beautiful and pleasant; for it is a gift of God; but when the future life appears, then this one is rightly despised. Let us not then be ashamed of the revered symbols of our salvation, nor let us reject the great sum of good things, through which we live and exist, giving ourselves over to luxury and debauchery and gluttony, but let us carry about the cross of Christ as a crown, that is, the mortification of the passions. For indeed all our affairs are accomplished through it; whether one must be reborn, the cross is present; whether one is to be nourished by that mystical food, whether to be ordained, or to do anything else whatsoever, everywhere the symbol of the cross is present with us. For this reason also upon houses, and upon walls, and upon windows, and upon foreheads, and upon the mind we inscribe it with great earnestness. For this is a sign of the salvation on our behalf and of our common freedom, and of the clemency of the Master. For this reason it is called a seal, because all the deposits of God, whatever we may receive, with this, as with some royal seal and ring, we seal, and no evil thing dares to approach any longer. If we entrust to someone the leadership of a people, or if we bring them to the dignity of the priesthood, after offering countless prayers, and calling for the grace of the Spirit to come, with this we seal, as if shutting up in a safe treasury the gift that has been given. Thus also is it used in the sacred rites. For the cross of Christ is a sword and a piece of wood, on which Christ, having been slain by the deicidal Jews, destroyed the works of the devil, and cast down the devil himself, having nailed our sins to it. For this reason it is used in the sacred rites, like some royal sword and scourge, tormenting and driving away every demonic approach and satanic assault. For this reason the divine priests, like certain bodyguards, putting forward the royal scourge, through it drive away every opposing and hostile phalanx, bestowing the divine and royal gifts upon those being initiated, and with them honoring Christ the King.

γʹ. Whenever, then, you make the sign of the cross, consider the whole meaning of the cross, and you will extinguish anger and all the other passions. When you make the sign of the cross, fill your forehead with great boldness, your breast, your eyes, and present every member as a sacrifice pleasing to God. For this is your reasonable service. This sign also in the time of our forefathers opened closed doors, this quenched poisonous drugs, this neutralized the power of hemlock, this healed the bites of venomous beasts. For if it opened the gates of Hades, and threw open the vaults of heaven, and renewed the entrance to paradise, and cut the sinews of the devil, what wonder is it if it overcomes poisonous drugs? Inscribe this, then, on your mind, and embrace the salvation of our souls. For this cross saved the world, drove out error, brought back the truth, made the earth heaven, made men angels. Because of this, demons are no longer fearful, but contemptible, nor is death death, but sleep and a waking. Because of this, the passions of the flesh that war against those who fast, 52.839 wither away. If, then, one of the Jews should say to you: Do you worship the Crucified One? say with a cheerful and loud voice, and with a joyous countenance: Yes, I both worship Him, and I will not cease to worship Him; and if he laughs, weep because he is mad, and does not understand what he is saying; and give thanks to the Master Christ, because He has bestowed on us such benefits, which no one can learn without revelation from above. For this reason he also laughs, because the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit. But what does the frenzied and ungrateful and disobedient Jew say? If then Christ is God, as you say, and Son of God, and has come for the salvation of men, why by such a shameful death
