of most, both their family and city and the place of their monastery. And we have made mention of men and women who had indeed achieved virtue to the highest point, but on account of the mother of pride, called vainglory, were cast down into the furthest abyss and the bottom of Hades, and the lovely and highly prized achievements of their ascetic practice, acquired by them over long years and with many labors, having flowed away in the twinkling of an eye through conceit and arrogance; but by the grace of our Savior and the providence of the holy fathers and the compassion of spiritual hearts having been snatched from the nets of the devil and by the prayers of the saints recovered their former virtuous life.
πλείστων καὶ τὸ γένος καὶ τὴν πόλιν καὶ τὸν τόπον τῆς μονῆς. Ἐμνημονεύσαμεν δὲ ἀνδρῶν καὶ γυναικῶν κατορθωσάντων μὲν εἰς ἄκρον τὴν ἀρετὴν, διὰ δὲ τὴν μητέρα τῆς ὑπερηφανείας τὴν καλουμένην κενοδοξίαν εἰς ἔσχατον βάραθρον καὶ πυθμένα ᾅδου κατενεχθέντων, καὶ τὰ ἐκ μακρῶν χρόνων καὶ πολλῶν κόπων κτηθέντα αὐτοῖς ἐπέραστα καὶ περιμάχητα τῆς ἀσκήσεως κατορθώματα ἐν μιᾷ καιροῦ ῥοπῇ ὑπὸ τοῦ τύφου καὶ τῆς οἰήσεως διαρρυέντα· χάριτι δὲ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν καὶ προνοίᾳ τῶν ἁγίων πατέρων καὶ συμπαθείᾳ σπλάγχνων πνευματικῶν ἐξαρπασθέντων τῶν τοῦ διαβόλου δικτύων καὶ ταῖς εὐχαῖς τῶν ἁγίων τὸν πρότερον ἀνακτησαμένων ἐνάρετον βίον.
