"of the living," as God said, "I will dwell in them and walk among them, and I will be their 227 God, and they will be my people." "Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate, and touch no unclean thing; and I will receive you, and I will be a father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty." -"For I am the Lord your God, a jealous God." No man is jealous over a prostitute, but over a wedded wife; for the one is available to all, but the other belongs only to her husband, over whom he is also jealous. "For the rage of a man is full of jealousy," according to Solomon. So it is with a soul that has one Word, one bridegroom; but 228.20 with a prostitute, one demon has departed, and another has entered in its place, and there is not one who is jealous. Hence the laws of the nations commanded that every idol be honored. But the bridegroom, a fine and jealous one, even if he ever takes a prostitute, wishes to make her chaste. This is why Hosea, having taken a prostitute, said: "For many days you shall stay with me; you shall not play the harlot, nor shall you belong to another man, and I also will be for you." God also made a great supper for the wedding of his son. And he is "a jealous God," not permitting another to have communion with the soul, but at the time of her prostitution giving a "bill of divorce," according to the law that contains pretextual words; which Christ, like the Pharisees according to the letter, brought forth according to Paul who says: "To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews." And he clarifies this, saying: "And this is the bill of divorce of your 229 mother, with which I sent her away. Behold, for your sins you were sold, and for your iniquities I sent your mother away." But if she who plays the harlot returns, he says concerning her whom "God has cleansed," "You must not call common." He therefore holds fast to every soul, but when she leaves the church, she herself rather gives the bridegroom a "bill of divorce"; and to her he says, "you have played the harlot with many shepherds, and have you returned to me, says the Lord." But she who repents must be received; but if anyone has communion with one who is still a prostitute, let him see that "he who is joined to a prostitute is one body." But God is no longer jealous over her who plays the harlot; for he says in Ezekiel to Jerusalem: "Therefore my jealousy will depart 230 from you, and I will not be angry with you." These things are of God's goodness; being merciful, he is angry and strikes; but with mercy, his anger also ceases.
