You foretell the death to your disciples, and you do not know the place? He knew, but he spoke on account of the Jews, since they were ungrateful; so that to say, "Where have you laid him?" was not of ignorance; since also in paradise he said to Adam, "Adam, where are you?" Did he therefore not know where he was? But since the devil 48.1078 said to them, "For in whatsoever day you eat of this tree, you shall be as gods," they supposed that they were about to become gods.
And for this reason God said to him, "Adam, where are you?" since you have eaten, and you remained a man; for this reason God said to him, "Adam, where are you?" Thus he also did in the case of Lazarus. Approaching the tomb, he says to the Jews, "Take away the stone from the tomb"; and they took it away. The sister of Lazarus says to him, "Lord, by this time he stinks; for he has been dead four days." And crying with a loud voice, he says, "Lazarus, come forth"; and he came forth bound with grave-clothes. Could he, then, who moves mountains into the hearts of the seas, not move the stone with a word? He who broke the stings of death, he who shattered the gates of Hades, was he not also able to tear the grave-clothes? And he says to them, "Loose him." Why? So that, if they should deny it, their hands and their eyes might convict them; for this reason he said, "Loose him." And at the wedding he did the same thing, for he said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water"; and they filled the waterpots, and he made the water wine. For this reason, then, he secured them from every side; for the Jews were always ungrateful and shameless. Do you wish to learn how many things God provided for them, and they became forgetful? Learn; but apply yourselves for me, I beseech you, pay attention to what is being said; for I wish to show you that from the beginning the Jews were ungrateful; Seventy-five souls went down into Egypt, and they became six hundred thousand. Joseph died, and another king arose for them, who did not remember Joseph; and he afflicted the sons of Israel greatly. Therefore they cried to God, saying, "Lord, you swore to our fathers, that 'I will give to your seed a land flowing with milk and honey'; and now, Lord, remember the covenant which you made with our fathers, and deliver us from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and from the slavery of the Egyptians." Therefore God heard their voice, and sent Moses to them. But apply yourselves for me, I beseech you. God says to Moses, "Take a lamb without blemish, a firstborn of a year old, and sacrifice it, and each one shall anoint his door with its blood, so that, when the angel comes having drawn the sword, and sees that the blood is anointed on that house, he may depart; but if he sees that it is not there, he may enter, and destroy all."
Moses therefore did so, and gave it to the people; and they, having received it, each anointed their doors. And the angel came, having drawn his sword, and he saw the blood on the doors, and departed; but where he did not see it, he entered, and killed all. And all these things did not happen simply; but since we were to be saved through blood and wood, for this reason God said, that "Each shall anoint the blood upon the doors." Why did he not say, "Anoint the blood on the wall"? Because they were not to be saved, except through wood. Moses therefore led them out of Egypt, and brought them into the desert, and they say to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, has he brought us into the desert to kill us?" Was it not well with us in Egypt, when we ate the cucumbers and melons and the onions and the garlic? Have you seen their ingratitude? They themselves said to God, they themselves asked, that "Lead us out of the land of Egypt"; and having come into the desert, they were unthankful. Have you seen their ingratitude? But learn the greater and more extraordinary thing. They spent forty years in the desert; their hair did not grow, nor their nails; their garment was not soiled, their sandal was not worn out; they did not toil, they did not dig; they did not yoke oxen, they did not draw a plough, they did not cut furrows, they did not pull up thorns, seeds they did not

Τὸν θάνατον προδηλοῖς τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου, καὶ τὸν τόπον οὐκ οἶδας; Ἤδει, ἀλλὰ διὰ τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἔλεγεν, ἐπειδὴ ἀγνώμονες ἦσαν· ὥστε τὸ εἰπεῖν, Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν; οὐκ ἀγνοίας ἦν· ἐπεὶ καὶ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ ἔλεγε τῷ Ἀδάμ· Ἀδὰμ, ποῦ εἶ; Ἆραοὖν οὐκ ᾔδει ποῦ ἦν; Ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ὁ διά48.1078 βολος, ὅτι Ἐν ᾗ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ φάγησθε ἐκ τοῦ ξύλου τούτου, ἔσεσθε ὡς θεοὶ, ὑπελάμβανον ἐκεῖνοι ὅτι μέλλουσι γίνεσθαι θεοί.
Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἔλεγεν αὐτῷ ὁ Θεός· Ἀδὰμ, ποῦ εἶ; ἀφ' οὗ ἔφαγες, καὶ ἔμεινας ἄνθρωπος· διὰ τοῦτο ἔλεγεν αὐτῷ ὁ Θεός· Ἀδὰμ, ποῦ εἶ; Οὕτω καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ Λαζάρου ἐποίησεν. Ἐγγίσας τῷ μνήματι λέγει τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις· Ἄρατε τὸν λίθον ἐκ τοῦ μνήματος· καὶ ἦραν. Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τοῦ Λαζάρου· Κύριε, ἤδη ὄζει· ἦν γὰρ τετραήμερος. Καὶ κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγει· Λάζαρε, δεῦρο ἔξω· καὶ ἐξῆλθε κηρίαις δεδεμένος. Ἆρα οὖν ὁ μετατιθῶν ὄρη ἐν καρδίαις θαλασσῶν, οὐκ ἠδύνατο λόγῳ τὸν λίθον κινῆσαι; ὁ τὰ κέντρα τοῦ θανάτου κατακλάσας, ὁ τὰς θύρας τοῦ ᾅδου συντρίψας, οὐκ ἠδύνατο καὶ τὰς κηρίας διαῤῥῆξαι; Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Λύσατε αὐτόν. ∆ιὰ τί; Ἵνα, ἐὰν ἀρνήσωνται, αἱ χεῖρες αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἐλέγξωσιν αὐτούς· διὰ τοῦτο εἶπε· Λύσατε αὐτόν. Καὶ ἐν τῷ γάμῳ τὸ αὐτὸ ἐποίησεν, ὅτι εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Γεμίσατε τὰς ὑδρίας ὕδατος· καὶ ἐγέμισαν τὰς ὑδρίας, καὶ ἐποίησε τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο οὖν πανταχόθεν ἠσφαλίζετο αὐτούς· ἀεὶ γὰρ ἀγνώμονες ἐγένοντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ ἀναίσχυντοι. Θέλετε μαθεῖν πόσα παρέσχεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς, καὶ ἀμνήμονες ἐγένοντο; Μάθετε· ἀλλὰ συντείνατέ μοι ἑαυτοὺς, παρακαλῶ, προσέχετε τοῖς λεγομένοις· βούλομαι γὰρ ὑμῖν δεῖξαι ὅτι ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἀγνώμονες ἦσαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἑβδομήκοντα καὶ πέντε ψυχαὶ κατέβησαν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ ἐγένοντο ἑξακόσιαι χιλιάδες. Ἐτελεύτησεν Ἰωσὴφ, καὶ ἀνέστη αὐτοῖς ἕτερος βασιλεὺς, ὃς οὐκ ἐμνήσθη τοῦ Ἰωσήφ· ἔθλιβε δὲ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ σφόδρα. Ἐβόησαν οὖν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν λέγοντες· Κύριε, σὺ ὤμοσας τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν, ὅτι ∆ώσω τῷ σπέρματι ὑμῶν γῆν ῥέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι· καὶ νῦν, Κύριε, μνήσθητι τῆς διαθήκης ἧς ἔθου τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν, καὶ ἐξελοῦ ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς Φαραὼ βασιλέως Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἐκ δουλείας τῶν Αἰγυπτίων. Ἤκουσεν οὖν ὁ Θεὸς τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔπεμψε τὸν Μωϋσῆν πρὸς αὐτούς. Ἀλλὰ συντείνατέ μοι ἑαυτοὺς, παρακαλῶ. Λέγει τῷ Μωϋσῇ ὁ Θεός· Λάβε ἀρνίον ἄμωμον ἐνιαύσιον πρωτότοκον, καὶ θῦσον, καὶ τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ χρίσει ἕκαστος εἰς τὴν θύραν, ἵν', ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὁ ἄγγελος ἔχων ἐσπασμένην τὴν ῥομφαίαν, καὶ ἴδῃ ὅτι τὸ αἷμα κέχρισται εἰς τὸν οἶκον ἐκεῖνον, ἀναχωρῇ· ἐὰν δὲ ἴδῃ ὅτι οὐκ ἔνι, εἰσέρχηται, καὶ πάντας ἐξολοθρεύσῃ.
Ἐποίησεν οὖν ὁ Μωϋσῆς οὕτω, καὶ ἔδωκε τῷ λαῷ· καὶ λαβόντες ἐκεῖνοι, ἕκαστος ἔχρισε τὰς θύρας αὐτῶν. Καὶ ἤρχετο ὁ ἄγγελος ἔχων ἐσπασμένην τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔβλεπε τὸ αἷμα ἐν ταῖς θύραις, καὶ ἀνεχώρει· ὅπου δὲ οὐκ ἔβλεπεν, εἰσήρχετο, καὶ πάντας ἀνεῖλε. Ταῦτα δὲ πάντα οὐχ ἁπλῶς ἐγίνετο· ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ ἐμέλλομεν δι' αἵματος καὶ ξύλου σώζεσθαι, διὰ τοῦτο εἶπεν ὁ Θεὸς, ὅτι Χρίσει ἕκαστος τὸ αἷμα εἰς τὰς θύρας. ∆ιὰ τί οὐκ εἶπε, Χρῖσον τὸ αἷμα εἰς τὸν τοῖχον; Ὅτι οὐκ ἤμελλον σώζεσθαι, εἰ μὴ διὰ ξύλου. Ἐξέβαλεν οὖν αὐτοὺς ὁ Μωϋσῆς ἐκ τῆς Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἤνεγκεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν ἔρημον, καὶ λέγουσι τῷ Μωϋσῇ, ∆ιὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι μνήματα ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, ἤνεγκεν ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θανατῶσαι; Οὐ καλῶς ἡμῖν ἦν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, ὅτε ἐτρώγαμεν τοὺς σίκυας καὶ πέπονας καὶ τὰ κρόμμυα καὶ τὰ σκόροδα; Εἶδες ἀγνωμοσύνην; Αὐτοὶ ἔλεγον τῷ Θεῷ, αὐτοὶ ἠξίουν, ὅτι Ἐξάγαγε ἡμᾶς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου· καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ἠχαρίστουν. Εἶδες ἀγνωμοσύνην αὐτῶν; Ἀλλὰ μάθετε τὸ μεῖζον καὶ ἐξαίρετον πρᾶγμα. Τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη ἐποίησαν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· θρὶξ αὐτῶν οὐκ ηὔξησεν, οὔτε ὄνυξ· ἱμάτιον αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐῤῥυπώθη, ὑπόδημα αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπετρίβη· οὐκ ἔκαμον, οὐκ ἔσκαψαν· βόας οὐκ ἔζευξαν, ἄροτρον οὐχ εἵλκυσαν, αὔλακας οὐκ ἀνέτεμον, ἀκάνθας οὐκ ἀνέσπασαν, σπέρματα οὐ
