for wages; or for the sake of the good itself, and the love for the one who gave us the law, rejoicing that we were deemed worthy to serve so glorious and good a God, and are thus in the disposition of sons.
Therefore, neither will he who keeps the commandments in fear, and is always suspicious of the penalty for sloth, do some of the things commanded him and overlook others; but he will consider the punishment for every transgression equally fearsome for himself. And for this reason, he who is terrified of everything out of reverence is blessed; and he stands firm in the truth, able to say: I foresaw the Lord always before me, for He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken; as choosing to overlook none of the things that are necessary; and, Blessed is the man who fears the Lord. Why? Because He shall delight greatly in His commandments. Therefore, it is not characteristic of those who fear to neglect any of the commandments, or to do them carelessly; but neither will the hired servant choose to transgress any of the orders. For how will he receive the wage for his work in the vineyard, if he has not fulfilled all that was agreed upon? For if even one necessary thing is lacking, he has rendered it useless to the owner.
Who then will still pay a wage for the damage to the one who did wrong? The third was service according to love. What son, then, whose aim 31.897 is to please his father, while gladdening him in greater things, will choose to grieve him for the sake of the smallest things? And much more so, remembering the Apostle, who said: And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed. Those, then, who transgress most of the commandments, in what category do they wish to be placed? Neither serving God as a Father, nor obeying him as one who promises great things, nor serving him as a Master. For if I am a Father, he says, where is my glory? And if I am a Lord, where is my fear? For he who fears the Lord will delight greatly in his commandments; but through transgression of the law, he says, you dishonor God. How then, having preferred a life of pleasure to one according to the commandment, shall we assume for ourselves the blessedness of life, and equal citizenship with the saints, and the joys with angels in the presence of Christ? Such fantasies are truly of a childish mind. How shall I be with Job, I who have not accepted even a chance affliction with thanksgiving? How with David, I who have not been disposed with longsuffering toward my enemy?
How with Daniel, I who have not sought God with continual self-control and diligent prayer? How with each of the saints, I who have not walked in their footsteps? What judge is so undiscerning as to deem worthy of equal crowns the victor and the one who has not competed at all? What general ever called those who did not even appear at the battle to an equal share of the spoils with the victors? God is good, but also just. And of a just one, the retribution is according to worth, as it is written: Do good, O Lord, to those who are good and to those who are upright in heart. But those who turn aside to crooked ways, the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity. Merciful, but also a judge. For the Lord, he says, loves mercy and judgment. Therefore he says: I will sing of mercy and judgment to you, O Lord. We have learned to whom mercy applies; for, Blessed, he says, are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Do you see how he uses mercy with discernment? neither showing mercy without judgment, nor judging without mercy. For the Lord is merciful, and just. Let us not, therefore, know God by halves, nor take his philanthropy as an occasion for sloth. For this reason there are thunders, for this reason thunderbolts, so that goodness may not be despised. He who makes the sun rise, also condemns to blindness. He who gives the rain, 31.900 also rains down fire. Those things are of his kindness, these of his severity; let us either love on account of those, or fear on account of these, so that it may not also be said to us: Or of the riches of his kindness, and forbearance, and longsuffering

Οὔτε οὖν ὁ ἐν φόβῳ τὰς ἐντολὰς κατορθῶν, καὶ ἀεὶ τὸ τῆς ῥᾳθυμίας ἐπιτίμιον ὑφορώμενος, τὰ μὲν ποιή σει τῶν προστεταγμένων αὐτῷ, τὰ δὲ παρόψεται· ἀλλὰ τὴν ἐπὶ πάσῃ παρακοῇ ἐκδίκησιν ὁμοίως ἑαυτῷ φοβερὰν ὑπολήψεται. Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο μακαρίζεται μὲν ὁ πάντα καταπτήσσων δι' εὐλάβειαν· στήκει δὲ ἑδραῖος ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ, δυνάμενος εἰπεῖν· Προωρώ μην τὸν Κύριον ἐνώπιόν μου διαπαντὸς, ὅτι ἐκ δεξιῶν μού ἐστιν, ἵνα μὴ σαλευθῶ· ὡς οὐδὲν αἱ ρούμενος παριδεῖν τῶν δεόντων· καὶ, Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὁ φοβούμενος τὸν Κύριον. ∆ιὰ τί; Ὅτι Ἐν ταῖς ἐντολαῖς αὐτοῦ θελήσει σφόδρα. Οὐ τοίνυν ἐστὶ τῶν φοβουμένων τὸ παριέναι τι τῶν ἐντεταλμέ νων, ἢ ἀμελῶς ποιεῖν· ἀλλ' οὐδὲ ὁ μισθωτὸς παρα βῆναί τι τῶν διατεταγμένων αἱρήσεται. Πῶς γὰρ κομίσεται τὸν μισθὸν τῆς ἐργασίας τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, μὴ πάντα πληρώσας τὰ συμπεφωνημένα; Καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἕν τι ἐλλείπῃ τῶν ἀναγκαίων, ἄχρηστον αὐτὸν τῷ κεκτημένῳ κατέστησε.
Τίς οὖν ἔτι τῆς βλάβης μισθὸν ὑποτελέσει τῷ ἀδικήσαντι; Τρίτον ἦν ἡ κατὰ ἀγάπην ὑπηρεσία. Τίς οὖν υἱὸς, σκοπὸν 31.897 ἔχων τὴν τοῦ πατρὸς εὐαρέστησιν, ἐπὶ τοῖς μείζοσιν αὐτὸν εὐφραίνων, τῶν μικροτάτων ἕνεκεν λυπεῖν αἱρήσεται; Πολὺ δὲ πλέον, καὶ τοῦ Ἀποστόλου μεμνημένος, εἰπόντος· Καὶ μὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἐν ᾧ ἐσφραγίσθητε. Οἱ τοίνυν τὰς πλείστας τῶν ἐντολῶν παραβαίνοντες ἐν ποίῳ μέρει τετάχθαι βούλονται; μήτε ὡς Πατρὶ ὑπηρετοῦντες τῷ Θεῷ, μήτε ὡς μεγάλα ἐπαγγελλομένῳ πειθόμενοι, μήτε ὡς ∆εσπότῃ δουλεύοντες. Εἰ γὰρ Πατήρ εἰμι, φησὶν, ἐγὼ, ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ δόξα μου; καὶ εἰ Κύριός εἰμι ἐγὼ, ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ φόβος μου; Ὁ μὲν γὰρ φοβούμενος τὸν Κύριον, ἐν ταῖς ἐντολαῖς αὐτοῦ θελήσει σφόδρα· διὰ δὲ τῆς παραβάσεως τοῦ νόμου τὸν Θεὸν, φησὶν, ἀτιμάζεις. Πῶς οὖν, τὸν καθ' ἡδονὴν βίον τοῦ κατ' ἐντολὴν προτιμήσαντες, ζωῆς μακαριότητα, καὶ ἰσοπολιτείαν τῶν ἁγίων, καὶ τὰς μετ' ἀγγέλων εὐφροσύνας ἐν προσώπῳ Χριστοῦ ἑαυτοῖς ὑποθώμεθα; Νηπίας ὄντως φρενὸς τὰ τοιαῦτα φαντάσματα. Πῶς ἔσομαι μετὰ Ἰὼβ, ὁ μηδὲ τὴν τυχοῦσαν θλίψιν μετὰ εὐχαριστίας δεξάμενος; Πῶς μετὰ τοῦ ∆αβὶδ, ὁ μὴ πρὸς τὸν πολέμιον μακροθύμως διατεθείς;
Πῶς μετὰ τοῦ ∆ανιὴλ, ὁ μὴ μετ' ἐγκρατείας διηνεκοῦς καὶ δεήσεως φιλοπόνου τὸν Θεὸν ἐκζητήσας; Πῶς μεθ' ἑκάστου τῶν ἁγίων, ὁ μὴ τοῖς ἴχνεσιν αὐτῶν περιπατήσας; Τίς οὕτως ἄκριτος ἀθλοθέτης, ὡς τῶν ἴσων ἀξιῶσαι στεφάνων τὸν νικητὴν καὶ τὸν μηδὲν ἠγωνισμένον; Τίς στρατηγὸς εἰς τὴν μερίδα τῶν σκύλων ἐξίσου ποτὲ τοῖς νενικηκόσι τοὺς μηδὲ φανέντας ἐπὶ τῆς μάχης ἐκάλεσεν; Ἀγαθὸς ὁ Θεὸς, ἀλλὰ καὶ δίκαιος. ∆ικαίου δὲ, ἡ πρὸς ἀξίαν ἀντίδοσις, καθὼς γέγραπται· Ἀγάθυνον, Κύριε, τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς καὶ τοῖς εὐθέσι τῇ καρδίᾳ. Τοὺς δὲ ἐκκλίνοντας εἰς τὰς στραγγαλιὰς ἀπάξει Κύριος μετὰ τῶν ἐργαζομένων τὴν ἀνομίαν. Ἐλεήμων, ἀλλὰ καὶ κριτής. Ἀγαπᾷ γὰρ, φησὶν, ἐλεημοσύνην καὶ κρίσιν ὁ Κύριος. ∆ιὸ λέγει· Ἔλεον καὶ κρίσιν ᾄσομαί σοι, Κύριε. Ἐμάθομεν ἐπὶ τίνας τὸ ἔλεος· Μακάριοι γὰρ, φησὶν, οἱ ἐλεήμονες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται. Ὁρᾷς πῶς κεκριμένως κέχρηται τῷ ἐλέῳ; οὔτε ἀκρίτως ἐλεῶν, οὔτε ἀνηλεῶς κρίνων. Ἐλεήμων γὰρ ὁ Κύριος, καὶ δίκαιος. Μὴ οὖν ἐξ ἡμισείας τὸν Θεὸν γνωρίζωμεν, μηδὲ ἀφορμὴν ῥᾳθυμίας τὴν αὐτοῦ φιλανθρωπίαν λαμβάνωμεν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο βρονταὶ, διὰ τοῦτο κεραυνοὶ, ἵνα μὴ καταφρονῆται ἡ ἀγαθότης. Ὁ τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλων, καὶ ἀβλεψίαν καταδικάζει. Ὁ τὸν ὄμβρον διδοὺς, 31.900 καὶ τὸ πῦρ βρέχει. Ἐκεῖνα τῆς χρηστότητος, ταῦτα τῆς ἀποτομίας· ἢ δι' ἐκεῖνα ἀγαπήσωμεν, ἢ διὰ ταῦτα φοβηθῶμεν, ἵνα μὴ ῥηθῇ καὶ ἡμῖν· Ἢ τοῦ πλούτου τῆς χρηστότητος αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῆς ἀνοχῆς, καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας
