trumpeting this resurrection and saying thus: Now I will arise, says the Lord, now I will be glorified, now I will be exalted. Now you will be afraid. Vain is the strength of your father. And who is the father of the Jews? The devil. And who is a witness to this? The Lord himself, saying to them in person that You are of the devil, and your father is Satan. Vain is the strength of your father, and true is the word; for he set up a tree of a curse, I build a cross of blessing; he hewed out a tomb, I fashion it into an altar; he left me to the Jews for death, I quickly choke him. Truly vain is the strength of their father, the devil; for even today, behold how many children he has been deprived of, I mean the newly-illumined who are present; for their brightness is <his darkness>, their feasting his displeasure; <these are in the church,> he is in the wilderness; these are with angels, he is with swine; from where he fell, these have been raised up and rooted there; those once slaves are now free, and he who was once an archangel is now the devil; those once enemies are now friends, and he who was once a friend is now condemned; those once poor are now rich, and he who was once rich is now a wearer of rags; those once inglorious are now glorious, and he who was once glorious is now in iron fetters; those once captives are now redeemed, and he who once took captives now holds no one. And that the newly-illumined were rescued as if from captivity by the oversight of Christ the King, hear the Holy Spirit speaking through the prophet David concerning these newly-illumined from many years ago: Let the redeemed of the Lord say, whom he redeemed from the hand of enemies, and gathered them from the lands, from the east and from the west and from the north and from the sea. The things said are true; for from every race and every tribe and country the dragnet of the font has caught these rational fish through the fishermen apostles. For such is the art of Christ's fishermen; they do not set up nets but catch alive by faith. Let the redeemed of the Lord say, from the hand of the enemy, the devil who sows tares, who sowed and did not reap; for the desert has become a paradise, no longer putting forth the nettles of enemies, but blooming with the newly-illumined lilies. For Isaiah, seeing these many years before, said: Let the desert of the Jordan rejoice and blossom as a lily. And why are the newly-illumined called lilies? On account of the whiteness of their garments on the outside, and the golden gleam of faith on the inside. Let the redeemed of the Lord say. What should they say? Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. The snare is broken and we are delivered. Let the redeemed of the Lord say: I have put off my tunic, how shall I put it on? Let my soul rejoice in the Lord; for he has clothed me with the garment of salvation and has put on me the tunic of gladness. What garment? The clothing of faith. And a tunic of gladness, which one? As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ, that is, the confession of the undivided Trinity. Let the redeemed of the Lord say. Let them say and not be silent, let them not consign the good deed to oblivion. Let the redeemed of the Lord say: One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God who is over all and through all and in all. Let them not say one thing down in the font and babble other things up above. As you were taught, O newly-illumined one, so worship; as you were baptized, so glorify; as you were born again, believe and grow; what was entrusted to you, guard; what you have put on, do not tear; what you have acquired, <not> sell; you were born again as an eagle, seek the things that are above; you have come out of Sodom, do not turn back, lest you become a pillar of salt like Lot's wife; you were called a child, do not imitate Absalom; you became a disciple, do not encounter Judas; you have entered the ark, to the raven
