Therefore, a wound is one thing, and a bruise another, and a man is one thing, and a young man another. That if from Cain it is avenged sevenfold, but from Lamech seventy times seven, to suffer four hundred and ninety punishments. Is he not just, if indeed God's judgment upon Cain is just, so that he provides seven punishments; for the one did not learn from another to kill, but this one saw a murderer undergoing punishment.

But some have rushed to such an argument, not inconsistent with ecclesiastical doctrine, that from Cain until the flood seven generations passed. And immediately the punishment was brought upon the earth, because of the great outpouring of sin that had occurred. But the sin of Lamech does not require a flood for its remedy, but of him who takes away the sin of the world.

Ὅτι εἰ ἐκ Καῒν ἐκδεδίκηται ἑπτάκις, ἐκ δὲ Λάμεχ ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτὰ τετρακοσίας καὶ ἐννενήκοντα τιμωρίας ὑποσχεῖν. Εἰ μὴ δίκαιος, εἴπερ δικαία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ κρίσις ἐπὶ τοῦ Καῒν, ὤστε ἑπτὰ αὐτὸν παρέχειν τὰς κολάσεις· ὁ μὲν γὰρ οὐκ ἔμαθεν παρ' ἄλλου τὸ φονεύειν, οὗτος δὲ εἶδεν τιμωρίαν ὑπέχοντα φονευτήν.

Ἐγὼ δὲ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἔχων τὸν στένοντα καὶ τρέμοντα, καὶ τὸ μέγεθος τῆς ὀργῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ, οὐκ ἐσωφρονίσθην τῷ ὑποδείγματι, ὅθεν ἄξιός εἰμι τετρακοσίας καὶ ἐννενήκοντα δοῦναι κολάσεις. Ἔνιοι δὲ πρὸς τοιοῦτον ὥρμησαν λόγον οὐκ ἀπᾴδοντα τοῦ ἐκκλησιαστικοῦ δόγματος, ὅτι ἀπὸ τοῦ Καῒν ἕως τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ ἑπτὰ παρεληλύθασιν γενεαί. Καὶ εὐθέως ἐπηνέχθη τῇ γῇ ἡ τιμωρία, διὰ τὸ πολλὴν γενέσθαι χύσιν τῆς ἁμαρτίας. Τὸ δὲ ἁμάρτημα τοῦ Λάμεχ οὐ κατακλυσμοῦ δεῖται πρὸς θεραπείαν, ἀλλ' αὐτοῦ τοῦ αἴροντος τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου.
