of letters, but he remained at home, putting forward as a pretext a sedition of the people, and an untimely zeal of some who supposedly supported him; and yet before the imperial letters this very people had deluged him with countless insults. But we are not investigating these things now, but we have said these things wishing to show that he was caught doing evil. Yet not even after this did we keep quiet, but we pressed on, demanding that a tribunal be held by question and answer; for we said that we were ready to show both that we ourselves were blameless, and that they had committed the worst transgressions. For there were some Syrians among those who were once present with him, who had been left behind here, who had done everything jointly with him; and we came forward ready to be judged, and we often made a nuisance of ourselves over this, demanding that the records be given to us, or bills of indictment, or that the nature of the charges be made known, or the accusers themselves; and we have obtained none of these things, but were again cast out of the Church. How could I narrate what followed from this, surpassing all tragedy? What word will present these things? What ear will receive them without shuddering? For while we were proposing these things, as I said before, a sudden multitude of soldiers on the great Sabbath itself, as the day was now hastening towards evening, entered the churches, violently cast out all the clergy with us, and the sanctuary was surrounded with weapons. And women of the oratories who had disrobed for baptism at that very moment fled naked out of fear of this harsh assault, not even being allowed to put on the decorum proper to women; and many were cast out after receiving wounds, and the baptismal fonts were filled with blood, and the sacred streams were reddened with the blood. And the horror did not stop even there. But the soldiers entered where the holy things were kept, some of whom, as we learned, were uninitiated, and they saw all the things within, and the most holy blood of Christ, amidst such a tumult, was poured out onto the garments of the aforesaid soldiers; and everything was dared as in a barbarian captivity. And the people were driven into the wilderness, and all the laity spent their time outside the city, and on such a feast the churches were empty of the people, and more than forty bishops in communion with us were driven out with the laity and the clergy, rashly and in vain; and wailings, and dirges, and fountains of tears everywhere in the marketplaces, in the houses, in the desolate places, and every part of the city was filled with these misfortunes; for because of the excess of lawlessness, not only those who suffered, but also those who endured no such thing, grieved with us, not only those of the same faith, but also heretics, and Jews and Greeks, and as if the city had been captured by storm, so was everything in tumult and disturbances and wailings. And these things were dared against the will of the most pious 52.534 emperor, when night fell, with bishops contriving them, and in many places acting as generals, who were not ashamed to have drill-instructors leading the way instead of deacons. And when day came, the whole city was removed outside the walls under trees and glens, celebrating the feast like scattered sheep. 4. It is possible for you to consider everything else from this point on; for as I said before, it is not possible to go through in my account everything that happened one by one. The grievous thing is that so many and so great evils have not yet even now found a resolution, nor even the hope of a resolution; but the terror extends each day, and we have become a laughingstock to many—or rather, no one laughs, even if they are ten thousand times a transgressor, but all lament, as I said, the summit of evils, this new lawlessness. What could one say about the disturbances of the other Churches? For the evil did not stop here, but reached as far as the East. For just as when a wicked stream is poured out from its source, the remaining parts are corrupted, so indeed now as if from the spring of this great city

Ἀλλ' οὐ ταῦτα περιεργαζόμεθα νῦν, ἀλλ' ἐκεῖνο δεῖξαι βουλόμενοι, ὅτι κακουργῶν ἀπελήφθη, ταῦτα εἰρήκαμεν. Πλὴν οὐδὲ μετὰ ταῦτα ἡμεῖς ἡσυχάσαμεν, ἀλλ' ἐπεκείμεθα ἀξιοῦντες δικαστήριον γενέσθαι κατὰ πεῦσιν καὶ ἀπόκρισιν· ἕτοιμοι γὰρ εἶναι ἐλέγομεν δεῖξαι ἑαυτούς τε ἀνευθύνους ὄντας, ἐκείνους δὲ τὰ ἔσχατα παρανομήσαντας. Καὶ γὰρ ἦσάν τινες Σύροι τῶν ποτε μετ' αὐτοῦ παρόντων, ἐνταῦθα ἀπολειφθέντες, οἳ κοινῇ μετ' αὐτοῦ τὸ πᾶν ἔδρασαν· καὶ προσίεμεν ἕτοιμοι δικάζεσθαι, καὶ πολλάκις ἠνωχλήσαμεν ὑπὲρ τούτου, ἀξιοῦντες τὰ ὑπομνήματα ἡμῖν δοθῆναι, ἢ λιβέλλους κατηγοριῶν, ἢ φύσιν ἐγκλημάτων γνωρισθῆναι, ἢ αὐτοὺς τοὺς κατηγόρους· καὶ οὐδενὸς τούτων τετυχήκαμεν, ἀλλὰ πάλιν ἐξεβλήθημεν τῆς Ἐκκλησίας. Ἡμέρας δὲ γενομένης, πᾶσα ἡ πόλις ἕξω τῶν τειχῶν μετῳκίζετο ὑπὸ δένδρα καὶ νάπας, καθάπερ πρόβατα διεσπαρμένα τὴν ἑορτὴν ἐπιτελοῦντες. δʹ. Ἔξεστιν ὑμῖν τὰ ἐντεῦθεν λογίσασθαι λοιπὸν ἅπαντα· ὥσπερ γὰρ ἔφθην εἰπὼν, οὐχ οἷόν τε πάντα ἐπελθεῖν τῷ λόγῳ καθ' ἕκαστον γινόμενα. Τὸ δὴ χαλεπὸν, ὅτι τοσαῦτα καὶ τηλικαῦτα κακὰ οὐδέπω καὶ νῦν λύσιν ἔλαβεν, ἀλλ' οὐδὲ ἐλπίδα λύσεως· ἀλλ' ἐκτείνεται καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν τὸ δεινὸν, καὶ γέλως γεγόναμεν τοῖς πολλοῖς μᾶλλον δὲ γελᾷ μὲν οὐδεὶς, κἂν μυριάκις παράνομος ᾖ, θρηνοῦσι δὲ πάντες, ὅπερ ἔφην, τὸν κολοφῶνα τῶν κακῶν, τὴν καινὴν ταύτην παρανομίαν. Τί ἄν τις εἴποι τὰς τῶν λοιπῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν ταραχάς; Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐνταῦθα ἔστη τὸ κακὸν, ἀλλὰ καὶ μέχρι τῆς ἕω ἔφθασε. Καθάπερ γὰρ ἀπὸ κεφαλῆς πονηροῦ ῥεύματος ἐκχυθέντος, τὰ λοιπὰ διαφθείρεται μέρη, οὕτω δὴ καὶ νῦν ὥσπερ ἐκ πηγῆς τῆς μεγάλης ταύτης πόλεως
