has been revealed. How, and in what manner? For this is the question. Wait a little, beloved, and you shall receive the solution to your longing.

4. When man was about to be brought from non-existence into being through the infinite goodness of God, first heaven is stretched out, the earth is spread beneath, the sea is bounded, and whatever complements both, is at once contained in the whole arrangement. Then after96.684ward man is royally placed in paradise as a training-ground for virtue; but if the transgression had not occurred, he would not have been exiled from the life-giving place. And being stripped of his garment, if he had not been sustained by divine providence, he would not have been brought down into the most passible alteration, revering polytheism instead of God the monarch. For these reasons, to speak in summary, when all things were held by corruption, and God pitied the work of His own hands lest it proceed to complete non-existence, the creation of another new heaven, and earth, and sea, in which the uncontainable One is pleased to be contained for the re-creation of the race. And these are the blessed and much-hymned Virgin. Oh, the wonder! A heaven, as from innermost treasures, causing the Sun of righteousness to rise; an earth, as from the undefiled womb of incorruption, bringing forth the ear of corn of life; a sea, as from its abdominal depths, bringing forth the spiritual pearl. Therefore now the newly-appeared creation of the uncontainable One was brought forth. The royal court of the King of all was prepared. The rational dwelling-place of the incomprehensible was made ready. How magnificent is this world! how worthy of admiration the creation, beautifying with plants of virtues, fragrant with flowers of purity, radiant with the splendors of contemplation, abounding unsparingly with all other bountiful goods, worthy, as it is said, for the indwelling of God among men! And yet the former world was also most wonderful; for when, he says, the stars were born, all my angels praised me with a great voice, and sang hymns. But not yet was there anything so befitting God as this blessed and all-wonderful Virgin. And that this is true, listen to much-suffering Job saying: Heaven is not pure, and the stars are not blameless before him. But what is purer than she? What more blameless? whom God, the highest and purest light, so loved, that through the coming of the Holy Spirit He was substantially united to her, and came forth from her a perfect man, with the unchangeable and unconfused establishment of His own properties. Oh, the wonder! The most philanthropic One was not ashamed to acquire His own handmaid as a mother. Oh, the condescension! The exceedingly good One did not refuse to be called the offspring of His own creature, having loved her who was more beautiful than all creation, having chosen her who was more worthy than the heavenly powers. Concerning her, therefore, the most wonderful Zechariah says, Rejoice, and be glad, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I am coming, and I will dwell in your midst, says the Lord. Concerning her also the most blessed Joel, as it seems to me, appears to cry out thus: Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things for you. For she is the land on which the most holy Moses was commanded to loose the sandal of the shadowy law for the exchange of grace. She is the land on which He who establishes the earth on its firm foundation is sung to have been founded in the flesh by the Spir96.685it. She is the land that does not receive seed, yet bears as fruit the provider of nourishment for all. She is the land on which the thorn of sin did not spring up. But rather, on the contrary, through her offspring it has been plucked out by the roots. She is the land, not like the former one that was cursed, and whose fruits are full of thorns and thistles; but on which is the blessing of the Lord, and of which the fruit of the womb is blessed, as the sacred word says.

Καίτοι γε καὶ ὁ πρὶν κόσμος, θαυμαστὸς ὅτι μάλιστα· ὅτε γὰρ, φησὶν, ἐγενήθησαν ἄστρα, ᾔνεσάν με φωνῇ μεγάλῃ πάντες ἄγγελοί μου, καὶ ὕμνησαν. Τῆς δὲ τί καθαρώτερον; τί δὲ ἀμεμπτότερον; ἧς τοσοῦτον ἠράσθη Θεὸς, τὸ ἀκρότατον φῶς καὶ καθαρώτατον, ὡς δι' ἐπελεύσεως ἁγίου Πνεύματος οὐσιωδῶς αὐτῇ συγκραθῆναι, καὶ ἐξ αὐτῆς προελθεῖν τέλειος ἄνθρωπος, μετὰ τῆς ἀμεταβόλου καὶ ἀσυγχύτου τῶν οἰκείων ἱδρύσεως. Ὢ τοῦ θαύματος! Τὴν ἰδίαν δούλην, μητέρα κτήσασθαι οὐκ ἐπῃσχύνθη ὁ φιλανθρωπότατος. Ὢ τῆς συγκαταβάσεως! Τοῦ ἰδίου πλάσματος γέννημα χρηματίσαι οὐκ ἀπῃνήνατο ὁ ὑπεράγαθος, ἐκείνης ἐρασθεὶς δηλαδὴ τῆς ὡραιοτέρας πάσης κτίσεως, ἐκείνης ἐπιλαβόμενος τῆς ἀξιωτέρας τῶν οὐρανίων δυνάμεων. Περὶ ταύτης τοίνυν ὁ Ζαχαρίας ὁ θαυμασιώτατος, Τέρπου, φησὶ, καὶ εὐφραίνου, θύγατερ Σιὼν, διότι ἰδοὺ ἔρχομαι, καὶ κατασκηνώσω ἐν μέσῳ σου, λέγει Κύριος. Περὶ ταύτης γε καὶ Ἰωὴλ ὁ μακαριώτατος, ὡς ἐμοὶ δοκεῖ, ὧδέ πως κεκραγὼς φαίνεται· Θάρσει, γῆ, χαῖρε καὶ εὐφραίνου, ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνε Κύριος τοῦ ποιῆσαί σοι. Γῆ γάρ ἐστιν, ἐφ' ᾗ Μωϋσῆς ὁ ἱερώτατος λῦσαι τὸ ὑπόδημα τοῦ σκιώδους νόμου εἰς ἐξαλλαγὴν χάριτος προσετάττετο. Γῆ ἐστιν, ἐφ' ᾗ τεθεμελιῶσθαι τῇ σαρκὶ ὑπὸ τοῦ Πνεύ96.685 ματος ᾄδεται, ὁ θεμελιῶν τὴν γῆν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀσφάλειαν αὐτῆς. Γῆ ἐστιν, ἡ σπορᾶς ἀνεπίδεκτος, καὶ ἁπάντων καρποτροφοῦσα τροφοδότην. Γῆ ἐστιν, οὐχ ὡς ἡ πρότερον κατηραμένη, καὶ ἧς καρποὶ πλήρεις ἀκανθῶν καὶ τριβόλων· ἀλλ' ἐφ' ἣν εὐλογία Κυρίου, καὶ ἧς εὐλογημένος ὁ καρπὸς τῆς κοιλίας, ὥς φησιν ὁ ἱερὸς λόγος.
