he was raised high. Therefore, having left all the earth, he crossed the air poured out in between, he passed by the arrangements of the stars, he passed the hosts of angels, the choirs of archangels, and all the noetic powers, the orders of Cherubim and Seraphim, and left behind all things that were brought forth from non-being, and he surpassed all the heavens, and passed by all that was not. He approached the boundaries of the unattainable, and there was no one hindering or obstructing his ascent. For everyone who is spotless in body, pure in heart, guileless in soul, and humble in spirit, is neither obstructed by the aerial spirits, nor hindered by the heavenly powers from ascending to the Jerusalem above, where all the blessed are gathered, just as this blessed apostle, John, the lesser 59.612, and greater than the great holy John.

He passed, therefore, through all things, and no one opposed him. For angels, seeing a man from earth more glorious than angels, having nothing to say, were silent; and the choirs of angels did not dare to hold back another angel from earth, bright in virginity, full of holiness, pure in heart, filled with sweet fragrance. The gates of heaven, seeing again a strange and glorified countenance, gleaming with divine rays beyond the sun, and supposing him to be the one whom Jesus loved, who reclined on his breast in great purity, from which such glory was poured around him, eagerly opened and granted him entrance. Then he drew near, leaving the untrodden places; he arrived at the abyss above. What then shall we say to these things? True is the divine voice speaking through the prophet, But I will glorify those who glorify me; as also the God-father David prophesied concerning this, that The mighty ones of God of the earth have been greatly exalted; and again, In his saints that are in his earth, the Lord has made wonderful all his desires in them. For what is a greater wonder than this, for a man of dust to arrive at such a height? With great boldness, and as many things as are possible to be seen, he saw, and when he wanted to strive for the things beyond, Whom no man has seen, nor can see, as Paul the apostle writes; as John himself also says similar things, that No one has ever seen God. What then shall we say to these things? That Paul wrote well, saying, Whom no man has seen, nor can see. For here are not things according to men, nor things according to nature, but things above nature; not of bondage, but of adoption and friendship (For you are my friends, I will no longer call you slaves); not unclean things, but pure and spoken things, as the divine voice says to them, that You are clean; and the pure in heart shall see God.

John, therefore, bearing these greatest and divine gifts, and having boldly embarked upon the high things, arrived at the boundless ocean, and with the undefiled eyes of his heart having beheld in the bosom of the beginningless Father the co-beginningless Word, who before all ages was ineffably begotten of the Father, and no longer being able to contain that unspeakable joy within himself, his holy and seraphic mouth, and with a loud voice he cried out, saying, In the beginning was the Word. Behold for me the understanding of a fisherman, consider the wisdom of an unlettered man. Have you seen for me the inexpressible height of a teacher, sitting in Ephesus, and beholding the things above the heavens? In the spirit he journeyed to the abyss above, and having fished for theology from the paternal bosom, he wrote below in the body: In the beginning was the Word. Hear, O faithful, and be strengthened, In the beginning was the Word; hear, you contentious babblers, and be ashamed, In the beginning was the Word. No longer be bold, you blasphemers, no longer make war against the Church, you antichrists; no longer transgress the law, no longer lift up a horn, Do not lift up your horn on high, and do not speak injustice against God, saying, that There was a time when he was not, and before

Καταλείψας οὖν πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, διεπέρασε τὸν ἐν μέσῳ κεχυμένον ἀέρα, παρέδραμε τὰς τῶν ἀστέρων διακοσμήσεις, παρῆλθε τὰς στρατιὰς τῶν ἀγγέλων, τὰς τῶν ἀρχαγγέλων χοροστασίας, καὶ πάσας τὰς νοερὰς δυνάμεις, Χερουβὶμ καὶ Σεραφὶμ τάγματα, καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐξ οὐκ ὄντων παρήχθη, κατέλιπε, καὶ ὑπερέβη πάντας τοὺς οὐρανοὺς, καὶ ὅσα οὐκ ἦν παρέδραμε. Προσήγγισε τοὺς ὅρους τῶν ἀνεφίκτων, καὶ οὐδεὶς ὁ κωλύων ἢ ἐμποδίζων τὴν τούτου ἄνοδον. Πᾶς γὰρ ἄσπιλος τῷ σώματι, καθαρὸς δὲ τῇ καρδίᾳ, καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν ἄκακος, καὶ ταπεινὸς τῷ πνεύματι, οὔτε ὑπὸ τῶν ἀερικῶν πνευμάτων ἐμποδίζεται, οὔτε ὑπὸ τῶν οὐρανίων δυνάμεων κωλύεται ἀνελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ἄνω Ἱερουσαλὴμ, ἔνθα πάντες οἱ μακάριοι συνάγονται, ὥσπερ οὗτος ὁ μακάριος ἀπόστολος ὁ μικρό 59.612 τερος Ἰωάννης, καὶ μείζων τοῦ μεγάλου ἁγίου Ἰωάννου.

∆ιὰ πάντων οὖν παρῆλθε, καὶ οὐδεὶς ὁ ἀντιβαίνων. Ἄγγελοι γὰρ ὁρῶντες ἀπὸ γῆς ἄνθρωπον ἀγγέλων ἐνδοξότερον, μηδὲν ἔχοντες εἰπεῖν, ἐσιώπων· οἱ τῶν ἀγγέλων δὲ χοροὶ ἄλλον ἀπὸ γῆς ἄγγελον λαμπρὸν τῇ παρθενίᾳ, πλήρη ἁγιασμοῦ, καθαρὸν τῇ καρδίᾳ, ἐμπεπλησμένον εὐωδίας κατασχεῖν οὐκ ἐτόλμησαν. Αἱ πύλαι τῶν οὐρανῶν πάλιν ἰδοῦσαι ξένον πρόσωπον δεδοξασμένον, ὑπὲρ τὸν ἥλιον θείας ἀκτῖνας ἀποστίλβοντα, καὶ ὑπονοοῦσαι τοῦτον εἶναι, ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς, τὸν ἐν τῷ στήθει αὐτοῦ ἐν πολλῇ καθαρόθητι ἀναπεσόντα, ὅθεν καὶ ἡ τοιαύτη αὐτῷ δόξα περικέχυται, σπουδαίως ἀνεῳχθεῖσαι τὴν εἴσοδον παρεχώρουν. Εἶτα ἐπλησίασε λείπων τὰ ἀνεπίβατα· ἔφθασεν εἰς τὸν ἄνω βυθόν. Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν πρὸς ταῦτα; Ἀληθὴς ἡ θεία φωνὴ διὰ τοῦ προφήτου λέγουσα, Ἀλλ' ἢ τοὺς δοξάζοντάς με δοξάσω· καθὼς περὶ τούτου καὶ ὁ θεοπάτωρ ∆αυῒδ προεφήτευσεν, ὅτι Τοῦ Θεοῦ οἱ κραταιοὶ τῆς γῆς σφόδρα ἐπήρθησαν· καὶ πάλιν, Τοῖς ἁγίοις τοῖς ἐν τῇ γῇ αὐτοῦ ἐθαυμάστωσεν ὁ Κύριος πάντα τὰ θελήματα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτοῖς. Τί γὰρ μεῖζον τούτου τοῦ θαύματος, εἰς τοσοῦτον ὕψος ἀφικέσθαι ἄνθρωπον χοϊκόν; Ἐν πολλῇ παῤῥησίᾳ, καὶ ὅσα δυνατόν ἐστι θεαθῆναι, ἐθεάσατο, καὶ εἰς τὰ ἐπέκεινα αὐτὸν φιλονεικεῖν βουλόμενον, Ὃν εἶδεν οὐδεὶς ἀνθρώπων, οὐδὲ ἰδεῖν δύναται, καθὼς γράφει Παῦλος ὁ ἀπόστολος· καθὼς καὶ αὐτὸς Ἰωάννης τὰ ὅμοια, ὅτι Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακε πώποτε. Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν πρὸς ταῦτα; Ὅτι Παῦλος μὲν καλῶς ἔγραψε λέγων· Ὃν εἶδεν οὐδεὶς ἀνθρώπων, οὐδὲ ἰδεῖν δύναται. Ἐνταῦθα γὰρ οὐκ ἔστι, τὰ κατὰ ἀνθρώπους, οὔτε τὰ κατὰ φύσιν, ἀλλὰ τὰ ὑπὲρ φύσιν· οὔτε τῆς δουλείας, ἀλλὰ τῆς υἱοθεσίας καὶ φιλίας (Ὑμεῖς γὰρ φίλοι μου ἐστὲ, οὐκέτι καλέσω ὑμᾶς δούλους)· οὔτε μὴ καθαρὰ, ἀλλὰ καθαρὰ καὶ λαλούμενα, καθὼς πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἡ θεία φωνὴ λέγει, ὅτι Ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε· οἱ δὲ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται.

Ταῦτα τοίνυν τὰ μέγιστα καὶ θεῖα χαρίσματα ἐπιφερόμενος ὁ Ἰωάννης, καὶ τεθαῤῥηκὼς ἐπὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ἐπιβὰς, ἔφθασεν εἰς τὸ ἀπέραντον πέλαγος, καὶ τοῖς ἀμιάντοις αὐτοῦ τῆς καρδίας ὀφθαλμοῖς θεασάμενος ἐν τοῖς κόλποις τοῦ ἀνάρχου Πατρὸς τὸν συνάναρχον Λόγον, τὸν πρὸ πάντων αἰώνων ἐκ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἀῤῥήτως γεννηθέντα, καὶ μηκέτι τὴν ἀνεκλάλητον ἐκείνην χαρὰν ἐν ἑαυτῷ κατέχειν ἐνισχύων τὸ ἅγιον καὶ σεραφικὸν αὐτοῦ στόμα, καὶ μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ ἀνέκραξε λέγων· Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος. Βλέπε μοι σύνεσιν ἁλιέως, σκόπησον σοφίαν ἀνδρὸς ἀγραμματίστου. Εἶδές μοι ὕψος διδασκάλου ἀδιήγητον, ἐν Ἐφέσῳ καθεζόμενον, καὶ τὰ ὑπεράνω τῶν οὐρανῶν θεώμενον; Τῷ πνεύματι εἰς τὸν ἄνω βυθὸν ἀπεδήμησε, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ πατρικοῦ κόλπου τὴν θεολογίαν ἁλιεύσας τῷ σώματι κάτω ἔγραφεν· Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος. Ἀκούσατε, οἱ πιστοὶ, καὶ στηρίχθητε, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος· ἀκούσατε, οἱ γλωσσαλγοῦντες ἀντίλογοι, καὶ αἰσχύνθητε, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος. Μηκέτι παῤῥησιάζεσθε βλάσφημοι, μηκέτι πολεμεῖτε τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν ἀντίχριστοι· μηκέτι παρανομεῖτε, μηκέτι ὑψοῦτε κέρας, Μὴ ἐπαίρετε εἰς ὕψος τὸ κέρας ὑμῶν, καὶ μὴ λαλεῖτε κατὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀδικίαν, λέγοντες, ὅτι Ἦν πότε, ὅτε οὐκ ἦν, καὶ πρὶν
