Lord .. my, for I am the seed of Abraham ... according to the motion etc. as some babble, we live; but you yourself happen to be the lawgiver both of living and until when one must live, as you will; and for whom living was hopeless, having heard the prophetic decree, for him ... the sun went backward ... pray to the one who sees hidden things, so that s. p. the prepared scourges of the eternal fire. 16 And there they were saying the blessed ode that .. fasting and repentance .. abundant, God justly delivered them; for because they did not wish to worship idols, God gave the power, since this was pleasing to him; but let us come also to e. t. m. 17 Having; for like a serpent he rushed against Jerusalem not ... light, you did not hear .. he took captive ... slaughtered children .. he shattered the Cherubim .. heavenly; away with you! do not suppose this, man, but the sweetest things (read sculptures) in the temple ... he carried off, he took away all the offerings; he burned the temple from its foundations, the wretched one destroyed everything ... to carry off the vessels, to place idols inside the temple, in order to slaughter the people of the Lord, and to commit innocent murders; alas for such a concession, was then the godless barbarian not m. th. a.? 18 You saw .. evils of his godless soul ... he was turned into a beast and lived in the desert, he was scourged, so that he might be saved he had ... since having foreseen the fire extinguished by the dew, he did not believe. And what happens after these things? Hear him saying: I ... when therefore [caetera ut in priore textu n. 18, 19, p. 31 D] punishment only if having repented you do not turn back again .. 19 Let no one therefore, brothers, despair of his own salvation [inde codex noster solus in plane nova luxu-riose vagatur] That Samson, the strong in wars, who was announced even before his birth, as the angel commanded his mother, [from everything] which is produced from the vine and strong drink he shall not drink (the not drinking was a principle of fasting and self-control). And as long as he was fortified by fasting and by prayer and by repentance, the foreigners fell by the thousands, gates of cities were torn up, lions fell down by the strength of the just man. But when he submerged himself in drunkenness, he was captured by the foreigners and became a plaything. Let us fast therefore, brothers, that we may return to paradise, from where we have fallen. If Adam had fasted [cod. εἰσενήστευσεν] and had kept the commandment, we would not have fallen into the passions of dishonor; we would not have been condemned to work the ground; the sprouting of thorns would not have sprung up and the condemnation in sorrows would not have been signified; for such are the wages of sin. But let us, beloved, always and forever give thanks, according to the prophet David, that his mercy is forever [inde vulgata recurrunt, sed libero pede]. Peter the chief and leader of the apostles was challenged by a servant girl, and denied the Lord three times, but having repented he wept bitterly; and to weep bitterly shows heartfelt repentance, and for this reason not only did he receive forgiveness for the denial, but he also held the apostolic dignity inalienably. 20 Having therefore, brothers, many examples of those who have sinned and been saved, you yourselves also confess eagerly [caetera iterum recidunt in prius homiliae exemplar, eodemque modo usque in finem num. 20 pergunt].
