For just as an image falls short of the truth, so much a shadow falls short of an image; for the image, even if it does not possess the truth itself, is nevertheless a clear imitation of the 467 truth, preserving its form through colors, the proportion of its members, and the color of the subject; but the shadow is a faint phantom of the image, showing none of these things which the image reveals. And I think that Gregory, among the saints, was led by these apostolic sayings to say the things set forth above. And many other fathers said similar things to Gregory. hebr 10,4 For not only, he says, were the sacrifices offered for subsequent sins, but rather for all sins, as if they had not been forgiven by the sacrifices already made. hebr 10,21 He calls the faithful the house of God, according to the verse, 'I will dwell in them and walk among them.' hebr 10,26 Note that he did not say 'of those who have sinned,' but used the continuous tense, wishing to show persisting in sin until the end; for from this it is especially clear that he does not do away with repentance. hebr 11,4 Or through faith. Sufficient, therefore, he says, is he also to reward you for the afflictions on his account; for not only was he crucified, but he also sits at the right hand of God, the right hand and the throne indicating equality of honor. hebr 12,9 For they are not able to discipline us completely, so as to make us perfect, but God, by always disciplining, makes us perfect; for either the death of the father, or the growth of the child stops the discipline. hebr 12,17 Some interpret it thus: although with tears he sought the blessing, that is also, he found no place for repentance in the meantime. hebr 12,23 And by 'firstborn' he means the saints, those deemed worthy of the exceptional adoption above the rest of the faithful, from the analogy of the firstborn among us who have a certain precedence from their birthright. hebr 12,27 The 'yet once more' signifies that after the second time, another 'once more' is added. For first the world was shaken at the giving of the law on Sinai; for 'the earth was shaken,' David says. Again at the advent in the flesh the world was shaken; for 'all Jerusalem was shaken,' and 'the man-made things of Egypt will be shaken.' And by 'shaking' he means the renowned character of the preaching, by which people were shaken from their old standing in error and were transformed. Thus Cyril. But the 'yet once more,' he says, refers to his second coming with glory, when he will remake and alter creation; for then creation 469 will be shaken most of all with a real shaking and crash, or the transformation from evil to good of the people living at that time. Pay attention also to the note of the blessed Cyril on Haggai. hebr 12,29 Or he wants them to be frightened into not being ungrateful nor grumbling at their afflictions, lest, he says, you encounter God being angry and punishing; or to comfort, as if he were saying: we will give thanks in our afflictions, for we have a master who is able to consume our adversaries.
