the tracing back of the divine and pious Luke to Seth and to Adam and to God. And Noah, when he was 500 years old, begot three sons, Shem, Ham, Japheth. And 100 years after his sons were born he entered into the ark, being 600 years old, and thus the flood happens. And in the 601st year of his life he went out from the ark, and after the flood he lived 350 years, and he died having lived a total of 950 years. But when the flood had ceased, the fear indeed was giving way, but the things of his despondency were intensely stretched, and he was suffering the prophetic thing, which Amos says concerning the day of the Lord, "as if a man should flee from the face of a lion and a bear meet him; or went into his house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him," so it was happening then. For having emerged from the ark and been freed from that fetid and confined prison, another storm, no less than the former, succeeded, as he contemplated the despair and destruction of the race.

And Shem, two years after the flood, being 102 years old, begot Arphaxad, and after this he lived 500 years, and died having lived a total of 602 years. And Arphaxad, being 135 years old, begot Cainan, and after this he lived 403 years, and died having lived a total of 538 years. And Cainan, being 109 years old, begot Sala, and after this he lived 330 years, and died having lived a total of 367 years. And his father educated Sala in letters as he grew up; and once Sala, having gone to look for a colony, came to the land of the Chaldeans and encountered writings engraved on certain stones; and these were the tradition of the Watchers; and Sala, having written these things down, both sinned himself in them and taught the same absurdity to others. And Sala, being 130 years old, begot Eber, and after this he lived 403 years, and died having lived a total of 533 years. And Eber, being 134 years old, begot Joktan and Peleg. And in the time of Eber, the people conceived of constructing a tower reaching to heaven for the avoidance of the flood, as if God were plotting against them; for they all had one language. And Nimrod the giant, son of Cush the Ethiopian, commanded and supplied animals by hunting for food. And Eber, the son of Sala, was entrusted to press on with the building of the tower and of Babylon, which is confusion. And when all rushed to the building of the tower and the city, they had 72 leaders, but Eber alone did not consent to their irrational work; wherefore also the languages of all were confused, those who had conspired being divided into 72 languages according to the number of their leaders; God did not deprive Eber alone of the ancient language. Whence those who remained with the former language named it Hebrew according to the name of him who kept it, Eber, for the race of the Hebrews, who are called Hebrews both patronymically and eponymously. Wherefore also those from Adam used the Hebrew language, and those descended from Abraham and Noah and the second Adam, I mean Christ, clearly used the Hebrew language according to the first Adam of all, as in ephphatha and talitha koum and lama sabachthani and similar things. And indeed, in addition to these things, the names of the ancients are also clear proof that this was the language before the confusion, and by this the thing sought is interpreted, for which it is not possible to resolve the meaning in any other language, such as the names of Adam and the rest are not interpreted through any other, except through Hebrew alone. For they also call this language Syriac, as the very learned Origen thus testifies, interpreting from the Syriac book and thereafter calling the dialect of the Hebrews Syriac, since the ancients used to call Judea Syria, and the Palestinians Syrians. The tower therefore was built in the time of Eber in years
