις δαίμοσιν, [λέγει]. "Οὐχ ὡς οἶκόν με ἐκάλεσας, καὶ πατέρα, καὶ ἀρχηγόν." Εἰ καὶ σὺ, φησὶ, μὴ ἐπεκαλέσω με, σκέπην, καὶ πατέρα, καὶ ἀρχηγὸν τῆς παρθενίας σου, ἀλλ' ἐγὼ οὐκ ἐάσω διαμεῖναι τὰ κακὰ, ἢ χάριτί σε σώζων, ἢ σωφρονισμοῖς. Ἔλυσα τὰ πρὸς αὐτὴν δίκαια, παραδοὺς τοῖς Βαβυλωνίοις. "Πορεύου, καὶ ἀνάγνωθι τοὺς λόγους τούτους πρὸς Βοῤῥᾶν." ∆ιὰ τὸ κατεψύχθαι αὐτῶν τὰς καρδίας, καὶ μὴ ἔχειν θέρμην πνευματικήν· ὁ γὰρ Βοῤῥᾶς ψυχρὸς ἄνεμος. "Καὶ οὐ μὴ στηρίξω πρόσωπόν μου ἐφ' ἡμᾶς." Οὐκ ἐπιμόνως χρήσομαι τῇ καθ' ἡμῶν ὀργῇ. "Καὶ λήψομαι ὑμᾶς ἕνα ἐκ πόλεως, καὶ δύο ἐκ πατριᾶς." Ἐκ δύο σύγκειται ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ἐκ ψυχῆς, καὶ σώματος· ὅταν οὖν σώζῃ τὸ τῆς ψυχῆς ἰδίωμα, καὶ μὴ ὁλοτρόπως γέγονε σὰρξ, ὁ εἷς δύο νοεῖται· ὅταν δὲ ὁλοσχερῶς ἀποκλίνας εἰς τὰ πονηρὰ, ὅλος γένηται σάρκινος, δικαίως εἷς λέγεται. Φησὶ γοῦν ὅτι Καὶ τοὺς ὁλοτρόπως ἁμαρτήσαντας, καὶ τοὺς μήπω τοῦτο πεπονθότας διὰ τῆς χάριτος εἰς σωτηρίαν καλῶ· ἢ οὕτως· Εἷς ἐκ πόλεως ἐκλήθη, ὁ Παῦλος ἐκ τῆς Βενιαμεὶν φυλῆς, δύο δὲ ἐκ πατριᾶς, οἱ κατὰ συζυγίαν κληθέντες ἀπόστολοι. "Καὶ εἰσάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς Σιών." Εἰς Σιὼν, τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν. "∆ώσω ὑμῖν ποιμένας." Τοὺς τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν ἡγουμένους. "Καλέσουσι τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, θρόνον Κυρίου." ∆ιὰ τὸ ἐπαναπαύεσθαι ἐν τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ τὸ ἅγιον Πνεῦμα· αἰνίττεται δὲ ἐν τούτοις τοῖς ῥητοῖς, καὶ τὴν ἄνω Ἱερουσαλήμ. "Τάξω σε εἰς τέκνα." Ἢ τῷ προφήτῃ τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἐπήγγελται [ἄλ. ἀπαγγέλλεται], ἢ καὶ παντὶ τῷ σωζομένῳ λαῷ. "Υἱοὶ ἐπιστράφητε ἐπιστρέφοντες." Οἲ μέλλετε πρὸς ἐπιστροφήν. 93.636 "Ὄντως εἰς ψεῦδος ἦσαν οἱ βουνοί." Αἱ ἐν τοῖς ὅρεσι μαντεῖαι, ἢ καὶ ὁ ὄγκος τῆς ἁμαρτίας. "Τὰ πρόβατα αὐτῶν." Πρόβατα, ἐκεῖνα περὶ ἂ ἐνδιαθέτως εἶχον. "Ἐκοιμήθημεν ἐν τῇ αἰσχύνῃ ἡμῶν." Κοίμησιν τὴν ἀνάπαυσιν λέγει· ∆οκοῦντες οὖν, φησὶν, ἀναπαύεσθαι ἐπὶ τοῖς τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἔργοις, αἰσχύνης ἐπληρούμεθα. ΚΕΦΑΛ. ∆ʹ. "Ἐὰν μὴ ἐπιστραφῇ Ἰσραήλ." Ἐὰν ἐπὶ ὅληςκαρδίας μὴ μετανοήσῃ. "Καὶ ὀμόσῃ."
