being divided, and partaken of in different ways by different people, it is in no way diminished by those who partake. It gives to all the grace from itself; but it is not consumed by those who partake; but those who receive are filled, and it itself is without want. And just as the sun shining upon bodies, and being partaken of by them in various ways, is in no way diminished by those who partake; so also the Spirit, providing to all the grace from itself, remains undiminished and undivided.
It enlightens all to the understanding of God, inspires the prophets, makes lawgivers wise, consecrates priests, strengthens kings, perfects the just, honors the temperate, works gifts of healing, gives life to the dead, looses those who are bound, adopts the alienated. It works these things through the birth from above. If it takes a believing tax collector, it shows him to be an evangelist; if it comes to a fisherman, it makes him a theologian; if it finds a persecutor repenting, it makes him an apostle to the gentiles, a preacher of faith, a chosen vessel.
Through it the weak are strong; the poor are enriched; the unlearned in speech are wiser than the wise. Paul was weak, but through the presence of the Spirit the handkerchiefs from his skin provided healing to those who received them. Peter also himself was clothed in a body of weakness, but through the indwelling grace of the Spirit the shadow falling from his body drove away the diseases of those who were afflicted. Peter and John were poor; for they had no silver or gold; but they bestowed health more precious than much gold. For though the lame man had received gold from many, 31.472 he was still a beggar; but having received the grace from Peter, he ceased from begging, leaping like a deer, and praising God. John did not know the wisdom of the world, but he uttered words by the power of the Spirit, at which no wisdom can look.
This both stands in heaven, and has filled the earth, and is present everywhere, and is contained nowhere. It dwells whole in each, and is whole with God. It does not minister the gifts in service, but distributes the spiritual gifts with authority. For it distributes, he says, to each one individually, as it wills. It is sent according to the economy, but it works with its own power. Let us pray for this to be present to our souls, and that it may at no time abandon us in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ; to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

μεριζόμενον, καὶ ἄλλως ὑπ' ἄλλου μετεχόμενον, οὐδὲν ἐλαττοῦται παρὰ τῶν μετεχόντων. Πᾶσι μὲν τὴν παρ' ἑαυτοῦ χάριν δίδωσιν· οὐκ ἀναλίσκεται δὲ εἰς τοὺς μετέχοντας· ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ λαβόντες πληροῦν ται, καὶ αὐτό ἐστιν ἀνενδεές. Καὶ ὥσπερ ὁ ἥλιος ἐπιλάμπων τοῖς σώμασι, καὶ ποικίλως ὑπ' αὐτῶν μετεχόμενος, οὐδὲν ἐλαττοῦται παρὰ τῶν μετεχόντων· οὕτω καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα πᾶσι τὴν παρ' ἑαυτοῦ χάριν παρέχον, ἀμείωτον μένει καὶ ἀδιαίρετον.
Πάντας φωτίζει πρὸς τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ κατανόησιν, ἐμπνεῖ τοῖς προφήταις, νομοθέτας σοφίζει, ἱερέας τελειοῖ, ἐνισχύει βασιλεῖς, καταρτίζει δικαίους, σεμνύνει σώφρονας, ἐνεργεῖ χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων, ζωοποιεῖ τοὺς νεκροὺς, λύει τοὺς πεπεδημένους, υἱοθετεῖ τοὺς ἠλλοτριωμένους. Ταῦτα διὰ τῆς ἄνωθεν γεννήσεως ἐνεργεῖ. Ἐὰν τελώνην λάβῃ πιστεύοντα, εὐαγγελιστὴν ἀποδείκνυσιν· ἐὰν ἐν ἁλιεῖ γένηται, θεολόγον ἀποτελεῖ· ἐὰν διώκτην εὕρῃ μετανοοῦντα, ἀπόστολον ἐθνῶν ἀπεργάζεται, κήρυκα πίστεως, σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς.
∆ι' αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀσθενεῖς ἰσχυροί· οἱ πτωχοὶ πλουτίζουσιν· οἱ ἰδιῶται τῷ λόγῳ σοφώτεροί εἰσι τῶν σοφῶν. Παῦλος ἀσθενὴς, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὴν παρουσίαν τοῦ Πνεύματος τὰ σουδάρια τοῦ χρωτὸς αὐτοῦ ἴασιν παρεῖχε τοῖς ὑποδεχομένοις. Πέτρος καὶ αὐτὸς σῶμα περικείμενος ἀσθενείας, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὴν ἐνοικοῦσαν χάριν τοῦ Πνεύματος ἡ ἐκπίπτουσα τοῦ σώματος σκιὰ ἀπεδίωκε τὰς νόσους τῶν καταπονου- μένων. Πτωχὸς Πέτρος καὶ Ἰωάννης· οὐ γὰρ εἶχον ἀργύριον, οὐδὲ χρυσίον· ἀλλ' ἐχαρίζοντο ὑγίειαν πολλῶν χρυσίων τιμιωτέραν. Παρὰ πολλῶν γὰρ λα 31.472 βὼν χρυσίον ὁ χωλὸς, ἔτι προσαίτης ἦν· παρὰ δὲ Πέτρου δεξάμενος τὴν χάριν, ἐπαύσατο προσαιτῶν, ἁλλόμενος ὥσπερ ἔλαφος, καὶ αἰνῶν τὸν Θεόν. Οὐκ ᾔδει Ἰωάννης τὴν τοῦ κόσμου σοφίαν, ἀλλ' ἐφθέγξατο ῥήματα τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Πνεύματος, οἷς οὐδεμία σοφία προσβλέψαι δύναται.
Τοῦτο καὶ ἐν οὐρανῷ ἕστηκε, καὶ τὴν γῆν πεπλήρωκε, καὶ πανταχοῦ πάρεστι, καὶ οὐδαμοῦ περιέχεται. Ὅλον ἑκάστῳ ἐνοικεῖ, καὶ ὅλον ἐστὶ μετὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ. Οὐ λειτουργικῶς διακονεῖ τὰς δωρεὰς, ἀλλ' αὐθεντικῶς διαιρεῖ τὰ χαρίσματα. ∆ιαιρεῖ γὰρ, φησὶν, ἰδίᾳ ἑκάστῳ, καθὼς βούλεται. Ἀποστέλλεται μὲν οἰκονομικῶς, ἐνεργεῖ δὲ αὐτεξουσίως. Τοῦτο παρεῖναι ταῖς ψυχαῖς ἡμῶν εὐξώμεθα, καὶ μηδένα καιρὸν ἡμᾶς ἀπολιμπάνειν ἐν χάριτι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ· ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
