Sabaoth, Jesus, Lord, physician, good, cloud, Mary. For seven is also the perfect number.
5. On the seventh day God rested from all his works. Sevenfold vengeance was loosed on the one who slew Cain. For the defiled one, having committed seven sins: envy, deceit, murder of a brother, the first teacher of murders, becoming a pollution to this life, grieving his parents, he lied to God. And he fell under seven punishments: he lived on the cursed earth, he worked it, looking on he groaned, he trembled, he was a fugitive, he agonized over the passerby, he had a mark that made him public. Enoch, the seventh from Adam, who pleased God, and was separated from the impious like wheat from the tares. Jacob served Laban for seven years first, and a second seven for Rachel. Abraham gave seven ewe lambs to Abimelech as a witness of his ownership of the well. Seven lean kine of famine, and seven plump ears of corn described abundance, the dream of Pharaoh. Joshua the son of Nun carried seven sacred trumpets, when he brought down the walls of Jericho. In the seventh year of servitude the Jews re 43.516 lease the Hebrews. From the fifteenth until the twenty-first, in which the Passover of the Jews was celebrated, are seven days of the feast. God listed seven nations for the Jews to enslave: the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, the Jebusites, the Amorites. Moses’ sister, being set apart, made six days seven outside the camp. Samson was bound with seven fresh bowstrings, and he snapped them as a thread. He had seven sacred locks of hair; the cutting of which drove away their strength and power. There are seven eyes that watch over all the earth. Zachariah had seen seven pipes and seven lamps, for there are seven spirits from God. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are seven: a spirit of wisdom, a spirit of understanding, a spirit of counsel, a spirit of strength, a spirit of knowledge, a spirit of godliness, a spirit of the fear of God. Wisdom has propped up her own tent with seven pillars. In Isaiah, seven women will entreat one man, saying: We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel. Only let your name be called upon us; take away our reproach. For seven books of the law bear witness to Christ, that being incarnate He himself took away their reproach: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges. For if he had not become man, they would have been written off as myths. Sacrificed without a sacrifice, like Isaac, and suffering impassibly, and bearing his own cross on his shoulders, he confirmed the things lying in the book of Genesis. Contained in a virgin’s womb, and not consuming with the fire of divinity the one who bore him, he prefigured the bush that was burning but not consumed, which lies in the book of Exodus. Acting as high priest, like Aaron, mediating for us in things pertaining to God, he presented the things written in Leviticus. Joining the New Testament to the Old, and saying: It was said to them of old time: You shall not commit adultery; but I say to you, that whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery with her already in his heart; and again: It was said to them of old time: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth; but I say to you, that you resist not evil, but whosoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also; he delivered the things in Deuteronomy a second time, and having repeated what is profitable. Having led our race into the true rest, and having prepared for us various mansions in the heavens, he revealed the things in the book of Numbers. Entering into the Jordan, and sanctifying the waters, and on the cross calling back the fleeing sun, and making a double day instead of a single one, he depicted for those who read not carelessly the things in the book of Joshua, son of Nun. Having laid down his beloved so 43.517 ul for us, and he will give himself as a ransom for many, he interpreted the things in the book of Judges; for Jephthah also whole burnt offerings on behalf of the people
