He Himself was doing this, showing, but at the same time, as I said, both fulfilling prophecy and teaching philosophy, and at the same time also comforting His disciples, who were grieving because of His death and showing that He suffers all these things willingly. But admire for me the accuracy of the prophet, how he foretold all things; and David proclaimed some things beforehand, and Zechariah others. Thus let us also do and sing hymns and cast our garments before those who bear Him.

For of what would we be worthy, when some cover the donkey on which He sat, and others spread their garments under its feet, but we, seeing Him naked, are not even commanded to give back, but to spend from what remains, are not even so generous? And they indeed follow before and behind, but we even turn away those who approach, we push them aside, we insult them. Of how great a punishment are these things worthy? Let us not then be impoverished, nor become inhuman and cruel to ourselves, but let us trade in this good merchandise, so that we ourselves, having received it, may depart and leave it to our own sons and obtain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen".

αὐτὸς ἐποίει δεικνύμενος, ἀλλ' ὁμοῦ μέν, ὅπερ εἶπον, καὶ προφητείαν πληρῶν καὶ φιλοσοφίαν παιδεύων, ὁμοῦ δὲ καὶ τοὺς μαθητὰς παραμυθούμενος, λυπουμένους διὰ τὸν θάνατον καὶ δεικνύς, ὅτι πάντα ταῦτα πάσχει ἑκών. Σὺ δέ μοι θαύμασον τοῦ προφήτου τὴν ἀκρίβειαν πῶς πάντα προεῖπε· καὶ τὰ μὲν ὁ ∆αυΐδ, τὰ δὲ ὁ Ζαχαρίας προανεφώνησεν. Οὕτω καὶ ἡμεῖς ποιῶμεν καὶ ὑμνῶμεν καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια προώμεθα τοῖς αὐτὸν φέρουσι.

Τίνος γὰρ ἂν εἴημεν ἄξιοι, ὅταν οἱ μὲν τὴν ὄνον περιβάλλωσιν ἣν ἐκάθητο, οἱ δὲ τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτῆς ὑποστρωννύωσι τὰ ἱμάτια, ἡμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν γυμνὸν ὁρῶντες οὐδὲ ἀποδοῦναι κελευόμενοι, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ τῶν μενόντων δαπανᾶν μηδὲ οὕτως ὦμεν φιλότιμοι; Κἀκεῖνοι μὲν παρακολουθοῦσιν ἔμπροσθεν καὶ ὄπισθεν, ἡμεῖς δὲ καὶ προσιόντας παραπεμπόμεθα, διακρουόμεθα, ὑβρίζομεν. Πόσης ταῦτα κολάσεως ἄξια; μὴ δὴ πτωχεύωμεν, μηδὲ ἀπάνθρωποι καὶ ὠμοὶ περὶ ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς γινώμεθα, ἀλλ' ἐμπορευσώμεθα τὴν καλὴν ταύτην πραγματείαν, ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ λαβόντες αὐτὴν ἀπέλθωμεν καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς τοῖς ἑαυτῶν καταλείψωμεν καὶ τῶν μελλόντων ἐπιτύχωμεν ἀγαθῶν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν".
