one ought to do this with understanding. γʹ The one who has once renounced possessions, and has promised to have nothing of his own, with what mind ought he to use the necessities for living, such as clothing and food. δʹ Concerning one who has left behind tributes, and has approached the brotherhood. εʹ Whether it is profitable for those who have just come to immediately learn by heart the things from the Scriptures. ʹ Whether one must permit everyone who wishes to learn letters, or to pay attention to readings. ζʹ If someone says that, I wish to be benefited among you for a short time, whether he should be received. ηʹ What sort of mindset the one who presides ought to have, in the things he commands, or ordains. θʹ With what disposition must the one who rebukes rebuke. ρʹ How shall we send away those who come from outside and beg. ραʹ Concerning the one entrusted with the stewardship, and concerning those who beg. ρβʹ Concerning one who departs from a brotherhood, for whatever reason. ργʹ Since it happens that even the elder himself slips in some way, whether it would be necessary for him to be reproved. 31.1061 ρδʹ How one ought to entrust responsibilities to the brothers. ρεʹ Whether those entering a brotherhood ought immediately to learn trades. ρʹ What penances one ought to use in a brotherhood. ρζʹ Concerning one who says he has a desire to live with the brotherhood. ρηʹ Whether the superior ought, without the superioress, to speak to any sister things for the building up of faith. ρθʹ Whether the superior ought to converse frequently with the superioress. ριʹ Whether, when a sister is confessing to the elder, the eldress should also be present. ριαʹ Whether, if the elder has commanded something to be done among the sisters without the knowledge of the eldress, the eldress is reasonably indignant. ριβʹ If someone approaches the life according to God, whether it is proper for the superior to receive such a one without the consent of the brothers. ριγʹ Whether one who is entrusted with the care of souls is able to keep the saying, Unless you turn, and become as children. ριδʹ Whether one must obey everyone who commands and of whatsoever sort. ριεʹ How it is necessary to obey one another. ριʹ To what extent is it necessary to obey. ριζʹ The one who is not fully convinced in the daily commands for the proposed commandment, but seeks to learn a trade, from what passion does he suffer, and whether one ought to bear with him. ριηʹ The one who is zealous for the commandment, yet does not what is commanded but what he himself wishes, what reward does he have. ριθʹ Whether it is permitted for each one to refuse the work entrusted to him, and to seek another. ρκʹ Whether one must go somewhere without the permission of the superior. ρκαʹ Whether it is permitted to refuse the heavier tasks. ρκβʹ If someone, having been rebuked not to receive a blessing, says that, If I do not receive a blessing, I will not eat; whether one ought to bear with him. ρκγʹ If someone is grieved at not being permitted to do what he is not able to do suitably, whether one ought to bear with him. ρκδʹ Whether one, having been found somewhere with heretics or with Greeks, must eat with them, or greet them. ρκεʹ Regarding one entrusted with a work, who does something without permission contrary to what was assigned to him, whether he ought to have the work. ρκʹ How one might not be overcome by the love of pleasure in foods. 31.1064 ρκζʹ Some say, that it is impossible for a man not to be angry. ρκηʹ For one wishing to practice self-control beyond his power, so as to be hindered even in the proposed commandment, whether one must allow it. ρκθʹ Concerning one who fasts much, but at mealtime is unable to endure the food. ρλʹ How one ought to fast, when there is need of fasting. ρλαʹ The one who does not partake from where the brothers eat, but seeks another, whether he does well. ρλβʹ The one who says that, This harms me, and is grieved if another is not given, what is he. ρλγʹ And if he also grumbles on account of food. ρλδʹ And if, being angry, he also refuses to take things for his need. ρλεʹ Whether one who is sick ought himself to seek something more than is customary. ρλʹ Whether it is necessary for all to gather at the hour of the midday meal, and the one who is absent, and comes after the midday meal, how shall we pass over him. ρλζʹ Whether it is good to decide for so long a time, as it may be, to abstain from a certain food or drink. ρληʹ Whether it is necessary in a brotherhood for someone more than the

διανοούμενον χρὴ τοῦτο ποιεῖν. γʹ Τὸν ἅπαξ ἀποκτησάμενον, καὶ ἴδιον μηδὲν ἔχειν ἐπαγγειλάμενον, ποίᾳ διανοίᾳ κεχρῆσθαι δεῖ τοῖς πρὸς τὸ ζῇν ἀναγκαίοις, οἷον ἐσθῆτι καὶ τροφῇ. δʹ Περὶ τοῦ καταλιπόντος φόρους, καὶ ἀδελφότητι προσελθόντος. εʹ Εἰ συμφέρει τοῖς ἄρτι προσερχομένοις εὐθὺς τὰ ἀπὸ τῶν Γραφῶν ἐκμανθάνειν. ʹ Εἰ δεῖ παντὶ τῷ βουλομένῳ ἐπιτρέπειν γράμ ματα μανθάνειν, ἢ ἀναγνώσμασι προσέχειν. ζʹ Ἐὰν λέγῃ τις ὅτι, Θέλω παρ' ὑμῖν ὀλίγον χρό νον ὠφεληθῆναι, εἰ δεῖ αὐτὸν προσδέχεσθαι. ηʹ Ποταπὸν φρόνημα ὀφείλει ἔχειν ὁ προεστὼς, ἐν οἷς ἐπιτάσσει, ἢ διατάσσεται. θʹ Ποταπῇ διαθέσει δεῖ ἐπιτιμᾷν τὸν ἐπιτιμῶντα. ρʹ Τοὺς ἔξωθεν ἐρχομένους καὶ προσαιτοῦντας πῶς ἀπολύσομεν. ραʹ Περὶ τοῦ ἐγχειριζομένου τὴν οἰκονομίαν, καὶ περὶ τῶν προσαιτούντων. ρβʹ Περὶ τοῦ ἐξερχομένου ἀπὸ ἀδελφότητος, καθ' ὃν δήποτε λόγον. ργʹ Ἐπειδὴ συμβαίνει εἴς τινα καὶ αὐτὸν ὀλισθαί νειν τὸν πρεσβύτερον, εἰ δέοι αὐτὸν ἐλέγχεσθαι. 31.1061 ρδʹ Πῶς χρὴ τὰς φροντίδας ἐγχειρίζειν τοῖς ἀδελ φοῖς. ρεʹ Εἰ χρὴ τοὺς εἰσερχομένους εἰς ἀδελφότητα εὐ θέως τέχνας μανθάνειν. ρʹ Ποίοις ἐπιτιμίοις κεχρῆσθαι δεῖ ἐν ἀδελφότητι. ρζʹ Περὶ τοῦ λέγοντος ἐπιθυμίαν ἔχειν συζῇν τῇ ἀδελφότητι. ρηʹ Εἰ χρὴ τὸν προεστῶτα ἐκτὸς τῆς προεστώσης λαλεῖν ἀδελφῇ τινι τὰ πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν τῆς πίστεως. ρθʹ Εἰ χρὴ τὸν προεστῶτα μετὰ τῆς προεστώσης πυκνῶς διαλέγεσθαι. ριʹ Εἰ χρὴ, ἐξομολογουμένης ἀδελφῆς τῷ πρεσβυ τέρῳ, καὶ τὴν πρεσβυτέραν παρεῖναι. ριαʹ Εἰ, τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου γενέσθαι τι προστάξαν τος ἐν ταῖς ἀδελφαῖς παρὰ γνῶσιν τῆς πρεσβυτέ ρας, εὐλόγως ἀγανακτεῖ ἡ πρεσβυτέρα. ριβʹ Ἐάν τις προσέλθῃ τῷ κατὰ Θεὸν βίῳ, εἰ ἀκό λουθόν ἐστι τὸν προεστῶτα ἄνευ γνώμης τῶν ἀδελφῶν τὸν τοιοῦτον προσδέχεσθαι. ριγʹ Εἰ δύναται ὁ φροντίδα ψυχῶν ἐγκεχειρισμένος φυλάξαι τὸ, Ἐὰν μὴ στραφῆτε, καὶ γένησθε ὡς τὰ παιδία. ριδʹ Εἰ δεῖ παντὶ τῷ ἐπιτάσσοντι καὶ οἱῳδηποτοῦν ὑπακούειν. ριεʹ Πῶς ὑπακούειν ἀλλήλοις χρή. ριʹ Μέχρι πόσου ὑπακούειν χρή. ριζʹ Ὁ μὴ πληροφορούμενος ἐν τοῖς καθ' ἡμέραν πρὸς τὴν προκειμένην ἐντολὴν ἐπιτάγμασι, τέ χνην δὲ μαθεῖν ἐπιζητῶν, ποῖον πάθος νοσεῖ, καὶ εἰ χρὴ αὐτοῦ ἀνέχεσθαι. ριηʹ Ὁ σπουδαῖος εἰς τὴν ἐντολὴν, καὶ ἐργαζόμενος οὐχ ὃ ἐπιτάσσεται, ἀλλ' ὃ αὐτὸς θέλει, ποῖον μισθὸν ἔχει. ριθʹ Εἰ ἔξεστιν ἑκάστῳ παραιτεῖσθαι τὸ ἐγχειρισθὲν ἔργον, καὶ ἄλλο ἐπιζητεῖν. ρκʹ Εἰ δεῖ ἀπιέναι που χωρὶς ὑπομνήσεως τοῦ προεστῶτος. ρκαʹ Εἰ ἔξεστι παραιτεῖσθαι τὰ βαρύτερα τῶν ἔργων. ρκβʹ Ἐάν τις, ἐπιτιμηθεὶς εὐλογίαν μὴ λαβεῖν, λέ γῃ ὅτι, Ἐὰν μὴ λάβω εὐλογίαν, οὐκ ἐσθίω· εἰ δεῖ αὐτὸν ἀνέχεσθαι. ρκγʹ Ἐάν τις λυπῆται μὴ ἐπιτρεπόμενος ποιεῖν ὃ μὴ δύναται ἐπιτηδείως ποιεῖν, εἰ χρὴ αὐτοῦ ἀνέχεσθαι. ρκδʹ Εἰ δεῖ μετὰ αἱρετικῶν ἢ μετὰ Ἑλλήνων εὑ ρεθέντα που συνεσθίειν αὐτοῖς, ἢ ἀσπάζεσθαι αὐτούς. ρκεʹ Τὸν πιστευόμενον ἔργον, καὶ ποιοῦντά τι χωρὶς ὑπομνήσεως παρὰ τὸ διατεταγμένον αὐτῷ, εἰ δεῖ ἔχειν τὸ ἔργον. ρκʹ Πῶς ἄν τις μὴ ἡττηθείη τῆς ἐν βρώμασι φι ληδονίας. 31.1064 ρκζʹ Λέγουσί τινες, ὅτι ἀδύνατόν ἐστι μὴ ὀργισθῆ ναι ἄνθρωπον. ρκηʹ Τῷ θέλοντι ἐγκρατεύεσθαι ὑπὲρ δύναμιν, ὥστε καὶ εἰς τὴν προκειμένην ἐντολὴν ἐμποδίζεσθαι, εἰ δεῖ συγχωρεῖν. ρκθʹ Περὶ τοῦ πολλὰ νηστεύοντος, ἐν δὲ τῇ μετα λήψει μὴ δυναμένου ἀνέχεσθαι τοῦ βρώματος. ρλʹ Πῶς χρὴ νηστεύειν, ὅταν χρεία γένηται νηστείας. ρλαʹ Ὁ μὴ μεταλαμβάνων ὅθεν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἐσθίουσιν, ἀλλ' ἕτερον ἐπιζητῶν, εἰ καλῶς ποιεῖ. ρλβʹ Ὁ λέγων ὅτι, Βλάπτει με τοῦτο, καὶ λυπού μενος ἐὰν ἄλλο μὴ δοθῇ, τί ἐστιν. ρλγʹ Ἐὰν δὲ καὶ γογγύσῃ διὰ βρῶμα. ρλδʹ Ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ὀργισθεὶς παραιτῆται λαβεῖν τὰ πρὸς τὴν χρείαν. ρλεʹ Εἰ χρὴ τὸν κάμνοντα αὐτὸν ἐπιζητῆσαι πλέον τι τῆς συνηθείας. ρλʹ Εἰ ἀναγκαῖον πάντας συνάγεσθαι ἐν τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ ἀρίστου, καὶ τὸν ἀπολιμπανόμενον, καὶ μετὰ τὸ ἄριστον ἐρχόμενον, πῶς παρέλθωμεν. ρλζʹ Εἰ καλόν ἐστι τὸ κρῖναι ἐπὶ τοσόνδε, εἰ τύχοι, χρόνον ἀποσχέσθαι τοῦδέ τινος τοῦ βρώματος ἢ τοῦ πόματος. ρληʹ Εἰ χρὴ ἐν ἀδελφότητί τινα πλέον τῶν
