Therefore, with their opinion being divided, suddenly a great earthquake occurred around them and them alone; and a deep gloom took hold around about the third hour of the day; and there was helpless amazement. But not even so were the thrice-wicked men willing to take notice, nor did they rise up, that in fact the divinity, being angry and displeased at the things about which they were wickedly and impiously plotting, was scourging the inanimate earth, by the blow against it refuting and overthrowing their audacity and madness, even if they did not thus choose to be sober-minded. For the fact that the event happened to none of the others, but encompassed only those whom the practice of blasphemy possessed, how does it not provide clear proof of the divine wrath stirred up against them? Alas for the hardening of Satan by which the entire assembly of the heretics was held fast. 2.2aebd. Folge But Arius, having been expelled from the most pious council and being shut out from everywhere by the orthodox and not having any way to still converse with the crowds and teach concerning the matters at hand, turned to writing, composing some psalms as he was able, and songs for sailors and for the mill, and such as those who drive donkeys on journeys are accustomed to use. S. 13, 31: But Crispus, the eldest of Constantine's sons, born to him from the daughter of Maxentius, ruling under his father (for he had the rank of Caesar) and displaying brilliant deeds against the enemy, in the very flower of his youth, in the following year after the synod that took place in Nicaea, to put it briefly, died suddenly. But those full of heresy and impiety say that he met the end of his life from his father, whose accounts, since they are exceedingly false, it would indeed have been right to omit; but since I have undertaken with all diligence to record all the opinions formerly reported, it is good to add this one also to the present account, not so much for credence as for a refutation of those who choose to speak falsehoods. For they say that his stepmother Fausta provided the cause of the murder for Crispus through erotic madness. For she, having fallen in love with the young man and now being overcome by her passion, at first wheedled him with various words, leading him into conversation; but since he was altogether averse, not even enduring the mere mention, and it was clear that he would in no way be persuaded, then the woman, now inflamed by her desires and not knowing what to do with herself, proceeded to plot against the one she desired, having turned her love-potion into hatred. For being enraged by the unfulfillment of her desire, she made the cure for her passion the slaughter of the one no longer desired, being eager to sate her desire with murder. And she persuades her own husband to kill his own child, having made her own sickness his, and having brought all sorts of false accusations against him. But he, at what he heard from his own wife, his reason being overcome by anger, and being unwilling to put off anything for an examination of the matter, becomes a Theseus to his child, and in the very way that that man, by the slander of Phaedra, killed Hippolytus, who was born to him from Hippolyta the Amazon, in this way also this man slaughtered Crispus by the false accusation of his own
